LittleBig Puyo Puyo V1.1 (faster grid)

Archive: 15 posts

I've made a thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=52395-Puyo-Puyo-Final-testing&p=800636#post800636) for this in the projects section, couldn't find any assistants though, so I just decided to upload the finished version I had. I've tested it myself, there's a limit to how well that works, but I think there shouldn't be any problems.

Anyway, I'll copy the basic rules from my other thread:

- A bit like tetris, you controls blocks, consisting of two units with 5 possible colors.
- The blocks can be rotated and moved left/right/down.
- The active field is 6x12 big.
- If one unit of the controlled block is placed (hits ground or another block), both units will fall down. (There are no gaps left, like in tetris)
- If at least 4 units of the same color are adjacent in any form, they will pop/explode/disappear or whatever you call it.
- If a unit is placed above the 6x12 grid, it's game over (just like tetris)

For more information, I ask you to go through the tutorial before playing. It's not exactly self-explanatory.

I'm still a bit puzzled about difficulty, I have big bonuses for a 10 combo chain, but it might be pretty impossible to do that, especially on hard mode. I'm not very good at it though, so I don't really know.

Don't know what else to post here, other than it was was one hell of a work to do alone - I spend over 2 months and over 200 hours. It's one of my favorite oldschool games, so I hope it's well recieved

Here's some screenshots (appreciate it, those are really hard to take in a controllinator in a almost completely automated level =p)

Have fun playing~http://lbp.me/v/zb8g2e

Update V1.1:
Implemented my new grid logic, which allows much faster movement, comes close to real Puyo Puyo movement now!
As this allows players to do more burst in a shorter time, I increased the difficulty of normal & easy modes just a bit.
I didn't make hard mode harder, maybe it's actually possible now to get higher chains here =)
Hope it's working fine and you'll have fun!

Hello,

I've tried your level yesterday, and wow! I can see that you've spent over 200h on your level. The gamplay seems flawless (I didn't see at anytime somthing going wrong), the logic worked perfectly. I've never played puyo puyo, but the rules are easy to understand, the controls are intuitive.

About the difficulty, well i'm not very good at falling blocks puzzle, so I guess I can't be trusted, but I've never achieved more than a 2 chain combo. I tink I can only dream of a 10 chain combo. My score was 1220, it seems to be very bad when I look at the higscore, but I can live with that

Overall, it turns out to be amazing ! The only part that was underwhelming for me was the background choice, but I guess it's just a matter of taste.

Great work, I really anjoyed your level ! Thank you

I love puyo pop fever and kirby's avalanche!

Dr. Robotniks mean bean machine was just ok...

I'll try this as soon as I can get on the LBP server. It keeps saying 403.

Wow... I.... I can't believe I missed the release of your new level. Thank goodness the thread got kicked up - Expedition Yagon was in my top 10 favorite LBP1 levels! Not that this looks even REMOTELY the same type of game, but Yagon was the first level I played that truly pushed the LBP1 logic bounderies. I'll add it to my queue for tonight!2011-04-06 23:55:00

Ok, I just played it - WOW, I can only imagine what's going on under the hood of this thing - it's absolutely brilliant. This could easily be a game in the Apple Store of my iPad. Got a definate happy face and a heart from me. Great stuff!2011-04-08 13:44:00

This was awesome I'm a very avid puyo poyo fan, though mostly i call it kirbys avalanche
I set up a simple combo and i have to say its pretty amazing how well this all works, and how accurate it is.

I just wish it took me seriously when I press down. I can get pretty fast and furious with the real puyo pop fever, but the speed of things going on here made me want to cry, since everything else about it was so spot on.

This is really well done though I want to stress that. Make it faster and I'd probably play this over and over just to stay on top of the score table. plus I don't have to bust out the snes/cube for my kirbys avalanche/puyo pop fever fix. Dr. robotniks mean bean machine just kinda seems to collect dust though.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

So glad it was running flawless, I spent probably more than half of the time deleting whole logic blocks and thinking of something else because it produced strange errors ^^
Looking at the scores, someone got 20000, so I think he probably did a 10 chain (he's even japanese xD)
Still I think 10 on hard is kind of impossible; but I included it for hardcore players to have fun anyway.

I actually kind of liked the BG, unless you mean the "black" background, which is there 1 - to make it easy to see the hologram and 2 - because a MM background would overheat the level =/. Also I'm not the best at design.

Nice to see you liked it.

Hiho,
don't know about the logic pushing LBP2 yet, but I definitely had to think very hard and I think I used a few very clever things =o. Calculator was a lot easier. The hardest thing however, was actually trying to keep the logic as small as possible, because of all the blocks.
Probably no way it would've worked with ordinary follower-grid-movement.

I just wish it took me seriously when I press down. I can get pretty fast and furious with the real puyo pop fever, but the speed of things going on here made me want to cry, since everything else about it was so spot on.

I can really understand that. It's also the one thing which has been bugging me the most. It's a limit of the kind of grid movement logic I used, so I'd have to change the underlying "basics". Still, I've been thinking about various way and had some ideas which might maaaybe work if the thermo doesn't burst. I really want to make it faster too.
Time to go back to investigate more grid movement. If even possible, it will probably take long to update though.

Again, thanks for the feedback

Edit: Okay, regarding making it faster; I actually already found a way how it works! The movement will be as fast as a feedback Not Gate pulse, using my new grid movement logic I came up with today. All that's left is a lot of monotonous no-brainer work, because it turns out that the movement is so fast, that I have to expand the "hit boxes" of all the blocks. It's still not as fast as standart puyopuyo movement, but I think it gets pretty close.
I want to try to finish it tomorrow, and do some playtesting, hopefully the result won't give me strange bugs.
I'll definitely keep the old version on my moon though, in case anything bad comes as a surprise

Just finished implementing the much faster grid movement, it's pretty satisfying now imo. I playtested a bit and didn't get any bugs/glitches so I guess it works fine. Updated first post for a bit more info.

Turned on F4F for a bit, I have a lot of time for 2 or 3 days, but I'll turn it off again after. Let's say 3 for now, maybe more (if as many post, anyway) Now off.

This is just so awesome I don't even get how it could possibly work.
The new speed feels nice for sure. I'm still shocked this even exists.

The only things I've noticed that probably aren't a big deal, and most likely would take more work than its worth;
The garbage should fall into the lowest available spots, it looks like as of now its being randomized.
Also. the pieces still aren't falling by themselves, maybe have a timer reset itself every second or whatever, and put the output into the controllinator's down button? I don't know I'm probably way off.

Just minor details that don't really matter.

But yea this is definitely going to be very POPular.

I also read your thread about needing help.

I know these are songs from kirby's avalanche
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOxtixaH-N8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv_F4-8xLno
But these songs are hard wired in my brain to go with this gameplay and i would have a lot of fun to remake them.

If you would like something like that I would do it

Yea, the grey ones fall randomized, it might be not that hard to make them fall into the empty spots. I'll think about it a bit. I have 1,5 thermo left (at filled up board) which should be enough.

The thing about the pieces falling by themselves.. not really as easy as that indeed
It's just really awkward with my concept of grid movement, because it's using a pulsed mover. It would annihilate the thermo if I were to use a grid movement which would make this possible without extra delays.
Actually, I already do have automated down movement in my controllinator microchip, I just have to reconnect two wires to turn it on ..
However, because of mover deceleration etc., simultaneos movements will mess up grid alignment. So I had to add a delay which ,if I remember correctly, is a single feedback-not-gate pulse long.
Even with this minimal delay, the controls got worse enough for me to turn it off.
I didn't try it out with the new much faster movement though, so thanks for reminding. Maybe it'll feel better with it, maybe not.
You can read more about my grid movement in my thread about it if you want.

About the songs, if you want to make them, I'll gladly include them. Not many of the songs of LBP fit to Puyo Puyo anyway. Already had trouble choosing those 10, I definitely could exchange some. And what could be better than music from another puyopuyo spinoff

Edit:

1 - Oops, just came across a bug where the block would move into the border because of the new speed. Should be fixed now.

2 - I tried enabling the down movement. Hmm, I'm not quite sure.. it didn't feel that bad, but the "breaks" you get while controlling the block because of this still feel kinda chunky. Maybe I should include an option to turn it off/on? No idea who'd actually turn it on themselves though, just to make it harder.

finished the first one. I will publish it as a level if you don't get this before I go to work.

I kinda want to do the fever mode song from puyo pop fever but I'm not sure if it will be as easy

Just got the song, wow, it's pretty good, and you did it pretty fast for that
Sorry bout the delay, university restarted and time is lost.

I'll probably make that the standart music choice. Thanks again!
