Spectate Mode for your levels

Archive: 6 posts

I wish there was some kind of spectate mode for my levels. That would be a great way to get feedback on my level as well as ideas......................2011-03-29 17:43:00

I'm sure there's a few ways to do that. They could join you in online create mode to spectate and help at the same time, if you trust them that is . If you mean just spectating while you play through the level, then put a close player gate at the start of your level, play it, trigger that and then invite your spectators. You could probably force extra players into controllinators too that follow the player.2011-03-29 18:14:00

Don't you rather want people to play your level?2011-03-29 20:46:00

I think we wants something what Luos is yelling about all the time, speciting players that play your level to see how they play your level.2011-03-29 21:33:00

Yeah I've been thinking about that too. Watching somebody with no idea of your level play it is an invaluable aid in debugging and general improving.

Alternatively, death/quit maps that tell you where people most frequently died, or where they quit altogether.

It's quite an ingenius suggestion!

What you describe can be built on in many ways. I see it as a great way to sample what a level looks like without "giving it a play" -- which would address the problem we see with generic creators who copy-paste levels with baited titles in order to boost their playcount. It would allow you to "join" a 4-player match without joining per se, to watch the dynamics. In fact you could easily have 10 people in a level this way, with 4 playing and 6 watching.

This also inspires a kind of "ghost run" or "save replay" mode where, like taking a picture and uploading it, you could save your playthrough of a level to view or share later. Players could access how-to guides to find prize bubbles without leaving the PS3 to scour the internet. Difficult levels could have tutorials and speedruns and top score movies. Funny level plays could be saved and shared among friends. Not just "come see this level" but "look what happened to me on this level yesterday!"

I suspect this might actually be a feature down the road, for LBP3? It's just so perfect.

This isn't what you're asking for, but the above "ghost run" tutorial style thing, or "how to play my level", can be achieved with sackbots. Build your level, and next to the start gate put 1-4 controllinators or simply trigger a movie scene, so that players can watch your recorded sackbot run through the level showing them what's what. You could even create races this way -- I'm sure players have done this already!

Now I'm getting all giddy about how cool LBP2's new features are. Again. I'll end my comment here.
