How do I make a decent HUD?

I'm making a Spiderman Sackbot, to replicate the game play of Spiderman 2 the video game. Its all well and good, but when I design, and make the HUD above Spideys head, so I cut out the Spiderman symbol from the cardboard, but obviously I don't want it to hit a wall or anything like that, so I made it out of hologram and it just became transparent! The big problem with hologram is that white appears white but black appears invisible. There is no ethereal material in the game that shows up black or even grey (although you can fake it somewhat with emitters set to fade holo, but this has undesirable side effects on moving objects from what I hear).

If your spidey symbol is the black spider on his chest, turning it into hologram is going to make it invisible. I'd recommend recreating the shape and using a bright vibrant color like pure red for your HUD icons. Red, green, yellow and white all show up very well for HUD displays. Blue is often difficult to see because it tends to be partially transparent unless observed over very dark backgrounds. Teal is not bad either, but the contrast is still subpar.

Yes, I realised black would not work, so I have used a kind of green. You know what make this easier? That material MM use in the opening tutorial level to write the creators names.2011-03-29 17:59:00
