Being nice in LBP is considered Noob'ish?

Archive: 30 posts

Really?!?!? XD

I just, found out this from some people (not gonna say names) that they said people that are all nice and friendly and use stuff like this----> ^_____^ or whatever are ignored and considered noobs?

And that I should be like cold, quiet, and mean to stand out more?....

WTF really? is this kind of thing true around lbp? i mean...i dont get it but yeah im pretty lost on that...

I dont see how being nice is considere a bad thing or something.

Edit* but I gotta admit ive seen this around lbp, some people are treated like kids just cause there friendly or something...kinda ironic..

I can relate. I am a very friendly gamer, and realizing the social networking aspect of LBP comes with its share of big, fat, salty grains, among them huge age and experience disparity, I'm even more friendly to strangers for this reason. We can't always know what the other side is thinking, despite the communication tools -- expressions, hand gestures, text chat, even voice chat -- but it does seem that giving some idiot the benefit of the doubt is often taken as "please treat me as your lesser."

I played a 4P Dive In (one of my last, ever) that took me to the minigolf Mm Pick level, where three friends on microphones promptly dashed my pride against the rocks until even as a grown man and father, I felt embarrassed. Mostly for putting up with it. I smiled at first, typed a few "hahas" at first, then clammed up as they got vicious, taking jabs at my presumed age (dude he must be like 9!), gaming ability (lame! laaaaaame!) and intelligence (hey, hey player 4, are you retarded? text yes or no... he probably can't cuz he's retarded! knock his ball over there! hahahahahahahaha).

Not to get all grumpy.

I've found, through some experimentation, that it's much more effective to type a symbol quickly -- see the Hex grid or if you can handle Japanese, it allows for shortcuts. A musical note ♪ or a star ★ instead of smiling immediately conveys friendliness but also an "advanced" knowledge of text functions, which improves other players' etiquette instantly.

You should have been like, "Are you aware the exuberant prices are at a all time high?" Or "What's that brown stuff coming out your mouth?"

But I usually leave if they're being a-holes. There's no need to stick around and I don't want to get to know them.

But should you be a jerk yourself... NO. BIG NO!!!

Let them be jerks. There's no need to hang with them. And trying to argue with them is only going to feed them.

It is lame that some of the more senior people on this site ignore new people. But that's only some. The majority are nice.

But there is being "too nice" also...
there is something to be said for being cool, calm and collected.

But certainly not mean.

I am always courteous when playing with other people online - that means stuff like waiting for them to make a jump before running ahead etc... not trash-talking etc.

But I can't stand overly friendly sacks who send you a freind request as soon as you join - and keep sending them even when you decline... take the hint
But slap me at the wrong time (on a platform ledge for instance) - or persistently try and hug me - and you shall incurr my wrath!

People who use the word "noob" to describe other gamers are usually spoiled, brattish kids who still haven't grown their first pubic hair.

I would hold more respect for the opinions of my cat than for anyone who uses that term.

Be yourself and don't care about what other people say.
It's pointless to be respected/liked for being someone you're not.
Who fears to be himself on the net will always fear to be himself in life too.

I couldn't disagree more strongly. As i've found out through the two months i've owned LBP and LBP2, being nice and considerate towards the creators levels and them can help greatly on your own reputation as well as making new friends. I don't understand how anyone could see it in another view.

LMAO!! Oh man... that right there made me shoot milk out of my nose! And I'm not even drinking milk!!

Seriously though, it's funny because I've been there and I know the exact look of perplexity that struck your face the moment you read that on your screen.

To the OP... I don't think this is the case with the majority of players. Being nice goes a long way... for sure.

Being cold, calculated, and mean will definitely make you stand out more... but for the wrong reasons. I think what they should have said was be wary, calculate the risks, say what you mean and mean what you say. You'll stand out by standing up for other's who are too shy to stand up for themselves, and always stand up for yourself.

Yeah.. that sounds much better than what you were told. Names please.

XD names? despite I should.... I wont cause that will just..idk, alot of people will hate on them, so despite the humble person I am, Im not going to through them into fire. But yeah I understand about being wary etc.

But still that doesnt mean you should just be a cold person just to stand out or something, cause thats pretty stupid in my opinion...., your just faking to be someone your not. I mean im shy, who would have thought right? Im talking right now to much lol so I might not look like it but I dont think being shy or not has to do anything with being nice or mean.

Well in my opinion atleast.

This is pretty much me. I would even go out of my way to help someone who is having a hard time getting up a ledge when using the grapple hook. Anyone that continues to slap me off ledges and stuff out of spite and not in a joking way, I simply leave.

As for being mean and just plain rude, no...just no. Don't be like them. They're just trying to look cool but they don't know the meaning of what cool is. I'm always nice when playing with others. Even to the randoms I find in Dive In (I'll be glad when I get that trophy out of the way ). Being an older gamer, I rarely see such obnoxious behavior. Maybe it's because I leave right after finishing a few levels with randoms. Anyway, I find that just being myself is enough. No need to be someone you're not.

I don't know that being nice is necessarily considered noobish, but some of it might come from the fact that the knowledgeable and experienced creators are constantly hounded for advice, and they simply don't have time to answer it all while still setting aside time to do their own things. I've had two or three people ask if they could be my "apprentices" (obviously I declined--I want to play the game too ******) so I can only imagine how much the really good creators have to put up with. So they may start to be a bit aloof, which others might see as mean. It's not because they are mean, but because if they helped everybody who asked, they'd be doing it 24/7. This can potentially snowball--other people see that the awesome creators are "mean" so they figure that if they're mean too, people will think they're awesome. And then there's the "House" effect where people think that being a genius means you get to be rude to everybody else.

Still, if you actually look at the awesome creators' posts, they're almost overwhelmingly nice and helpful--they just can't be bothered to drop what they're doing for everybody who comes along.

Anyway I'm a noob and I'm rude
Besides noob is a really wrong term to use...everyone is a noob, and everyone continues to be a noob for all the life, since no one borns with the total knowledge.
People that has not the will to learn from scratch, and that doesn't respect people who wants to learn is *insert the first random bad word that you may think*

I'm a Quiet type of guy, you know, that guy that just stays Quietly in the POD & follow the GL through the level. I don't do anything, but play the game.

If I'm complimented by my Costume, I reply nicely.
If they say I have good Create Skills, I reply nicely.
If they slap me, Oh, it's on. :kz:

No, being nice isn't noobish but you have to draw the line somewhere or you'll be left doing nothing but catering to everyone else at which point you wouldn't be able to help as well as you could anyway because your knowledge wouldn't have advanced.

And yeah @Sehven I get messages and friend requests most days from people asking for help even though I'm not good or online much, you can't answer everyone and some of them get quite upset, I hate to think what it's like for people that have a higher profile >_>

^just set your system language to Japanese 「日本語」. I'm not sure how you switch between kana on a keyboard but there's a button on the internal PS3 keyboard iirc.2011-03-31 01:00:00

^just set your system language to Japanese 「日本語」

@zabel99 Ayneh is correct, that's how you do it.

Use ALT+tilde (~ to switch between Japanese and English when using a USB keyboard.

LONG VERSION FOR SYMBOLS: Go to the 。(empty circle/period) button via the Popit > Text Chat option while inputting Japanese. The 。button will generate a right-hand menu with many symbols. This takes a good while and can be a hindrance.

SHORT VERSION: Directly type "hoshi" (it will come out as ほし and press spacebar. It will give you a variety of kana/kanji/symbol inputs to choose from, like ★☆※星*...

* I'm in Japan with a Japanese PS3 and keyboard. Makes things easier!

I don't think niceness necessarily means volunteering all your time to help anyone who asks. It's more about turning them down politely with a brief message to say "sorry, but really busy...maybe next time", rather than acting like an aloof little diva (Justin Bieber) and angrily ranting "stop bothering me...why don't don't you go play Black Ops with all the other pestilent little bags of rat feces!?"

Even if being "nice" doesn't come naturally to you, if you want to build a good reputation as a creator then you should never, ever crap on the people who look up to you.

Eh, its the internet dude, people will assume whatever they want, and sadly its difficult to change their minds, so I say don't worry about it, not like it really matters.
I'm called a troll in this site because I like saying puns and jokes, a mod kiss up/ wannabe for trying to be helpful, useful or friendly, and many other things I don't think I'm allowed to say.
All because people have an image about me, that altho its not really who I am, that's how they'll see me, and try to see my words that way.

But tbh, do I care?
Cha, no. xD

Should you care people call you noobish for using "^_^"?
Nawww, I use it plenty times, many frineds use it plenty times, some people just want to see them selves all high and pro by making up "noobish rules" that supposedly determine when others are noobs (or any other expression as well.)

Just let it be and ignore it, as long as it not really doing anything to you, then its not a big deal, right?

I like trolls, and I would post my photo of a certain troll under a bridge, but I have a feeling the mods will remove my post again. As for all the brew-ha-ha about playing online, I have several friends I have to turn donw plays with becase I am OCDing on a level and I am trying to finish before work or school. I feel bad for it, and even worse since my network sucks and if I create online it crashes and I lose what I was doing. I feel like a jerk and at times I work offline to avoid ticking anyone off...that said...

...if you are being nice you are a newb! What a newbish mistake for a newb to make. Honestly I am saying this because a newb is implying you are new at it and will learn the ropes...and in time you too will come to learn the powers of the troll. Noobs would not be nice, just rude and demanding in many ways.

Wow. As mature as it may sound, I would have cussed those 3 geeks out on the spot. Depending on the situation, anyways. It's quite common to see muscleheaded dorks on teh intranetz. Truthfully, fighting back wouldn't do anything but make them cry or whatever, so it would probably be wiser to just leave immediately. And the word noob is used by people who don't want to bother saying "You ill-minded buffoon!" Think of it as an abbreviation or maybe an acronym for one who makes an unacceptable error, such as republishing the same no icon h4h level a myriad of times. I usually use "garbage" instead.

P.S. After straying from the main subject a little, I'd like to say that being nice is good. As long as you have a backbone.
