Mechamorphosis: A Top Down Shooter, With a Twist! (finished level!)

Archive: 6 posts

You might of seen this thread up earlier, but you probably didn't, since my levels are always hardly noticed. Well anyways, my level, Mechamorphosis is a top down shooter in which you control a very hi-tech spaceship called the XJM3. This spaceship is no ordinary spaceship though, it has the ability to transform! It has 3 different modes that it can turn into, Normal mode, attack mode, and speed mode. They each have their own strengths and weaknesses. The level's story involves Earth getting invaded by aliens which you have to stop with the help of your ship. The gameplay involves a short tutorial, shooting your way through an alien base, and a slightly hard boss fight. I've also added an optional 3D mode that makes the game slightly easier since you can see farther away enemies. Lastly, here are a few pictures of the spaceship:

I have seriously put a LOT of work into this level, so please don't disappoint me with a mediocre amount of plays. My levels all have mostly good ratings, in fact, I have the totally positive result pin. So play this level, you won't be disappointed.

This is a seriously cool game. I love the transformations, and the strategies you get from each configuration. It sort of reminds me of a Tron tank game. Playing with the 3D camera is trippy, but actually works considering it's a space game.

OK, now.... I would play this many more times if the beginning intro and tutorial didn't take so long. Have you thought of building the intro and tutorial as a separate level and linking over to the second part.... or, maybe at the very beginning allowing the player to skip to the game? I think the amount of time it takes to get into the game again if you die is going to hurt the level.

Happy face and a heart... great job!

@CCubbage, before even reading your comment, I added an opening menu that lets you skip the tutorial.2011-04-01 00:57:00

Pretty cool level! Great concept well executed. Good introduction features, great vehicle capabilities, good original enemies, decent look/style. The ship transformation is a great idea. 3D is an interesting feature but I might've barfed. The controls are a little awkward but they're standard tank controls, so it kind of comes with the territory. I would say that I'd like to see smarter AI in the enemies, so they wouldn't run into stuff so much, but then I'd probably die even sooner. In a tank game, you kind of want little exploits like that. It's pretty difficult to complete evidently, didn't make it through over two serious attempts. Restarted several times to try 3D and because I kept not hitting "skip intro." I think it would be a little more fun if the ship was a little more nimble. I wonder how an Ikari-style twin stick set-up would work? Or maybe even some kind of sideways/strafing movement. I just don't know if I'd have the patience to bumble my way to the end. Both times, I got a little ways into the area where the door closes behind you, but got clobbered pretty quickly between the first two groups of enemies.2011-04-10 05:56:00
