Party Time - First Build - Updated v1.1

Archive: 11 posts

This is my first build after joining the site. It was created due to someones birthday and they wanted a level just for themselves.
I started it in LBP1 , but was completed in LBP2 as they wanted a bot to play with at the end.
I also made it short , so I can get feedback to see if I am going in the right direction or if there are fatal flaws to my builds I haven't wasted too much time .

I will be able to give feed back to other builders only one at a time , due to time limits , but I will give feedback .

Thanks again .

Updated the level . Thanks to all the suggestions and advice. I have left the link to the old level if people want to compare.
I think it is now much better visually . The mechanics stayed more or less the same but just gave the whole level a face lift which it really needed. Let me know what you think. I have just started playing with movies, so I might in the next release add a bit more story via that media.

Make sure to enter your level ID into the thread. If you don't, people will have a hard time finding it. Your level ID is the last 5/6 digits of its lbp.me url.2011-03-29 21:49:00

Played your level, thank you for the huge cake at the end first of all XD

ok now the level is your first build, so congrats on that, now heres your feedback..

The little white character at the beggining, looked cool but You could have used a sackboy, like your sackboy for example and it could be like your telling the story of like to make a party for your friend, which would fit the level more see?

The Design was good, the first part about the sponge launching it off, I gotta admit didnt think it was possible XD but when it happened I was like wow O_O
so thats pretty unique how you made that work

You have a great eye for platforming mechanics, in time practicing im sure your gonna make some awesome stuff =)

Always, always try to experiment with materials, take it from me and always always keep it with you, always try to combine materials and get creative with the layers, you have 3 to make platforming and mechanics and 4 for scenery and other stuff (You can also experiment with the 3D object).

For this being a level dedicated to a friend is really awesome cause I know how that feels I create for a very close friend to mine always.
So thumbs up on that ^^

One thing I can recomend, use game cameras to get right angles when doing platforming, and sticker and decorations, you can like try to use differenct color to make the level look like its a birthday level, for example, heres a pic of something i did, to show you what I mean...http://i54.tinypic.com/2s17u6o.jpg

Like make the level look like the birthday theme and use different materials etc and a music that yells "party" you know what I mean?

Other than that, the rest was good, looking for the Happy letters to spell the suprise etc, thats was enterntaining and well made ^^

Good level, keep creating
Look foward to seeing more from you!

Thanks for the review really apreciated it . Yes I would agree that is my area of weekness and I need to improve the visual side of things .
So will take on board all your suggestions. See if I can come up with something more pleasing to the eye.

Thanks again really made me want to improve and build some more as feel I am now going in the right direction.

Good attempt for a first level! I tend to agree with the other posts in this thread though. There are some interesting ideas, but there's nothing that makes the level stand out and be unique. The visuals definitely need some work. The party at the end didn't really feel like a party especially. I can't really help you there though, that's kinda my weak area too

I would suggest in the platforming areas to switch up layers more, as well as textures and materials. I'd also say try to theme the level. The birthday thing might go well with a candy theme, or maybe the character is looking through a forest for the missing letters? I just think it would look a lot better with a coherent theme, put some trees and other foresty stuff throughout the level maybe.

As far as logic, you can definitely tell this level was started in LBP1. I'd suggest redoing any logic you have and practicing new ways to do it, you might figure out some new tricks that way as well.

One thing for sure I think needs improvement are the speech bubbles. Proper grammar and spelling go a long way in having your level taken seriously. It seems your forum speaking and game speaking are completely different, so I know you can do it

I really liked the fact that you did a sticker puzzle. You really don't see that in many levels. Also the sponge flinging bit was creative, as was the overall concept. It could just use some fine tuning I think. Nice first attempt

Alright I played it again, GREAT updating. I'll give you a somewhat more harsh review, but only because you did such a good job updating the level and taking suggestions into consideration.

Pros:
The visuals look sooooo much better than before. It's amazing what some decorations and textures can do

Cons:
I'd suggest using more LBP2-exclusive features, such as bounce pads, grappling hooks, etc. The bit in the clouds, for instance, would probably be fun with the inclusion of these both. Once you take the elevator, maybe have some bounce pads that bounce you up to the grabbing platforms, and the platforms themselves could be used with the grappling hook (just for fun, no other reason really). Also maybe make the platforms more cloud-like. Adding some bits with this stuff in it could help keep the player content anywhere in the level really.
I felt the party at the end was still a bit lacking. I saw that the textures changed and such, but it really didn't strike me as a reward collecting the stickers. You could add some Randomizer lights around the room (or sequenced, whatever your preference) that flash once you complete it, and maybe some score bubble emitters at different areas as well.

Like I said though, it really felt like you made great improvements over the initial level. My criticisms are purely advice to (hopefully) get your levels some more recognition. I feel pointing out the flaws helps far more in improving than the positives. The level could still use some work I think, but that's ok! A first attempt is all about perfecting and critiquing. Keep it up
