Sliding door help

Archive: 6 posts

Ever since I played LBP, i've been wanting to make sliding doors (double door version). i saw it done in numerous levels, but I could never get the mechanics right. i've wanted to use them for elevators as well, but I'm trying to at least get them to close first. Can anyone help me?2011-03-29 06:06:00

Sliding doors should be simple to build with a piston set to forwards/backwards. Can you be more specific about what you want?2011-03-29 07:56:00

Simple sliding double glassdoor design:
(This is just for understanding the basics)

1) Use the small grid.
2) Make a glass rectangle in the thin layer
3) Make a small 0% brightness holo square in the same thin layer about two inches to the left of the midsection of the rectangle.
4) Get out a piston and attach it first to the vertical edge of the holo and then to the vertical edge of the door.
5) Copy the whole thing.
6) Flip the copy and place it so it's right next to the first door.
7) When you unfreeze the doors should be moving back and forth a bit in unison.
8) Adjust the minimum and the maximum length on the pistons to ensure a smooth opening and closing sequence. You can also tweak the speed with the time setting. The time the piston spends on one way is half of the time in the tweak menu.
9) Get out a microchip and place a selector with two ouputs inside
10) Wire output #1 to the pistons and set the pistons to Forwards/Backwards.
11) Place a button and wire it to the cycle input on the selector.

Now, every time the button is pressed, the door either opens or closes.

@Dr C
The sliding doors that open and close, for example, the kind you see at supermakrets (if that's a good example)

@Discosmurf: Thanks so much for the help! I've been able to get them to open and close, but somehow, when i get them to close, they won't stay closed when it was activated to close

Wow! I see that I forgot to mention that you have to slap on a Anti Gravity tweeker set to 100% dampness on the holos in order to make them stay in place!!
Maybe you figured this out yourself? If so, very good!

Hm. Are you sure that you've set the pistons to Forwards/Backwards? The option with the two arrows pointing towards both directions.

Q: Did you want the doors to open only when the player comes within range?

For same level (supermarket doors) I would have a player sensor attached to the pistons that are set to direction, so that when a player is in range it is open until the player walks away.

For elevators you can place holo in the thick layer that detects the player when they walk into it opening the doors. As soon as they switch layers into the elevator the doors will shut (I believe there are same layer Yes/No triggers you can use now) until they (the doors) are triggered again. AND and OR gates are always a good idea for opening doors on multiple levels.
