Segmenting...

Archive: 7 posts

Hey all!

I apologize in advance if there is a REAL easy way of doing this that I'm missing but here goes:

How does one quickly (and neatly) divide their materials into segments?
I've seen many creators doing this and their lines are always perfect like there is some special tool for the purpose.

What I want to do is instead of laying down just one big continuous block of material, I'd like to divide it up into chunks and have the divisions clean and perfect.

Thanks in advance!

There is; the grid. Hit Start and set the grid size to something other than none, then you can lay down material that's perfectly aligned to grid squares.

If you don't want your lines to be perfectly vertical or horizontal, the other big handy tool is the corner edit tool. Most shapes I build are started from squares, then I use the corner edit tool to shape them as I please (rather than smearing a shape, like a circle).

When I have two adjacent materials that I want to make flush with a perfect seam, I use the corner tool to match up the corners. This can be somewhat fallible if you are seeking absolute perfection because it's up to you to match the corners perfectly. Then again, you can always turn on the grid, and use that for your corner editing. I do this a lot too.

Alternatively you can do the cut-and-paste method, where you take your second chunk of material and cut that out of your first, then immediately place the new one. That one does giveperfect seams because you're essentially embedding the second shape into the first without having the two shapes merge (when dealing with the same material).

Another cool feature that's new to LBP2 is the angle snap which allows you to rotate objects by a set number of degrees which used to only be possible using sprung bolts and stuff. Really handy for making sure everything lines up how you want it to.2011-03-31 00:48:00
