Random Joiners?

Archive: 22 posts

While I play online PSN sometimes I get people I don’t know
asking to join me, when I’m by my self I just refuse them,
But when I’m with a friend I have no way of knowing if it’s
a friend of my friend or not, and as I don’t like being rude
I let them join only to find out half the time we both don’t know them (T_T)
I’m guessing they are diving in people, I really wish there was a option
to make it so random diving in people can’t join.

I’m really surprised MM did not do something about this as some
people only like to play with friends, even if you had to turn it
Off every time you loaded LBP it still be better then nothing.

I find it’s really creepy sometimes to have someone join that
You and your friend have no idea who they are.
Because of that now most people will even refuse friends of
friends from joining unless they know them, One just can’t
tell for sure anymore. :S *mew

PS: sorry if there’s topic like this one somewhere.
I’ve not seen one around, so at least there’s not been one for a long time.

PPS No this is not a Suggestion, just that i find the whole thing odd and troublesome.

I think they might be actually trying to encourage you to play with strangers...

Of course, they're fighting decades of conditioning, so it's no surprise many find it unsettling.

Isn't there an option to only let friends join? I recall there being one in the options menu last time I checked.2011-03-23 21:11:00

it's true some people are nice, but some random people are trolls or just trollish,
And that gets really annoying fast. *mew

Edit: oh i think i know what your talking about now,
your talking about the thing it asks you when you are loading a level.
no i'm not talking about that, plus that don't stop random people from asking
to join while your in your pod.

I can't check right now but all i remember there being was,
Reject join requests (This Rejects all join requests, even one's from your friends)
Auto-Reject(It automatically rejects all join requests and if i remember right invites too)
Something feels off about what i just said but I'm not sure.

AhHA! i just looked up what you guys were talking about.
sorry i think you misunderstood. I was not asking for something
to only let my friends join. as if i put that on my friend's friends can't join, (unless I'm mistaken)
as that option you are talking about only lets someone's friends from one's own friend list join~
and like i was saying, i don't want to be rude to my friends and not let their friends join.

But at least they did add the option to let only people on one's friend list join,
odd... i wonder how long that's been there? but it still don't help with letting my friend's friends join.

lol, this is sometimes annoying indeed, lots of time, i let people join because i thought it was a friend of friends, so he join my level, while i editing it, he jumps every freaking place, and them he quits... the worse part, is, most of time i dont see he screwing with my level, then i save it, and when i come back... well... i just have that feeling... to cry like a baby... its sad...2011-03-23 23:05:00

Yeah, some people are quite annoying or rude - or as has been said, think that your level in create mode is a great place to try their rocket out.

I've met some cool people too, so it's not all bad.

I actually have an issue with joining cause the "Dive In" mode is pretty much useless- keeps asking the same person again and again - or just loads, then doesn't work - or playing with other people creates waaaaaay too much lag to enjoy playing (especially with more than 2 people).

It's a shame that the community functions for this community game are still needing so much work.

Luckily, I've not had this problem that I can recall. All of my friends are smart enough to ask first (probably because they are serious creators who know the negative effects letting someone uknown into your Create session can have). I have had the odd person show up who's a friend of a friend, and when this happens I immediately save and get ready to exit the level just in case they were wrong and I let someone in who'm they thought was on thier friends list. Once I know the person is trust worthy, I feel much better and willing to share what I'm working on.

You really need to be careful who you let in, and always ask the other player(s) if they know the person asking to join. All it takes is a matter of seconds for some noobish stranger to come in, place a sackbot, hit "Copy Player 1's Costume", and take off with your prized costume for your level character... or worse yet, your own personal costume you wear. Worse still, they can muck with your creation without you knowing as Tochjunin has pointed out.

What I can't understand is Mm's epic fail of allowing random total strangers to send me invites to join them while they are playing. Who's stupid brain fart was THAT?

Heck, last week I even got one of those annoying SPAM messages that some of you people are silly enough to fall for, stating that "We have been successful! All you need to do is forward this message to everyone on your PSN list and you will receive a $50 PSN card for free!"... from a TOTAL STRANGER!? The dumb part is that the message says to send it to all your friends on your PSN list... but this chump isn't on my friend list at all... so how the hell did he manage to send the message to me I wonder?

I'm all for promoting playing with strangers... but to even have an option to allow them to enter anything but play mode is a fail in my books. There's a lot of great ideas and features of this game... this, is not one of them.

Like everything else these days, safety first.

I'm promoting the "play with who you want", so OK, to play with strangers if you want, but you have to leave people the possibility to play only with their friends if that's their desire.

Besides every "misantropic" behaviour, some awkward things may happen, like when me and a friend, both adult (32 and 26) got in our party a girl that was barely 10 years old and didn't even speak English...and really I was embarassed.
I'm not a pedophile, but seriously, that girl could have met someone badly intentioned.

So, no matter what we would like or not, MM should change those setting for an overall child protection policy. and let only friends join. that doesn't prevent unpleasent things to occur, but it may limit them at least.
I know about strange really awkward things that happened already in the game.
I speak as a potential father that could have his potential kids playing the game.

There's three settings under "Online Play", which I have set to...

When I play a level that has others playing it: Play On Your Own
When my friends try to join me: Ask
When anyone else tries to join me: Ask

...which seems to behave in the way you describe. I think it's option #1 which decides whether others "diving in" will be able to join you or not, not option #3, which I believe only applies to "friends of friends".

1. Turn "let random noobs join".
2. Go into a popular level.
3. Wait until noobs join.
4. When they ask to join, accept the follow request and then go back to your pod.
5. They will pop up in your pod. -- OR -- Step 6. Go into one of your levels, play it with them.
6/7. Repeat. Let them YAY!, BOO!, or heart your levels.

that's odd i did look at them 3 but why do i get random people
asking to join even while I'm in my pod? the one you said only stops it
from happening while I'm in a level yes? yet sometimes it happens even
when i just been sitting in my pod doing nothing for a long time. *mew

I have:

When I play a level that has others playing it: Play On Your Own
When my friends try to join me: Ask
When anyone else tries to join me: Reject

Since then nobody other than my friends has bothered me.

I tend to do the following:

- Accept automatically (both friends & strangers), when I am specifically looking for company (relatively rare, but does happen)
- Ask for the most of the time (also for everyone); I tend to accept if the situation is suitable for it (e.g: trying a interesting level, and not in a hurry)
- Reject automatically for all, when I am in the create mode (I want peace, which doesn't mean other players messing around).

----------------

I think the automatic grouping feature is useful; after all, your friends might not be online (or you might not have any listed on your PSN at all..), and this feature helps to get someone to share your playing experience with. Only that MM needs to improve the matching code:

- There should be a specific order in which players are picked (unless there is one already, and there is a geniune shortage of players) : automatic acceptance > ask with good recent history (have accepted several players recently) > others that require asking.

- Also, the joining features (Dive In + level join) should try several players at once, not just one.

-----------------

And about child protection... maybe MM could make more granular restrictions, such as disabling chat (except for premade sentences)/voice?
