Pride: (LBP2's Longest movie level)

Pride: A Lion's Tale(LBP2's Longest Movie)
So from the title, you're probably saying "Wow..really? - thee longest movie on LBP2? That's quite an assumtion you're making buddy!" But if it's not, although I'm convinced it is, it's certainly one of the longest movies out there, with a running time of 9minutes and 20 secs(approx.) It was actually ten minutes at one point, but the sackbots started to flicker and glitch, so I cut a scene out.
"So it's long, so what" you say. Let me tell you, I went out of my way to make this a cinematic experience that actually feels like a movie, with a proper begining, middle and ending with a rich plot and actual dialogue. This isn't a montage of funny scenes spliced together, or slap and fart jokes as seems to be the norm for movies. Every scene is warranted, and has dialogue. The subject matter is something else however, and some may not like it, others may be indifferent, but I think you will at least find it somewhat engaging.
This is NOT a kiddie movie, despite the cute characters. Think of Trainspotting meets The Lion King, and you'd be close. This my debut level on LBP2, as I'm making a three parter that will be linked, and it's taking me a bit, so I made this inbetween to let people I'm still around, lol. I hope you'll give it a look-see.
Thanks
-KK

I'm happy to check out well made LBP movies with the aim of looking for ways of improving my own works in progress. I've also seen the amount of thermo used for highly detailed set design and many sackbots+acting and was curious to see where you put your balance to get a long run time but still present a well narrated story.

I enjoyed this movie and while there are disputes about just who has the 'longest' movie and just what it means to be a movie but I'm happy that yours is not significantly longer just for a headline claim. The flow and pacing of the story feels solid with each act set up and executed well. I think there could be timing changes in scenes, in the overall scene progression but this is just getting down to personal preference.

I'm very happy that you restrained both your film making as well as the melodrama of the story. It seems that once certain people get a handle on rudimentary film making techniques that they run amok with wild camera angles, fast cuts, poorly composed shots, terrible lighting choices, over-the-top plot or acting or an number of other film mores. You have firm camera movement, restrained and believable scene transitions and a good use of the minimal created elements and background imagery to set the scene without crowding the shot or cramming the detail into our faces.

There really is only one character in this film with all the other people being fillers for archetypal roles but considering this is a precautionary tale we are only expected to really identify with the central character. Naturally we get the patented Kaiju_Kid emotion in the level which is welcome because of its lack in so many other LBP levels.

I think that some of your other levels revel in their despair and heartbreak and were a bit cloying in parts but this level is more refined in this aspect. There is a bit of subtlety and areas/concepts that the viewer gets to populate with their own imaginations which helps create the collaboration between filmmaker and audience.

The use of the garbled spoken audio worked well though by the end all the different voice types seem to blend together none of them being unique enough or encapsulated enough to be easily identified as belonging to any particular character. The music is set very well to the scenes to create/enhance the tone of the sequence.

You have put a lot of work into this and there is a solid film here. I think there isn't much, sure some spelling gaffs, to really provide concrete advice/feedback on. At the level that I do have opinions are again in the realm of personal preference and opinion. I feel means that this level has risen above the mechanics of its construction and can be, primarily reviewed for the content and technique of relaying it.

I think the strongest elements of the film is the restraint you used so that the medium and emotional histrionics did not eclipse the story you are presenting.

You're absolutely right about restraint, as I wanted the story to take center stage, and not get caught in distracting hyper detailed setpieces. I felt that a more organic approach was in order, and the Jungle background melded with the animal dressed sackbots very nicely without seeming lazy. After all, what sets could have I built that would be better than what was already there. Glad you found the story more tolerable than past efforts, and it's probably because I was going for a storybook presentation that would be easy to follow, and not so heavyhanded. The voice was the same throughout because it's suppose to be the narrarator. People have told me that it seems like a Public service commercial, or an after school special, and thats fine because obviously they got a message out of it, and that was my whole intent. My message was to value your life and make good decisions regarding it, but people take what they want from it, and thats fine.

No, this is not the longest LBP2 movie. Afraid has you beaten at approximately 13 minutes.

Anyway... The Lion King meets drugs? How come the hyenas have yet to die when they party on the same rock that whatsherface fell off of?

That's just a small thing, however. It's a really well-told cute story that puts a central focus on its moral. The costumes were fitting for the set, and the ending was actually emotional, an aspect that is hard for most to pull off within a visual story-telling medium. There's not really much more I can say other than to keep up the quality work in the future.

I like when the director/script writer has enough faith in the audience to be able to think on their own and not have to mollycoddled or manipulated to understand the situation or to feel certain emotions. I think that this movie does allow the viewer freedom to think and feel a great deal more than any after-school special or public service announcement.

I think that you've stayed away from laying on the moral of the story too thickly or looking to push all the emotional pressure points as you could have and that is the restraint that I mentioned.

I did get the impression by the end that the audible voice was a narrator character but I think there were crosses between first and third person narration style that may have caused my initial confusion about the voice acting being different between characters. (Although I think it is more likely that the characters' first person narration was being spoken by the narrator as part of the third person narration rather than any actual shift in narration style.)

It is a nice addition to the growing list of maturing films in the LBP2 scene.
