Site randomly going really slow?

Yesterday the site kept going down, and now it randomly slows down. I'm using Google Chrome, and I'm only having this problem with this site.2011-03-25 15:04:00

Yesterday, the entire server was down for about 2 hours between about 11am and 1pm PDT. Current performance seems around average from my POV.

Same thing here too....page loads are frequently upwards of 15 seconds. Been this way for about a week or so.2011-03-25 17:12:00

Opening a forum thread goes really slow for me, but everything else runs just as fast as ever.

This started once the site was back up yesterday.

Aha. Looks like memcached didn't get restarted after the reboot. Just started it up, and speeds seem to have improved.

Edit: Made some additional changes to...

prevent this from occurring in the future
ensure, if memcached does fail, the impact on the site's performance is negligable.

It may take a while for the cache to fully refill, but we should be back up to max speed in a few hours.

It was working well again, but then the site went down. Seems to be back up and running fine again...for now.2011-03-27 01:21:00

The site goes down every day, around the time you posted that, for a couple of minutes, while the main forum database is backed up.

It is, sadly, unavoidable. I mean, I guess we could not back up the forum database on a daily basis...but that's the thing that holds all the posts and threads and everything. We don't back that up and something goes horribly wrong, we lose it all. So it's something we have to do.

What time do you do this exactly?
When the US is asleep and NZ is wide awake trying to post?
