Community Spotlight Episode 2

Archive: 52 posts

Welcome to our second Community Spotlight! For those of you who don't know, Community Spotlight is a way for us to show off, or "Spotlight", our favorite levels made by you! We scour our Level Showcase (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=40) for awesome levels, and we neatly organize them in a list format to allow you to easily find and play them on your own. We've got a roundup of 17 different levels for you to tackle, all of which are fantastic in one way or another. If pictures and/or a video is available, it will be provided in the listing. In order to keep this fair, these levels are not listed in any specific order.

Level Title - Forum Username/PSN Username - Original Thread
Mayan Sane Temple - RenderFX/RenderFX - Thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5225)
Description:

"I've just published my fifth level, "Mayan Sane Temple" (no quotes), which represents close to 80 hours of work & testing. I consider it to be my best level so far. I spent an inordinate amount of time ensuring the experience melds with the soundtrack.

There are a few sidequests and score challenges, which are completely optional - if you want the points, you'll do them, if not, you can breeze through the level in about nine minutes. There is 2x section, as well as a key hidden in the maze that unlocks a related challenge stage." - RenderFX

Run sackboy run - dorien/oooDorienooo - Thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5207)
Description:

"The level has you running at full speed the whole time and constantly in danger of being killed by moving electrified hazards. You follow a yellow path and have to grab and push different objects (also yellow) and are constantly running and swinging and jumping all over the place." - dorien

Alchemy Anthology: Fire I - Antlands - Chaz'oSulls/ChazoSulls - Thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=4750)
Description:

"It's the first level in hopefully a long running series (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=71632#post71632) (depending on the popularity of this first level). Please check it out and give me some feedback whether it be positive or negative.

The first level in the fire series is set in a barren, volcanic mountainous region inhabited by...Giant Ants..... But don't worry, they're actually a friendly bunch. Except those dang red ants that seek enjoyment out of lobbing fireballs at passing by sackboys.

The level is straight up platforming with a strong theme of fire of course. Dotted around the level you may come across colourful and bizarrely talkative sign posts. Right now, they do nothing. But if and when the series becomes fleshed out, they will have purpose." - Chaz'oSulls

The Clocktower and The Great Blue and The Finale - Tyler/Tylerburrito - Thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=4821)
Description:

A 3 level series, aptly dubbed "Sack in Time", that will have you bribing pirates, fighting giant crabs, and killing quite courteous hexagons. Overall, this is a great series that you just have to try.

Media(if available):

The Clocktower and The Great Blue and half of The Finale (I'm not ruining the ending!)

This level features my patented new Infinite Level Technology (tm) and a challenging new boss, enjoy! " - Gilgamesh

Groovy wheel of color - BinkTGH/BinkTGH - Thread
(https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=4670)

A nice break from the platforming of most levels, this level will have you speeding around in a "Groovy wheel of color" collecting points and heading for the exit.

I won't comment on specific cases, but I'll provide the process I go through when I decide whether or not something should be spotlighted:

Is the level fun?
Do the aesthetics of the level work?
Are there any new ideas presented in the level?
Is the level obviously superior in quality when compared to an "average" level?
Are there any redeeming qualities to the level other than the above four that could make it worth spotlighting?

Generally, if a level doesn't earn a "Yes" to at least three of those 5 questions, it's not going to be spotlighted. Also remember that most of this is subjective; my idea of "average" might not be the same as the next guy's.

Phew, I just finished playing all of the levels here that I hadn't played until now. There are some real gems up there, that's for sure. I've hearted about 4 or 5 of the levels here.

I'm also very happy to see my own level that I worked so hard on here. It makes me feel like continuing with the Alchemy Anthology series is worth it. Thank you muchly! :arg:

Well alrighty! I'm going to make it my absolute mission to get featured at least once.

That didn't take too long. ^___^

Haha, after kit07 reviewed my level a 9/10 on his blog, I wrote this in a PM:

"I appreciate it since I put a ton of effort into making it. Now I hope it just gets spotlighted one of these days."

Little did I know it would be so soon. Thanks, guys.

And I'm quite surprised that my "Earthquake Evasion" level isn't up there.Last spotlight, I thought TOSAM deserved to be up there and I honestly thought it was better than some of the levels up there. BUT I didn't worry about it. I didn't even mention it. I just congratulated the people who were spotlighted and got over myself. And now, it has been spotlighted later on.

So don't worry. If it's good enough, it will be up here eventually.

Congrats to all who made the spotlight. I played most of these levels before they made this list and Temple of Sun and Moon and Midnight Train are particular standouts for me. I am surprised Earthquake Evasion and Abandoned Coalmine are not featured but perhaps they will make it into the next one.

1. Is the level fun?
2. Do the aesthetics of the level work?
3. Are there any new ideas presented in the level?
4. Is the level obviously superior in quality when compared to an "average" level?
5. Are there any redeeming qualities to the level other than the above four that could make it worth spotlighting?

I think another factor that should be considered is: Is the creator of the level an active member of this community? It is no secret that some people have been joining the forums for the sole purpose of promoting their levels but have no interest in leaving feedback for others and being a part of the community. This being the "community" spotlight I think the creator should be contributing to this community in some way. It is still possible to give a level credit by playing it, hearting, leaving comments and giving it a high rating if it deserves it but to highlight it here just does not seem fair to some of other other members who are really part of the community who may have levels deserving to be on the list and did not make it for whatever reason. But it could be that only I feel this way

The other option would be to create a panel who decides collectively...

Well, that's practically part of it already. In the case of people who post and never return, they would never answer the pm to get into the spotlight, and as such, wouldn't be in it.2008-11-29 23:45:00

Sorry but I know for a fact that some of the people who have been featured have not left feedback on anyone's levels but rather respond to their own threads if someone has commented on their levels. I would be very surprised if I am the only one who has noticed this...

I completely agree with you here. We take forum activity into account when deciding, but it doesn't have any weight when determining the quality of a level, which is why it isn't in that set of questions. BassDeluxe, they do not have to reply to the PM to be included in the spotlight, though, so that doesn't really apply.

We've already got a panel that decides collectively (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=5359). So far there's 3 members (BassDeluxe, Chaz'oSulls, and Whaaaaale), but it's still open for applicants.

They don't have to reply? Well, maybe that should be a requirement.

Or we could go with Ock's old idea of having a certain post count before being able to make threads there. I always thought that might be a good idea, though there are definitely cons to it too.

I personally don't think that should be case. Luckett_X promoted his levels there and has never returned but his levels are amazing and I wouldn't want to miss out on anything like that.

At the same time, I suppose it is pretty cheap for people who don't bother with the community to have their level take up space in the showcase.

This levels popularity has been such that you would have heard about it anyway, regardless of whether he had joined these forums (I played the Sackhoutte levels before he joined us here, both hearted and 5 star which is what I meant by other ways to give a level the credit it deserves). But that is a great example of someone joining to promote their levels and then disappearing (although I am sure he will be back once his next level is released...) and not the only one from those that have been featured in the 2 spotlights.

Check me out getting on the spotlight lol

I would agree with waht people were saying about active users should get priority. But only if it is deserved.
Also as Chas said I wouldn?t like to miss out on some gems that might of sliped through the net of cool levels but are verthy of recognition and have been advertised on here.
The fact of replying to a PM wouldn?t solve it though, as i am a very active member and I didn?t reply as I am on a lads weekend away (I?m still there at the mo actually and fly home tonight - how sad to be on here while wawy with the lads lol)

i already played them they were nice i liked run sackboy run a lot

You have very good taste my friend lol
As anyone from here managed to finish it yet
I will see tomorrow as I don't get home till tomorrow morning and I?m not gonna go into work as I?m gonna throw a sicky lol

But I do think mine will be on it. If I didn't think it deserved it, I wouldn't have published it.
