BlackWolfe's Weird Ideas

Archive: 18 posts

I get a lot of odd ideas -- level concepts, game ideas, or just lone set pieces I'd like to try to make. Consequently, I'm working on three or four things at a time at any given time, and have yet to publish even a little bit.

LittleBigPinball - I hope to make a whole level out of this. Controls will be [R] and [X] buttons, with some thumb stick action (in tandem with the X button). I'll be attempting a TILT feature to help prevent the ball -- which will not be Sackboy -- getting stuck somewhere on the board. I'll try to do a proof-of-concept tonight to see if it'll work the way I hope.

Little Big Movie Co. - Basically a bunch of movie parody levels that will focus more on turning recognizable action set pieces into platforming/puzzle challenges. So far, the first of these has proven to be a bit more thermo-heavy than I anticipated, even in early development, so it looks like I'll have to split each story into multiple levels.

?????? - The concept level(s) I'm currently working on. Inspired by an unfinished-but-released level from Valmassoi (What materials did you use to make that void, Val? Did they come from DLC, and if so, which one?), they ask the question "What happens when insanity gets loose the Imagi-Sphere?"

Your pinball level sounds a bit interesting............

Thanks! Proof of concept is coming along:

Main Cabinet & Tilt Mechanism: DONE
Ball Launch/Plunger: DONE
Ball Dispenser: Dirt simple, just an emitter, so DONE
Ball Counter: BUGGY AND P**SING ME OFF
Game Start Mechanism: Done, kind of cute, but can potentially imprison unwary Sackboys who poke around in coin slots.
Flippers: Not done, pondering combination of normal bolt + piston to avoid wobble-bolt annoyances.
Targets: Not done, but carefully planned
Scoring: Not done, mostly planned

Maybe you have this I don't know, but if you want to make the dispenser look even more realistic, try something like this:

- So I assume you have something like a long tube on the right that curves up and around to the top and the ball shoots through there and gets released in the top-middle area of the machine.
- What you can do is have an emitter placed at the bottom of this tube and emit a dynamic ball slightly above this "shooter". This would make it look like the ball is being released into the shooter and it will fall slightly before landing on the launcher and the launcher would just be a slowly retracting piston that would just release at .1 seconds when it hits the bottom of this tube, launching the ball through the tube. I'll try to draw a diagram here:

_______|__|
_______|__|
_______|__|
_______|__|
_______|__|
_______|__|
_______|__|
_______|_|_|
_______|_|_|
_________O_

The BLUE circle is the emitter and it should emit the ball just above the red launcher so it is almost touching, except it should be emitted with a linear speed of a small number (whatever looks natural so that it looks like it is just barely being pushed up and then drop down.)
I think the rest is self explanatory, the RED is the launcher.

For extra realism, I emit the ball in a chute to the left of the plunger, where a ball would come out of in a real pinball machine. I have yet to figure out how to...

How can I get a piston to move slowly one direction, then snap back at full speed?

1) I am doing all three. (Actually, currently at work on the third one.)
2) It doesn't matter if something has been done before. What matters is that I want to do it (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SincerityMode).
3) I am doing all three ideas.
4) Movie spoofs have been done before also.
5) Have I mentioned that I'm doing all three?

I believe it's called "Flipper Motion." I still haven't figured out which way "In" goes and which way "Out" goes, but you should be able to get it to work with a little trial and error. Basically, set the time of the piston to however long you want the slow part to take, and the Flipper Motion part makes it retract back quickly (once you figure out which way for it to go since otherwise it could snap out quickly instead.) Hopefully this makes sense it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Good luck and take your time testing it before you publish.

Thanks! I wondered what the deal was with the flipper thingy. I wish it would let us set the speeds for both directions manually instead.

I was rude in my earlier response. The pinball thing is just a lark -- and also a fun way to learn about the limitations of the tools (and how to circumvent those limitations). My main goal is not so much to publish a pinball level as it is to experiment and find my own way of doing things. In any event, both of those projects are currently on hold in favor of the third one.

Couple of things:

1) I figured out Flipper Motion, and I'm not sure it'll work for my purposes. Growl snarl pout.

2) This:

"Lenore is waiting." This is the last entry in my uncle's journal. As I return home from the war, my thoughts are flooded with memories of my uncle, and his obsession with deciphering the hidden messages he swore were in the writings (http://www.cs.trincoll.edu/~crypto/historical/poe.html) of Edgar Allen Poe. He was convinced the secret had to do with the house on Green Island (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=boston+map&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Boston,+MA&gl=us&ei=v9ecTejpArOM0QGHgK3jAg&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCIQ8gEwAA).

When he died, my uncle left me his notes, his journals, and his deed to the land on Green Island. Now, I find myself wondering. What if there is a secret? Have I inherited his obsessions, too?

Another quick bump to say that I should be uploading a new level tonight -- it's almost done with testing, then all I have to do is put in the stickers and scenery on the walk up to the challenge area (It's a survival challenge, but a much more full-fledged one than Log Roll). It'll be entitled "Surviving the Dollhouse" and will get its own thread after it's uploaded. Given the setting of the level (a toy factory), the best fit musically was Glockenpop (which I am apparently the only one who likes?), but if you want the song that it was designed for, then mute your PSP and play this video of Tori Amos' "Happy Workers" from the sountrack to Toys:

Honestly, why would I need credit? It's not like I invented the concept of logrolling (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logrolling_%28sport%29) or even of a log rolling minigame (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtAfAEIbBOc&t=70).2011-04-08 21:18:00

The Pinball one sounds very cool! It would be one of the first ones on LBP PSP. 2011-04-09 20:54:00

Pinball's on indefinite hold while I work on platformy stuff. Speaking of which, there are some screenshots of my current big project (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/entry.php?3622-Wizard-s-Spire-Screenies) in my latest blog entry.2011-04-28 04:56:00
