Winner/1st Place ONLY Prizes Awarded

Archive: 5 posts

So I've been thinking about how much I hate going through levels with other people and forgetting to have my "Collect Community Objects" unselected, thereby receiving unwanted prizes when other players grab them. As we all know, giving prizes is always a tough decision, as you have to know that many folks won't want them unless they are hard to find objects, or really well made and useful ones like great original music scores or really good generic props or vehicles.

While working on one of my levels today, I had an epiphany of sorts with regards to prizes.

Wouldn't it be fantastic if you could award a prize to only the top player in your level? For VS. games, this would be fantastic.

Scenario: You have all 4 players battling head to head, then when they reach the scoreboard the the top player is awarded a special prize for being "Top Dog" and getting the highest score. If the prize is cool enough and people will want it, it may not only convince them to play again in an attempt to get the prize, but it may also help direct traffic to your level by word of mouth once other people start wondering where said cool music was obtained.

Thoughts? Pro's? Con's?

For VS. games, this would be fantastic.

I think two things:

1. it would be annoying if you did want a certain item but couldnt beat your friends (not really a problem but i can see it being an irritation having to play a level multiple times so everyone gets the prizes)

2. I only want to get prizes from a level if it is a giveaway/tutorial level so i definitely think we should have some alternative to "collect community objects" since i cant be bothered really

although i think your idea is a good one it would appeal to a niche market, so i think Mm will probably just leave it lol

well i think they'll leave it the way they have it...because if people feel as strongly as you do...they'd probably develop a way within LBP2 like the SCORE prize machines in story mode and such

but its still a nice idea to think about

One con would be the players could just replay it in single player to get the prize.
Unless it was a 2/3/4 player only level.

I think it could work as a pin though.

Thanks for the feedback.

@Skalio- As for it being an irritation... that's the point. It's only a prize given to the top player. It's a reward system. It's no biggy really, as they could just go online and play it with other people... or ask their friends to "let them win". Besides, I don't want easily irratated players playing my levels anyways.

Being able to turn off collecting prizes is still an option... but for those that want the prize, I think this would be a neat little addition... much like Ace Level prizes.

@Shadowcrazy True, but the whole point of this is that only the high score player receives the prize. Prize machines still give the gift to everyone.

@midnight_heist Yeah, I was thinking this would only be an option if the game/level detects two or more players.

I think if people actually put useful or quality prizes in their levels, this concept might be more accepted by the general playing community. I don't think it would be all that hard to implement, and it would certainly be more useful an option to myself and many others than collecting pins or non-existent trophies.
