Digging for Inventizite

Archive: 12 posts

Hello there! Please try my new level, Digging for Inventizite. In this classic platformer you'll have to find your way through a mine abandoned a long time ago to find an all new vein of inventizite, a valuable mineral that is used to increase creativity and make sackboys' and sackgirls' minds fill up with awesome ideas.

This is my first real level. I spent a massive amount of time with it, I believe I started creating it in February. You see, I'm a slow builder. Hopefully You have the time to play it and leave some lovely constructive feedback. I'll probably add some screenshots here later.

I'll gladly do any F4F. My feedback will be as detailed as yours.

Hello! Got yours on my queue now. I released a new level yesterday called Japanese Dreaming. Would you like to play it?

EDIT:

Played it, and I think it is a decent platformer level. Good for a first level. Much better than my first level! Here's some things you could perhaps do to make the level better.

The MUSIC, I think it's a wrong choice of music for the level. It doesn't suit the environment and the mood of the level. I would recommend perhaps: Tricky Business (LBP1 song) if you have got LBP1?? Elsewhere I just think you could choose some of the more "cavy" songs from the LBP2 track list

Thank you for the feedback! It's funny that I already had your level in my queue before you posted.
I'll definitely re-think about the music. I chose What Are You Waiting For because of the adventurous feeling in it, but I think your right that it doesn't quite match the level. I've had LBP1 since January 2010, but I never had the patience to get all prize bubbles (which I did in LBP2) and I don't think I have that song. I might go back and get it. Thanks for the tip.

Good first level; classic platforming, as you say. Was there a way to "rescue" the sackbots? There didn't seem to be any mechanism or hints to do so, granted I only spent a few minutes looking. I think they were a good addition, and you could probably use more of them to spruce things up around the mine, if you wanted.2011-03-28 15:06:00

The sackbots were there only for adding a little more story and some interesting background. There used to be more of them (right after the ones jumping on the bounce pads) but for some reason their little boxes where they lived broke down with all the logic inside them. Got me kinda frustrated so I didn't re-create them.2011-03-28 16:27:00

Haha I remember being the first one to play this

All in all, for a first level this is fantastic, pretty decent length, nice visuals and gameplay.

Few things you could improve on:

- You seem to use on/off pistons where direction ones would work so much better. If you're worried about a lift not coming back down if a player falls, some simple logic would do the trick. e.g Put an AND gate between the switch and the piston, to the input that's available link a player sensor (sensing that you're on the lift). Which means the lift will come down if you fall, but you still need to flick a switch to make it work.
- Overuse of the same ideas, such as falling down a really long gap.
- Blue/green lighting only really works if there's water around otherwise it doesn't make sense. My recommendation would be to go with yellow and light blue (the colour of inventizite), but you can play around with it.

Anyway, as I said before it's really good. Leaps and bounds ahead of mine anyway.

If you feel like giving feedback on one of mine: Sky Path (http://lbp.me/v/zgvq7c) I know I had planned to let you test it, but I'm waayy too impatient. I'll be sure to let you in on the next one though

This level is off to a good start I think. What it could really use is more density because it felt thin at parts. Anything you can do to give the player more things to look at would be good, like the part where you go past the sackbots in the wall, bouncing on the jump pads, or the crystals at the end. Most of the level is just rock and fire, so more decoration and scenery would be good. Try to use more materials in interesting ways, but don't get crazy and random or else the inconsistency will ruin your theme.

One part I thought was just a little more difficult than it needed to be: You have a grappling hook, two sponges on the wall, and you have to bounce off a jump pad on the wall and swing up pretty far to proceed. What makes it difficult is that your grappling hook isn't particularly accurate, so if you grapple the sponge in the wrong place, you have to re-grapple until you're stuck to a part of the sponge that will let you swing upward the right way. You want the challenge to be in the swinging and jumping, and not in trying to get the grapple to stick to the right spot on the sponge. I'd recommend making the sponge smaller so that it's easier to attach to a viable grapple point. That would help make this upward climb a little more approachable, not having to fiddle around so much.

Good job on your first level!

Played your level, good mini story, and character design.

The platforming was simple but good, thumbs up on those camera angles much of them made the level really stand out ^^

Good use of the crystal decorations and the lighting was beautiful also, I havent played the updated version yet but I will soon, The level was great, didnt find any negative things but If I have to maybe recomend something would be maybe a bit more stickers like to decorate the cave a bit you know, other than the platforming was the best part of the level, great job

Thanks! I didn't change much in the update, but there are a couple of things changed/added. So it's worth a second go, I think.
I tried using stickers to make it feel like (sack)people had worked there, but in the end I didn't like it so much. I'm not good at realistic stickering. But I didn't remove them, they're all still there. That's the reason why there are really no stickers in the end, but some in the beginning.

It's got 14 plays, 12 "yays" and one heart. I'm extremely proud because almost every player has liked it enough to give it a smiley face. I'm going to keep listening to all of your feedback and updating this level even though I'm starting another project. So keep it coming.
