!!~Tutorial on how to get a TON of hearts and plays~!

Archive: 49 posts

*turns around*

Oh, Hi! Didn't see you come in. How about you have a seat right there.

So... I hear that you want lots of hearts, and you want the levels that you poured your blood, sweat and tears into to get more than 11 plays.

Yes? That's you? Fantastic. I'm going to tell you how to do that.

Whaa? Meteor, I highly doubt that you know the perfect recipe for lots of <3's. Nobody does. YOU A LIE!1

Hey now, settle down there, kid.

All you need to know to get lots of hearts and plays is PCS.

Err.. What's PCS...

P lay
C reate
S hare.

But Meteor...

HUSH! Don't even try to tell me that this method and combination of words are not mine, because they are! I take 100% credit for PCS! No but seriously, I've never seen Play, Create and Share used anywhere before. Ever.

But..

SILENCE!

Now, let me break this down for you:

PLAY:

So guess what? You can earn hearts just by playing the game and being a good little BIG community member!

IS NOT POSSIBLE

Ah, but I assure you my friend.. it is quite possible.

Take these steps:

-Find a fairly popular level, and play it. Take note of things you really liked in it, and things that you think the creator can improve upon. Make sure to also take note of bugs.

-When you finish the level, type up a well thought-up review. Be honest, and report the things that I just mentioned above.
If you liked the level, give it a 'yay', and if you didn't like it, give it a 'boo'. HOWEVER, If you're going to boo a level, make sure you say why in your comments.

Oh, so my reviews that say 'lol this level reminds me of the pimple I have on my--'

NO! Don't do that. If you're going to goof off and be a weirdie when you review, then people are going to boo your comments/reviews and not even give you a second thought.

So.. uh.. what makes you think they won't do the same if I leave a decent review, oh great Meteor?

Well, maybe some people don't, but personally, if I see a well-thought out review, I'm saying to myself "Hey, this person is pretty decent! I should check out his levels!".

If you really poured your blood, sweat and tears into a level, the person will notice it, and it will spread like that rash I have on--

How does it spread?

Well, my lovely student, once your little fanclub plays your level and likes it, it goes into his 'recent activity'. Now all of his friends from the playground and that girl he likes that sits on the swings will all see that he liked the level, and will most likely check it out!

Gee Wiz! That sure is neat-o!

Indeed it is, but if you think you'll be getting a million gajillion hearts this way, then sadly you're wrong.

CREATE:

-Whilst you jump, grab, grapple and emit your way through community levels, take note of gameplay that you really enjoy, and you think fits well with other bits of gameplay. Maybe you can sketch it out on paper while you go. For instance:

"Ah, a banana that shoots mini bananas! I love it! *writes it down for later use*"

You might find it useful to keep an "ideas" folder/binder/notebook. I have one, and it certainly helps.

Once you're happy with your creations, and it's just how you envisioned it, publish it. Publishing levels is a sure-fire way to get a SACKLOAD of <3's.

Psh. That's BOGUS. I have 15 levels published, and I only have 5 hearts!

Oh? Let's take a look at your levels.

Hmm.. It seems that you just published the same level, "H4H COPY FREE TROPHIES PINS COSTUMES GLITCH FREE DLC I PROMISE ITS NOT A SCAM" 15 times. Did you REALLY pour your heart into each and every one of these levels?

Well..

Yeah. Didn't think so.

Now, here's something else that you're going to want to keep in mind: Criticism is good.

If someone says that your level sucks banana popsicles because of the lighting, then change the lighting. Going to their profile and boo'ing all of their levels and calling them a big fat meanie head isn't going to make you look like a very mature person, or a decent creator.

Here's something I like to do. Publish your level and lock it. Take your friends in, and pretend that it's someone else's level. Ask what their honest opinions are.

SHARE:

This part is pretty simple.

If you have something cool... Share it!

If you've made a machine that emit monkeys that eat an nuclear banana and then gain the ability the spew lazers from its tail, then... share it!

I'm not saying to give everyone everything from your levels, but if you've made some cool logic that would help people out, then put it in a level and share it.

People will DEFINITELY appreciate it, and give you love (<3) in return.

So, you got that?

Um.. I think..

Good. Now, run along. Go, have fun, be creative. Don't slap too much or taste the strange leaves on the playground.

So you found my level (http://lbp.me/v/ye0fvq) or you watched my video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zelZjBdb2So). Then you go and make your own level (http://lbp.me/v/ykc0bf) and call it how to make objects rotate in 3D because of the camera glitch and you give no credit to me at all.

So why isn't that in your post?

Steal other peoples levels/glitches and take credit for them.

I wasn't getting any plays on my level until one night I sacrificed a chicken. When I woke up...I was getting a ton of plays. Not sure if there's any correlation there, but if you ever get desperate.... 2011-03-31 06:23:00

I'd like to hear more about this..

I mean, there's a difference between being inspired, with proper credit due, and plain out stealing other's ideas without crediting, dude...

I rarely play other peoples levels. I've never recycled someone elses ideas or been influenced by their creations. I never share anything I've made with anybody. If someone talks smack on my comments page then I will take revenge, which has led to many embittered flame wars and earned me my fair share of enemies. I have never even promoted my LBP2 levels anywhere. I don't do any of the things you suggested, and yet I still get more than enough hearts and plays to satisfy me as a creator.

Sometimes just being awesome gets you a long way

Heck, it's not even a level. I got 1.6k plays on it. Surely someone who is a lot more popular than me as a creator shouldn't care about a measly 1,600 plays, right?

more intersting is that 1.6k is considered not much...checks profile...well I am at 28....yeah 28, not 28k. Checking further the most plays I have is at around 282...and that has been published for years. Honestly I just felldepressed at that. I blame the media, with all their focus on "good" levels, the bad ones get passed over. 2011-03-31 08:45:00

Well that could be trying to get out on a technicality...but since LBP1 is linked to LBP2, I would think that having that marked is still advertising...and since you have that you don't have to worry about advertising now.

This is how i get plays: Publish a new level, Every 5 mins edit it (put random dark matter out of sight), Return to pod and save it, then republish it.
If you keep doing this you'll get plays.. Might take awhile though. I always get 80-100 plays on my new levels withing a day or too. Hope this helps anyone who's desperate for plays..

No technicality. I stated that I have never promoted my LBP2 levels anywhere, which is absolutely true. To suggest otherwise would be like saying that Peter Jackson promoted District 9 by leaving a King Kong poster hanging around on a billboard somewhere. My LBP1 levels are all locked down in LBP2 and I have only 2 levels published in LBP2, neither of which I posted in the showcase thread. I published them both on the quiet because (A) I want to avoid the kind of negative attention that Space Assassins attracted, and (B) because I fear censorship. The fact that Stiff Pistons still gathered almost 500 plays despite me keeping it hush hush has made me decide to keep my next level Space Assassins 2 under lock and key, only to be played by my friends. Now I'm tempted to also lock down Stiff Pistons before it gets moderated, but in a perverse kind of way it's amusing me to see how people react to it. Also, my SA2 sig down there is not for the benefit of the community because most of you will never get to play it. It's simply there to reassure a small handful of friends who are probably wondering when the hell I'm actually gonna finish the project they've been playtesting for me, that I will finally deliver the goods one day. Once it's done, Ungreth is also done as a creator. (I plan to make one last level for my daughter, but that wont even get published to the servers).

My point is, you don't have to follow the advice in this thread to get your level played. Sometimes it just happens, even in spite of a creator's best efforts to fly under the radar.

No, you played my level 1 month ago (http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb80/geoman_20/LBM.png?t=1301591606) & I don't care about the plays I care about people thinking you found my glitch.

You really care so much that you would search him on LBP.me, go all the way down his page to find his month old activity, take a print screen of it, upload it to photobucket, and post it here? I think you're taking this way too seriously, to the point where its youre obsessing. The guy makes a guide about how to help desperate players, and you come in here trolling and accusing him of stealing? This is why our community is falling apart.

And you're accusing him of stealing, well, how do we know you didnt steal it yourself? How do we know you discovered it without help? You cant make a level about a glitch and publish it and expect people to not make levels about it themselves (http://lbp.me/search?q=3d+layer+glitch)

Yea because going through his history took me two minuets, thats obsession...& if you look through all the levels "how to twist" or how to make objects 3d" mine will be the 1st published thats how you know I didn't steal it.

It just got me mad that he said he would take it down if I gave him scuba, & no I didn't give him scuba. & i'm done in this thread. 8^)

Well, yes. Take out a timer, or stopwatch, and clock two minutes. Its a pretty long time. Thats how much time you spent proving you are a troll.

& if you look through all the levels "how to twist" or how to make objects 3d" mine will be the 1st published thats how you know I didn't steal it.
Perhaps you have me there(I only found two, actually; I couldnt even find yours :/ you have too many random levels, and none of them looked like what I was looking for), however, this really isnt the point Im making. Plus, "how to make objects 3D" applies to way more things, so that is very redundant.

It just got me mad that he said he would take it down if I gave him scuba
Well if you never did, which you never said you did, I find it quite obvious why he didnt delete it yet.

Funny thing is, this glitch is actually from BETA.
So its not really "your" glitch, so you accusing him of stealing "your" glitch only makes you guilkty and accusable of stealing the other guy's glitch and claiming it as your own.

So...yeah, you may have recreated it again, but you're not doing anything differently than lbmeteor here, so you should really tone it down, m8.

How about, if you don't want it to be copied, don't share it. Sure, credit would be nice, but when you share something, you know the risks. Keep that in mind, my fellow Sackpeople.

Thank you! I'll use these methods. Great job! (:

okay, ive done all of those things before, but have only one creator heart, from someone who probably doesn't even play lbp anymore, one play on my only level, and one like on that level, (and the reason i only have one level is because my other ones have failed.) ive advertised my levels, and ive been part of the lbp community since the near start of lbp1..... what exactly am i doing wrong? dont read this and think im a troll, id rather you read this and thought i was desperate.......2011-04-01 13:17:00

I thought that only worked in LBP1 up until the server update?

Anyway, I feel you reach the point where you realise that you don't actually care about hearts or plays after a while.I just want to make good levels that I know the few who do play it will enjoy. The play count on my levels has never hit above 600, and that's only on one which has been out for around a year and a half. I'm still happy though, because I know it was fun to make and enjoyable to play (or it was, until LBP2 broke it).

Also, there are a couple of things I disagree with, mainly the Share. I feel that giving prizes becomes a nuisance and (excluding the Logic Pack in LBP1), I don't think I have ever used a prize given to me in a community level in one of my own. I don't think it matters as much. Don't want to get into an argument, just saying as all

So ok, ya, enough with the bickering about who owns what glitch and who gets credit. If you don't have anything to add regarding the topic don't post.

We appreciate your help we really do but the truth is there is no method. People get lucky. When people make better levels people will "subscribe" to your LBP page initiating more plays but there is no method relly. Believe me I have tried your method the re-publishing method and even once when I was a noob I copied a very popular level which got about 4 plays and 2 hearts one of which was mine. Dont worry though I deleted the level about a week later realising it was wrong.2011-04-04 20:10:00

Mm has patched this.
So doing so will not get your level on the cool pages. also your first published is what the game reads for the recently published. no go there either.

As for the typical credit war, here are my steps for overcoming it.

?Calculate the time you spent fighting over credit for an old glitch.
?Now input the amount of time most of the community spent not paying much atttention to it.
?Add it up. The sum should be the same.
?Sacrifice a chicken. Now apologize to yourselves.
It makes much more sense if you don't think about it. As for the guy who made the chicken remark, congratulations. You have made it to my LolDatabase. My people will be contacting yours shortly.

P.S. Again, I was off topic. This guide was incredibly original. I have never heard of PCS. Probably because I'm a Mac. (Wait, that's not what this is about?)

Nice idea, if everybody played by these rules, the communtiy would be a better place. Sadly no amount of behavior will get me more plays. I think theres a curse on me. I have read countless tutorials on making levels, and most mention "being creative" or "don't do something that's already been done"

Hmmm....with over 1 million (or is it 2?) levels out there, there is no possible way I will play them all to be certain I am doing something original.
I make levels that I feel my 9 yr old daughter would like, and am making one now with her help.
If no one likes them, that's sad, but my life won't end there.
With each creation, I feel improvement.
Perhaps I will never be as great as the majority of creators, but I am having fun.
One thing for sure, I'm not making levels with the main goal of getting a trophy, and
another certainty, my levels are tested well, so that there is little chance of being stuck
and having no way out...

While these tutorials and hints are entertaining to read, my main rule is Have Fun

Your level got 2k plays?
Dang!
Congratulations!
How does someone steal a level anyway?
If it is published as not copyable, that is...

The repubbing trick can work, you just have to have the tenacity of colon cancer to stay on top of the new pages. I decided after Temple of Bubbles part 2 got over 100 hearts I wouldn't really care about that stuff anymore, as it was genuinely a lot of work to republish constantly enough to stay on top of "kill justin beiber" and "50 free costumss! h4h!!!" levels that flood all the pages right now....I still wish there was a different system, but alas...2011-04-21 17:00:00

You should also add in the title 'Without the cheapness of shark, bomb, or nazi zombie survivals'.2011-04-21 17:36:00

I like your theory but you have to think what the community want. Alot (not all) but alot are either young or into levels called 'FREE HACKED CLOTHES NO JOKE' so i proved my theory to be correct that you have to publish a level that children wouldl like. I created that awful level 'the waffle song level' it got about 30k plays for a sackbot dancing. I did it to prove the community is really out of balance. So if you create a level called 'Narwhales song level' you'll get loads of plays becuase the community arn't all into cool levels and detail.

Well, most of what I do is to satisfy my 9 yr old
So judging by your theory, I'm headed in the right direction
My next level to be published as soon as PSN is up again,
is being coproduced by my 9 yr old
(Which means it should probably look a heck of a lot better than my previous ones)

Mind if I steal your line/idea about Narwhales?

The op was very funny

My experience, th e most plays I had was on a movie level Happy St Patricks Day with about 16k views (It did get moderated but that's not relavent to this discussion)
It was a throwaway movie myself and a friend (I3linder) did on St Patricks Day, we made it and published it in a day, the fact that it was topical (and had 'funny film' in the title) I think made it 'successful' in terms of plays.

I have done FAR better movies that saw no-where near that amount of activity.

However, before you start chasing the holy grail of massive plays, be sure you know what you're letting yourself in for... friends requests, invites to join literally every two minutes. You get to a point where you can hardly find messages from existing friends amongst all the spam. You'll also open yourself up to a lot of baiters & haters, people who produce absolutelly nothing dropping by to inform you how much you suck.

Am just saying this so anyone seeking plays is aware it's not all wine & roses

My last movie attracted about 4k views, most of the people who watched it were very kind in their comments, some constructive critiques, but still, even with that number of views there were a fair few who were just totally destructive, for whatever reason makes sense to them. (for the nice people, thanx a lot, it really does help me try and improve)

Once you hit just ONE big player, ALL of your existing levels will attract a lot more players, it may seem like an uphil struggle sometimes but it CAN be done.

My advice to anyone who seriously wants plays, would be make something topical (PSN being down for example) get as many friends as you can to play it and rate it as soon as they can, publicise it as much as you can, twitter it, do all the PCS stuff advised in te first post, and one, day, it will hopefully be you.

And then you'll think nooooooo I wish I had some peace!!!

Just to clarify the misunderstanding, that wasn't sarcasm, and the gif was intended as a sort of "patriotic applause".

It seems like I can't get noticed anywhere. On lbp, my most successful level has only around 100 plays, and it's not even my best work. And of the few hearts I have, only one is from someone who isn't on my friends list. I can't even get noticed on this forum. I put up a post asking for help on getting levels noticed and it got 0 replies and is now buried. Whoop de doo2011-05-09 01:36:00
