Getting Plays - Must your level be terrible?

Archive: 11 posts

I've got this story level. I've spent, I dunno, 150+ hours on it. The "patch" on my moon glitched somehow, but I was able to publish an unglitched version, and then I took a break from creating. This was about a month ago. In that month, I've had 11 plays, 9 thumbs up, 0 thumbs down, and 6 hearts. This looks like a great ratio, but the number of plays is paltry.

Now, I'm working around the glitch by packing everything up into objects, and rebuilding the whole thing in a new blank level. I'm adding voice acting and various tweaks, and I hope to publish an update soon.

Yesterday, I decided to take a little break from create mode, so I went to Community -> Cool Levels. The third level on the list is "Press Square FAST!"

http://lbp.me/v/z8g98c

In 24 hours, this level has been played over 5,000 times.

What gives? Was this level created by the child of an Mm employee or something? Or is this just another example of trophies breaking the community? The old LBP1 creation trophies led to H4H, which destroyed LBP1's level rankings. Can I get a million plays too if I spend 20 minutes creating a versus level so the hordes can spam for their 25 online versus wins trophy?

First of all: I wouldn't say that getting thousands plays to a level is a stamp of quality. It's more than often got to do with clever advertisement.
Secondly: I believe that more than half of the people that go online to play LBP are looking for short, fast and simple levels that won't occupy them for too long. That's why levels like "Press Square Fast" gets a lot of plays.

Now, back to the first point. If you do nothing, nada, zip to advertise your level, it will drown in the constant stream of uploads within a few hours. Just see how fast posts move down on the boards in this forum.
Earlier, you could bump your level by republishing, but this "loophole" was plugged by MM back in 09.

Nowadays rule #1 is: Be active in the community. At least if you're not a celebrity creator.

Play other people's levels. Play LOTS of them and leave comments and suggestions on how they can improve or about how awesome you think their level was. Try to stay clear of Cool levels(they get enough attention) and foucs mainly on the newly published ones considering that the creators, just like you, are raelly eager on getting attention immediately after they publish. Chances for them playing your level back is very high.
Join fan sites like this. In addition to LBPC you also have LBL(very good), LittleBigPlanetarium and LittleBigNetwork to name a few.
Be active in the forums so that the regular members won't see you as a lurker just wanting attention.
The forums are a great resource for feedback, hidden gems and tips and tricks on how to make YOUR level even better!
I learn something new every single day and this also give you the chance to get in touch with some of the more talented creators out there.

When you advertise, be sure to make a solid thread. Add pics, maybe have a video recorded and SELL your level!
Also, ask for a review as this will not only attract attention, but also give you pointers to what needs to be improved.

Hope this helps a bit!

Great advice from Discosmurf!

I noticed that one of your posted levels here on LBPC is a F4F. My advice is similar, but play other F4F levels and leave great feedback. Be detailed and not just "hey great level". Post the good qualities and anything you felt could be improved or caused you an issue. Once complete with the feedback, then ask them to play your level to honor their F4F commitment. So the more F4F levels you play and leave feedback in this manner, you gain plays and feedback.

One thing that might help... Go ahead and scan the LBPC Cool Levels a bit though looking for other F4F levels. Especially look for well known and well respected creators. They can really lend you a skilled critical eye and if you level is really good, seeing them comment favorably on your thread is like a beacon to others wanting to play great levels. ...but the most important thing is getting that expert feedback to help you see what you might not have realized yet.

Good luck!

I'm having the same problem It's sad when you look at it because some levels out there are gold but never get into cool levels or MM picks.2011-03-24 21:27:00

The "loophole" mentioned is still there, just that you have to modify your lvl first and THEN republish. Helpful tip, lol.2011-03-24 21:31:00

Honestly, I kind of thought that by posting this thread, I'd be breaking some sort of forum rule and the thread would get locked. Instead, I came back to find some really solid gold feedback. Thanks everybody! Also, I guess I got confused by the LPB versus LBP (1 implied) versus LBP2 (2 not implied but actually in the name) forum structure and accidentally posted this in an LBP1 forum. Sheesh.

Somehow, my plays went from 11 to 16 since I posted this thread. LOL, hooray for community involvement! That's more plays faster than my level had seen so far.

jwwphotos is a spotlighted creator but evidently has posted no LBP2 levels? Will keep an eye out. Everybody else who has replied: You three have levels that have great diamond-in-the-rough type stats, and you have been added to my queue. Thanks again for the feedback!

Not if you have a good question and are civil about it.

Who me? lol No, not yet. I am working on something though that I hope to have out in a few weeks. Just been tinkering around with a mini game for the past month or two that has gotten some really great reviews from all that have stopped by. I just got a late start due to both the Creator Spotlight videos and the Caption Contest, but am now taking a break to create! ..so stay tuned! Though my last 3 or 4 levels are still quite playable in LBP2 if you are curious.

Glad you got some feedback. It is tough starting out, but like I say if you use the tools provided here to your advantage as well as make some friends, you really can get some great results. Especially if you keep improving and keep making great levels.

Good luck and have fun!

Oh of course they are! You caught my meening despite my fail at speeking. :B It's just kind of surprising to see someone with a solid reputation from LBP1 but no LBP2 levels.

Steve_big_guns just published a level 5 minutes ago(9:10 PM GMT) and this is an excellent opportunity to study how fast a level aquires plays when it's uploaded by a AAA creator.

EDIT: When I come to think of it. Do you see what's happening? Now I'm contributing to spreading the word. This is viral marketing at it's core!!

<sarcasm>Consider adding any of the following to your level title:

- Trophies
- Free items
- Sackbot double-jump
- Bomb survival
- Mario/Sonic

</sarcasm>

Seriously though, I try to do F4F and just keep updating (not blatantly republishing) my level. A level of mine got over 1500 plays from LBP1 in this manner. Another (deleted now) got a similar amount. No promotion whatsoever really.

Yes, its sad that people get easy plays through "press square", "funny movie" type levels - or just putting s familiar name brand in the title. I always try to grab the players attention with an interesting opening and quickly show them that at the start that effort was put in. I don't consider myself a very good creator. I'm terrible at architecture, horrible with logic, have zero skills with making mechanical things... so I try to make up for it by being original. Success of my levels has always been dependent on word of mouth.

So, my advice (adding o to what others have said) step back and take a critical look and ask yourself, what's different about my level than the other thousands published every day? If you came across your level, would you pm a friend and recommend it? If you can't answer those questions fairly easily, then there is probably still room for improvement in your level.

It won't guarantee plays, but people will start to remember your name after a while. My level Jumper made it to the cool pages, but even after it came down, it continues to get a few plays an hour and had gotten over a thousand extra plays from what I assume is word of mouth. so, I must have done something right! Haha.

Good luck to you.
