Jak & Daxter Recreated In Lbp2

Archive: 27 posts

Hey guys just wanting to know that I'm in the works of recreating the classic ps2 Naughty Dog game. I've been slow going but the 1st level is looking great so far. Just getting some of the logic worked out for the controllable Jak sackbot and the various eco powerups that you can collect throughout the levels. At the moment I think I can fit into 4 levels the entire game, although I'm hoping, so yeah... Basically I have the game split into 4 levels which sorta correlates to the 4 main chapters that happen in the game. (Note: Not really chapters, but in the original game, you had 4 main turning points in the game) So the 4 levels are split into these areas:

Level 1: Geyser Rock, Misty Island, Sandover Village, Forbbiden Jungle, Sentinel Beach, and the Fire Canyon
Level 2: Rock Village, Lost Precursor City, Boggy Swamp, Precursor Basin, Mountain Pass
Level 3: Volcanic Crater, Spider Cave, Snowy Mountains, Lava Tube
Level 4: Gol and Maya's Citadel

So I have Jak's double jump and blue eco powerup just about done, I'm going between working on level one and working on the logic. I have a pretty niffty system for the Daxter sackbot to follow you, using a follower and grab system. The various powerups will give Jak a danger tweaker which looks pretty sweet ingame. I orignally had a quirk where the grabbing Daxter sackbot died because of this, now I have fixed it with making both have danger tweakers activated on them. The trick is to have the tweakers activate and deactivate at the same time, otherwise one of the sackbots dies. At the moment I don't have pictures to show, but give me time and I'll post some up. I also got around to Luos_83 and c_mackemy's copyable heath bar tutorial level and did some fiddling with it to get the life system that you get (3 part heart), I think I have it set up right, but some fiddling may be in order.

Note: These are rough work's in progress, more to be added
Note: This is not a group project so no need to ask me if you can help, although I am needing a music savy person, read below for info
-Music: I'm really wanting to have the music from the game recreated and put into my levels, but I'm not a music guy so anyone wanting to help with this would be greatly appreciated. Basically I just want the specific tracks that correlate to the areas you enter, so say you go to Sandover Village, I want that track to play when you get there. So if your interested message me and let me know, if you want to help, I would really like if you could recreate all the area-specific music, although I know that's alot to ask of someone. It's a big undertaking, but I'm striving to make this series as good and as awesome as possible. EDIT: I recently found an awesome dude on youtube who has most of the music uploaded, here's the link to one of the vids click here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tm7TBe0uTU&feature=related), so yeah the Geyser Rock music applies to both areas Geyser Rock and Sandover Village.
Basic List Of Wanted Music
-Geyser Rock
-Sentinel Beach
-Forbidden Jungle
-Forbidden Temple
-Fire Canyon
-Misty Island
-Rock Village
-Boggy Swamp
-Lost Precursor City
-Precursor Basin
-Jak vs. Klaww Confrontation
-Mountain Pass
-Volcanic Crater
-Spider Cave (being made by Ricky-III)
-Snowy Mountain
-Lava Tube
-Gol and Maya's Citadel
-Final Boss Confrontation
Things I"m Getting To
-Create the Zoomer logic
-Create the Flut-Flut logic
-Create the collectable green, yellow, blue, red eco, precursor orbs, power cells, scout flies
-Get some decent enemies made
-Make awesome begininng cut-scene for first level
-Finish the Jak-botdone, may need tweaking though
-Finish making the sackbot characters that appear throughout the game
-Finish the actual levels(well obviously)
-Make a small preview of Geyser Rock area (will actually be the Geyser Rock I use in the finished version)
Other Stuff
-So yes the level will use a Jak sackbot, I have about every attack and feature he had in the original game some fiddling is in order but the Jak-bot is basically done.
-Due to the thermometer contraints, I will be using the emit and destroy method for each of the areas, except the Villages. This will make it alot easier to work on indivdual areas and I'm thinking that if I use the live emmiter feature, I won't have to worry about strategically placing the final version of the specific areas. I'll see if the live emmiter picks up anything that is added to a small area after it's been already placed in the emmiter.
-I will be adding the "You collect all 100 power cells", feature, I'm going for 30 power cells in the first 3 levels and 10 in the last one. When you do get all power cells in a level, I'll put a prize sticker you use at the 100 power cells door. I'm not sure what you will get when you do open the door. I think I'll give the Jak sackbot as a prize and some other things. It'll be a secret until you get there
-I will have these levels go through beta testing before they're released. I'm only working on one at a time and they will be published when they are done individually, not at the same time, don't want to make you guys wait forever for them! Beta code thread for the current level will be right HERE when I get one done.

That's about it for now, anyone wanting to comment or give tips to how this could be a near-close reacreation of the game feel free to post on this thread. Peace!

WHAT!? JAK AND DAXTER!? <3 my lord this is definitely my favorite video game series ever. I'd LOVE to help! One thing I can say iS that I'm not entirely sure 4 levels alone will cut it. Seems quite small for the great open world. Also for the canyon zoomer sections, I could make use of the 3D camera (similar to the overcharged 3D racer level!) and maybe sections such as precursor basin/the fisherman's game should be side levels/minigames? (with the racing and all.) :] Boss levels could be separate and GRANDer for LBP style epicness?2011-03-31 22:15:00

To what Noroibito, I do intend to make the fisherman minigame and some that appear in the precursor basin. As far at the 3d cam for the zoomer sequences, I've yet to tinker with the cam yet. I may or may not use it. I know 4 levels is pushing it, but I'm confident it's moderately possible, reason I put the "4 levels hopefully" in the title 2011-04-01 03:12:00

From what the images show it looks promising. As an idea, if you get this into 4 levels, with the portals in the game that let you travel to each village, you could have those as level links to go to each level perhaps since you plan to have one main village/hub area per level. With tasks that require certain amounts of orbs you could utilise one of them score counter things (I forgot the name) to have them recognised to be unlocked. Although you'd probably have to avoid the player losing points when the Jak-bot dies otherwise if they die too much they might not have enough points to continue the level which would obviously suck.

Will there be the day/night cycle element in your levels too? That would really make the levels superb, especially if you could hook it up so the lanterns and stuff come on when it turns to night.

I do actually have a day and night cycle going, which triggers the laterns around the level and also some indoor lighting as well. (Thanks Deviangeek )As far as the warp gates go, I will have them set to go to the 4 different levels I'm hoping to fit the series into. As for score givers, I don' think I'm going to do that. I will have them able to warp between levels, but It'll just be the same as starting the level from the beginning. The logic is just not there to carry game data simutaniously between 4 levels which all have a certain amount of precursor orbs and power cells. As an added bonus I will put in and extra feature at the end of level 4 for those who have collected all 100 power cells throughout the levels. It'll proably just be a sticker you collect at the end of each level after collectinig all the power cells in that level. I'm thinking of moving part of the HUD on Jak to somewhere close to the village so you can keep track of how many you have left to collect.2011-04-01 17:40:00

First off, may I say, I am definitley looking forward to this series of levels. Jak and daxter was an amazing series, and I'm so glad someone is making it in LBP2. Secondly, the pics look a-mazing! Thrid, I was wondering If I could make some of the sackbot costumes for the NPC's? I'm pretty good at making costumes, and would LOVE to help.

Cheers!,

Wow! I'm a huge fan of Jak and Daxter and have been working on a level as well. Mines more like 1 level created around Jak's eco powers, which you (controlling a sackbot that is Jak) utilize to defeat enemy areas and stuff. Please keep us up to date on this project! Also, are you using a sackbot for jack or the actual sackboy? At this time the only way I could figure out eco powers like fireball, blue eco speed and such was through a sackbot2011-04-10 18:59:00

That's alright, and I'm still looking forward to the series of levels. One question i have is the possibility of side quests? Like the farmer's ya-cow thing?(bear with me, it's been years since I played the game, ps2 broke)2011-04-10 21:49:00

Competition? You'll blow me away. Mine wont be a full scale story level like yours, it'll just be more of like a showcase of his eco powers and such, I'm putting up a thread for just the Jak sackbot (havent started level part yet) in a few hours, I just gotta finish up my homework. It'll be in the object showcase thread

Also, nice to see someone else with a jak and daxter avatar! mines Light Jak, I'm working on a Dark one right now, I need to collect more decorations to make it though.

If you haven't got a music-man yet, I know someone who'll more then likely want to help
His PSN is jjmac13, so give'em a message if you'd like. He's great at recreating music (Though I think a huge part of it is retro.. Even so, he'd probably want to give it a shot :b ) and he does it fast, too. Soo, yeah
