Really strange bug.

Archive: 7 posts

Find and play my level "Physics Bug Demonstration," located at the north pole. I've discovered an odd bug when using emitters that I'm at a loss to explain. If anyone can figure out why this is happening and how to avoid it, I would really appreciate it! The level I'm working on is severely impeded by this bug.

I can find it on the fourth page when searching for 'bug'. The icon is solid red.

I've tried this level, and the bug can only be explained as an odd "magnetization" of the wheel you use when playing. At the start, run left and push the button, dropping an orange wheel. Continue on (you will need to ditch the wheel and swing on hanging sponge) and you will find another spawn point for a new wheel. Use that one, and continue. You will notice that at one point, Sackboy will be "sucked in" to the wheel. You really have to play and see for yourself. I was stumped; if you guys have any idea on how to fix this, speak up.2008-11-30 06:02:00

So do you ride inside of the wheel?

If so, MM's physics engine, though incredible, has a few problems, one of which being centrifugul force.

When a certain amount of newtons are put on your sack dude and accelerates too much, he actually phases through matter, and slows down and rephases back in.

It takes a huge amount of newtons to do this though, and it seems MM's physics engine overcalculates the power of centrafugul force (energy from center of a circle motion outwards) and totally overshoots it.

The only other force in the game that can exert this energy on your sackdude are the common jump buttons, parts of ground that launch you upwards. If they move too fast they phases past your sack person.

This is actually the cause of the perma death glitch, as the force of the wheel of doom machine launches your sack person across the level and through the wall of the edge pof the level!

Thus, when you respawn, you actually respawn inside the wall, and instantly die again.

You die roughly 20-50 times per second, depending on the current complexity of the level, and use up billions of lvies in udner a minute.

Thus putting your current life value at like negative a billion, which does go up everytime you respawn, but since you respawn once per 2-3 seconds, you need to spend an entire minute respawning for every 1 second you were locked in perma death state...

Thus, what I'm guessing, is your spinning on the wheel and the centrifugal force ends up going overboard again, and then when you let go it messes up and goes negative and kills your or sucks you in.

Cartman: the posted map is actually a much simplified version that is only the bug, not the full map in progress.

Lionhart: It can't be just that sackboy is moving in an odd way, because one of the wheels works and the other doesn't--but they are identical objects.

The left one seems to be working fine... the right one appears to be broken..2008-12-03 15:34:00

I've noticed that it's actually not consistent. It was the left one that was broken until I published it... then it switched! It really adds to the oddness of the bug.

I don't know much more about the bug yet, but I did find a workaround. It seems that this only occurs when you have multiple emitters that emit the same kind of object. So, I've made my level work by emitting slightly different kinds of objects (mostly they just have different stickers on them). This seems to work in all my tests so far.
