Do You Like Your Hometown?

Archive: 97 posts

Next year, im going to be moving away from where I grew up. I am happy to be leaving.

I live in a nice town, but the people ruin it. I have come to the end of my time living here, virtually friendless, with no future for me if I chose to stay. Im ready to go and start fresh with a fantastic opportunity ahead of me - hard work payes off.

So I ask you. Do you/did you like your hometown?

My answer is no. The town itself is a pleasant enough place to live, but (this may be uniquely my experience) my age group of people are nasty characters. Thoughtless, careless and self centred. For me, living here, the only person I could rely on and trust was myself.

Who know's, maybe this is the case everywhere, but something tell's me it isn't. It's time for me to go.

Of course I love my hometown. I mean, there's a reason why it's affectionately nicknamed "America's Finest City".

Many major attractions are within just miles of eachother, from Sea World to Balboa Park to the Big Bay itself! The gateway to Mexico is just south of here, so going international is a breeze. Sunshine and great weather are a standard here, with rarely a rainy day. There's always something happening too, whether it be a jazz festival or a concert, or even Comic-Con itself. Couple all of that with pristine beaches, beautiful people, friendly service and an ever-present mood of a laid-back lifestyle, and you've got one sweet place to live.

San Diaego? I know man, I visited about five years ago. It's great! I was in a house right beside the beach, on the boardwalk. It was awesome. Went surfing nearly everyday!

California is definitely in my top 5 places to live......LA's a bit grim though. :/

Hmmm... Well, there are a lot of improvements my hometown could need, though i suppose it is alright. I would have preferred if it was a bit greener... Actually not much more, mall is at an acceptable distance, school is good and I have not that many troubles with other stuff. Though I do, as you Mr_T-Shirt, have problems with self-centered kiddos. I'm an oddball (last time it was time for teacher/student evaluation, or whatever it is called he told me all the other teachers as well as him found me strange, but in a positive way of course XD), but I don't get bullied, luckily. They don't enjoy my view on education, as I am one of the few who actually bothers to cope with it (BAM!)...

I am thinking of applying to a french high school (whatever the 11th-13th classes are known as), then, if I manage to enter, I will be rid of the old and start a new life without having to bother with people who have too many prejudices :S

My town is basically a bus stop to Oxford, which is in turn a bus stop to London. And for that you can view the post above me.2011-03-20 23:14:00

I don't know really, I don't remember too much about where I gew up. I remember my teachers telling me I had problems though...
And how they didn't like me mixing with orther kids...
And someone I knew became possessed and started biting, scratching, hissing and called people scum...
The more I think about it, the more my childhood seems bad...

The town itself, not so much. The council spends it's (aka our) money on complete crap, everything is too spread out, public transport is near nonexistent (ridiculous considering my last point) and in the city area there's no where near enough parks imo.

I do, however, love the natural features of my town. Surrounded (or girt ) by hills and mountains, fantastic beaches, great weather if you like tropical weather and we have a beautiful island that's just a 20-30min boat ride away.

I hate where i live sometimes, and other times i love it. People my age are not very good people, but then again who really is a good person now days. I have about 4 people that i call friends, everyone else I just say hi to out of politeness. I'd like to leave but I never made any good decisions when i was younger, so I'll never have a nice career that will get me out. It's just the crappy factory worker life in the small crap town for me. Though I will say that the surrounding area is one of the most beautiful areas around. I've hiked the Appalachian trail, rock climbed, and done a lot of cool things like that. But eventually the natural gas industry will probably destroy most of it. Another reason I don't want to be here anymore. Everything is changing. Rent everywhere is going up so high that many people are now stuck where they are, or getting kicked out because "Hey, I need to be getting $800 a month instead of the usual $450." Anyway sorry for the long rant.2011-03-21 02:59:00

$450 is really cheap. $800/?500 sounds about right for a single bedroom flat. Lowest here is around ?400 (unless you houseshare of course) before council tax though you can reclaim some of that through the lha. Rent can be cheaper elsewhere in the country though.

I have long given up being able to own a property in the UK, ever. The only option for someone like me is council housing.

Well, I live in Rome since I was 6 months old.
Though I love livin' here (even if I would like to live somewhere else), I never considered Rome as my hometown.
My hometown is a very little town between the mountain and the sea in the Eastern side of Italy.
A city with a very old tradition, supposedly founded before Rome, and it's the place that gave the name to the Adriatic sea.
Atri (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atri,_Italy)
I feel a strong connection with the place, with the nature and when I go there, and breathe there I feel at home, it's a place that gives me peace.
I loved to go there and stay with my cousins when I was a kid, until the place infamously became the town with the highest rate of alcohol addicted youngsters in all Europe.
Lots of friends got lost...some died really young, so it's a place of melancoholy too.
As always what is beautiful is ruined by human degeneration

I'm not sure, I didn't live there for long (I haven't been everywhere for long, we move constantly.), but really, I'm not one of the people who are all "Go [my country] yeah, woooo, every other place suuucks, this place is great!" you know?
I can actually be neutral when speaking about my or any other country pretty much, since I don't really care about nationality and stuff.

I mean, I like the place from what I can remember, but maybe not my favorite place ever either.

Where I was born was populated with wangsta rednecks, I hated it.

Now I live with annoying preps, it just gets better and better =/
On the bright side of things, people are somewhat nicer and don't want to kick my *** every time I walk outside.

I like my hometown a LOT!!

Considering I only Spent one day in it.

I was born in Paterson, New Jersey.
At the time, my parents were living in Bronx, New York, they had to stop on the way back to their house 'cause I was "kicking" and all that junk.
After that We moved to Arizona.

My hometown? Like it? Pahaha. It is horrible. I live 1hour from Belfast in a small town of population of about 400 people. I'm friends with 90percent of people my age, but I always get the feeling that they're not very reliable or good behind my back. The Main reason I don't like my hometown is because it was basically the centre of republican attacks for a while. It is the ugliest town ever with a big old army barracks in the middle. It got bombed twice last year. It may sound like I live in bagdhad, It really isn't active at all. Just some very rare bomb attacks. So I hate my town for it's ugly look, ugly history, and drunken society.2011-03-21 22:01:00

My hometown is okay. Nothing happens here, it's near denmark, near the city (though I never go in to the city), near the beach. I wouldn't want to live here forever though, totally moving to some bigger city when I'm older. I guess there's around 7,000-10,000 people living here.2011-03-21 22:13:00

I experienced (via long holydays in my hometown) both the pros and cons of small town and big cities.
Life in the small towns is really sized to mankind with the right paces, few stress and things like this, but you don't have privacy, since everyone knows you, and in the no internet era you were really set apart from the World.
In big cities you find everything you need in 4-5 km max but life is always stressful, people doesn't laugh and smile so often, paces are insane, traffic, smog...

If I could I would move in a peaceful area, not in a big city, though I know how would miss the city.

Too bad I've never lived there. My house is 15 kms out of town, here:

http://www.nzta.govt.nz/network/maintaining/management/img/ashhurst-bridge-flood-original.jpg

I take the bus every morning to school, which is combined with the two dodgiest schools around.

Once a guy used my head as a bongo drum.

Once a guy had a bottle of ginger beer which said 'invert before opening.'
"What does invert mean," he asked his friends.
'I think it means shake," said one.
They all agreed.

Of course, that's not what invert means.

Ginger beer went everywhere.

I guess ideally in cities people would have enough living space to have some peace and quiet and working hours would be staggered so everyone wouldn't be trying to do everything at the same time.

Thankfully i Never have taken drags, smoked at all, or even have drunken alcohol, not even once in my life.
(at least not to my knowledge) to be honest i have always tried my best to never do anything i find to be
wrong to the best I'm able. plus one has to take care of their body i believe,
also one's mind that being why i have never knowingly lied, (at least not to my knowledge)
sure i have been wrong about a lot of things in life, but that's because i was mistaken.

Anyways i find one should live his life as close to a Hero as possible~ Love, justice, and stuff~
yes stuff. plus add a little crazyness in there for fun. then you got a good life~

Bla blabla, Don't smoke kids, its bad~
Now go play Pokemon *mew

Yeah right you haven't lied!!!! You might not remember, but I know you have
I don't think alcohol is bad, just what you do when you get overly drunk is bad. So it's not he alcohol's fault, it's your own, but we all have different views on life. Yours seems to be completely pure and stuff O.o
Anyway. No I don't like my town. Kids are more stupid and immature each passing day. It's really scaring me. What will they be like as adults?
(I'm not saying that I'm perfect and mature, I'm not all that mature, but not to their extent There's graffiti everywhere, on the desks, windows, and not just on school property, but houses as well. People are always using drugs......I don't like it.......

like i said, at least not to my knowledge i have not knowingly lied.
yes even as a kid i found it to be wrong. it was like: why should i
say anything other then whats true? mind you i never really much talked to people.
being i was super anti-social, still am offline. so some may say
i just never had a chance to lie until i was old enough to make it a belief not to~

But yeah enough about me,
I'm not going to argue over something silly~

Our homies eh?

In a land of breezy autumns, moisten springs, warm summers and ice cold winters..
Called Sweden. There was a small town, surrounded by two mountains and the sea. This place was a magical place, as even when the town had burned down four times it was yet to be ruined. At the city centre there was now big houses made entierly of stone, so the people of the land nicknamed their home Stenstaden. which in english means The Stone City. The people where happy with their life at the city of stone. The city had more than houses of rock, also statues of dragons could be found along the streets, as a token of their artistic people, and to heathen their city which also known as Drakstaden The Dragon City.

Once a year at winter, they celibrated Christmas with a big Christmas tree in the city centre next to a statue of the city's founder, they played music and danced with living lights as fireworks covered the sky. The kids threw snowballs at eachother, the teenagers kissed, the mid-aged danced and the old people laughed, all was happy.

There was also a big amount of people cheering a little father away, they observed a smaller group of people as they kicked a ball back and forth into the other's goal. In the same building but in another room, the group smacked a little black disk as they rapidly glided over ice.

Yet futher away on top of the mountain, people glided their way down on skis, and some climbed up through the woods, others rested in hotels and enjoyed the veiw over the city and the fireworks. On the other mountain that the people called NorraBerget (in english Nothern Mountain) simply cause it was to the north of the stone city, a group of young people where firing off the firework. Nearby the white tower (which had some lights that made it look like a huge candle from below the mountain) a lovely couple where deeply in love, kissing.

Yes this place was filled with historical buildings, schools, churches, boats and impressive factories (factory...)
Everyone loved their home, The Dragon And Stone Town was indeed mazing, but what was this place really called you might ask?

This LittleBigTown.. That i love more than any other place in the world, was called

Sundsvall.

Yeaah.. It's pretty nice here but i think im gonna move somewhere to stockholm instead so i can't find a artistic job that fits me.

I like mine, yes. My school is just down the road and for the most part, people there are nice. Going to town exposes some of the bad bits (the shopping centre's grim (though apparetly it's going to be done up soon, yeah, I'll believe that when it happens) and it genrally has a lot of immature teens haging around), but mostly it's good

May I ask, does anyone here live in Dallas, Texas? We were going to move there in January/Febuary this year, but didn't because we realised we wouldn't be able to get the money for a collegue fund. What's it like?

I really like my home town it’s not the stereotypical Oklahoma town where all the houses are on farms and stuff, it’s a very nice town has one of the best school districts around and most of the people are very nice (you can’t beat southern hospitality). the only drawback is that about a little less than half the kids my age are pretty self centered and are jerks but they get better as they get older. I really have nothing else to say other than that jenks is a great town.2011-03-26 05:19:00

Oh since we're all posting pictures now I thought I'd contribute a little more than before. Nothing in the way of night scenery really, my town was built too long ago for that. (By that I mean that half the house I live in is 700 years old and there's an old Abbey down the road which is over 1000)

Pictures snapped from wikipedia.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a6/Abingdon_bridge.png/800px-Abingdon_bridge.png
O looky a bridge!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1e/AbingdonHall01.jpg

I've thrown up where the photographer is standing one too many times.

Of course what these pictures don't show is the traffic, HUGE council estates surrounding the place and some really ugly 70's development on the right of the 2nd picture

Nope.
It's known as the chavviest town in our county (which apparently is in turn the chavviest county in England), and you can't go out when its dark without seeing people lurking around shops drinking beer and smoking (and most of these people don't look any older than 13), which is a reason whenever we decide to get a takeaway I never go alone (sounds kind of wimpy I know, but if you knew what the town was like you would too).

There are however, quite a few generally lovely people who live here, who unfourtunately I don't get to see to often ):

This page has tons of great things to say about it. That beautiful Mt. Boney (first pic on the right) is right in my backyard, the majestic giant looks good in any light. Amazing to hike on it too. Also, you can spot an Indians head in the mountain It is facing up to the sky and is made up of most of the mountain.

Surely he's answering the question in the topic. It says "Do you like your hometown?", he's saying "no". The 10char thing got me as well, but I worked it out.

I wasn't born in Northampton by the way, but we moved from where I was born to Spokane, America when I was one, so I don't remember any of it (not much of USA either, to be honest, but I did leave when I was three).

My town got rated the number one worst place to raise your children in the United States by some website a while ago lol. Its called Fayetteville and the only thing we have going for us is we can't really feel the effects of a recession because Fayettevile is home of the biggest (populated) military base in the U.S. That and one of the biggest rappers out is from here2011-03-31 03:51:00

thats where i live on the world map XD(the white dot in north america)

The town lies at a lower elevation than most other parts of Alberta, so under the right conditions it can be a 'hot spot' for Alberta or even all of Canada (as in April 1980 when its daily mean temperature of 10.0?C was unsurpassed by any other Canadian station). Temperatures average -19?C in winter with the lowest recorded -50.6?C, (-58?F).[9] In July temperatures average 17?C, with the highest recorded being 37?C in August.[9] Its annual precipitation amounts to 455.5 millimetres (17.9 in) and falls mainly in the summer months, its snowfall is 155.8 centimetres (61.3 in)[9] and appears within a range of 5 to 7 months.

i wouldnt mind where i live that much but there isnt really much to do here and the community only cares about money so about -30% people vote and a lot of people don't take care of the enviroment.
the municipality also took away plastic bags instead of setting up a recycling program *sigh*

I was born in Florida, but we left when I was two, so I don't remember any of it.

I'e grown up in a really generic town. There's nothing WRONG with it (besides our school system), but it's pretty bland. There aren't any tourist attractions at all, so it can be boring at times.

I loved where I used to live, and but I am so glad that I moved to where I am now 10 years ago.

I have made new friends, I go to an AMAZING school, and I have grown closer to my grandparents because we only live 2 minutes away from them now.
Personally, I am glad that I moved from my hometown when I was young rather when I had a ton of friends.

God has really given me a great place to live.

I would go as far to say that I love my hometown. When I left school I moved away for three years to a place called Tile Hill in Coventry, my hometown is in Kent so it was quite a distance away. I don't know if it was because I was away from everybody I knew but I hated every minute of it. I moved back and made a vow never to leave it again (permantly anyway) and I never have.2011-04-13 01:13:00

Okay. I mentioned my real hometown (San Diego) and my birthplace (La Mesa), but there's still one more...

http://www.alpinechamber.com/Assets/PineValley_pic.gif
It's a tiny, woodsy community, that lies in a small valley off of the main interstate. It's called Pine Valley, and it's perhaps one of the smallest towns in San Diego county. It isn't known for much (it's biggest businesses are a retro diner and a post office), and there's no real appeal to it besides living in the woods. But it holds a close place in my heart... because it was my home town when my family was fleeing from the 2003 wildfires.

Many of my neighbors, friends and other folk fled to here, and it was really the last town to have a fire station; everything beyond that was parched shrubbery, dried grass and eventually the desert- but by then, all of San Diego County would've been burnt to a crisp. We stayed there for as long as we can, even after the power went out (I was on the toilet when that particular occurrence happened -_-"). We were only moved out once the fire got too close. I was asleep when it almost caught us; luckily, my dad evacuated my family out of there and found a safe-route around the fire to get back to the city. It really felt like my home... because I had no idea if I still had one.

And just so y'know what that fire looked like, here's a photo:

However, once you're in the country (which isn't far away) it gets really rural, really fast. I'm talking dilapidated barns, rusted-out cars and farm equipment, small old houses with yards full of junk, and even the occasional stars n' bars flying high. I try to stay in the city as much as possible because when I leave it I'm reminded I live in the [literally] stupidest state in the U.S., which is depressing.

I personally enjoy that rural country feeling.

Surrounded by mountains, nice large lakes.
Abundant wildlife, very low crime.

We also used to be the first line of defense during the Cold War, We had the farthest most military base in the U.S.

And supposedly we have a monster in our lake.

I wonder if I'm the only person who has their hometown on YouTube. I'd link the video but I'm not sure if one slightly rude term in it would be acceptable.

It's a decent town, but the town centre is ruled by ASDA (literally, they own the place after all) and the secondary school also in the town is relatively ignorant to problems it has to the point I had to get police to go in the place for my own safety when there. Luckily my town is in the middle of bigger towns and London is only like an hour away, so I can easily escape anywhere I want for a day if I feel like it. It's OK though, I guess. Just not a lot to do though for sure.

I hate my hometown, high on criminality, some of the dumbest people in the netherlands (dordrecht scores really low on IQ) and the surroundings are.. almost mindnumbingly dull.
On other hand, the centre of the city is one of the first villages ever build in the netherlands.. and that looks nice.
sadly architects nowadays are as dumb as the forementioned dordrecht-citizens and any new buildings they add are like a huge cube that doesnt fit and suit the original village making it look more and more like an abstract pile of manure.

I hate my hometown. It's dirty and crowded. Even if I were to simply move to a more rural, spread out section of this state, I'd love that so much more than where I am now. I've visited other states, and I'd love to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma or Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. They're spread out, cleaner, and overall just far more beautiful than here, and the people are friendlier.2011-07-06 16:09:00

My hometown is nothing really special to me, but it's the one that had a major tornado back in 1966. It is also the city where Brown v. Board of Education came around many years ago. In fact, when I was in high school, I attended its 50th anniversary play. 2011-07-07 04:44:00

I live in Amarante, a little town in the north of Portugal. It's medium-sized by the standards of my country though... 60.000 inhabitants spread over an area of 300 km2. My relation with it is kinda love-hate. On one hand it's calm and very "green", full of gardens and parks everywhere. Whenever I sleep in a more urbanized city I'm unnerved by all the noise of cars and people outside. The cultural centre is also very beautiful, with the river, the ancient bridge and huge monastery, a few monuments, etc.

On the other hand, there are reasons for me to hate it sometimes. There's no train station, so whenever I have to go to somewhere far away like Lisbon I have to visit a nearby town to catch a train. I would love to go watch a movie each week but there is no movie theatre. There was once, and even then it was nothing more than a single room that displayed 3 or 4 movies a month, all of them already available in DVD. I have to drive 60 km to Oporto to watch a movie with my friends. There's no specific commercial area so all the shops are scattered throughout the city, making us drive a lot to buy different stuff. Worst of all, most of the elder people are still stuck with a retarded mentality from the seventies, and people in general are usually dumb. Many public areas are progressively degrading and regardless of who we elect for mayor it seems no one does anything to improve things or maybe no one even cares. Having to move to another city when I'm done with my studies is a certainty, because here it's almost impossible to get a successful job.

I'm used to this little town though, it has always been my home. I guess I will miss it when I'll move to Belgium to study in the Gent University. But hey, a movie theatre 150 metres away... what beats that?

Of course I love my home town!

Something that makes me mad is that the USA often discourages pepole to come over to Tijuana because they think it's a dangerous place. But they actually do it for pepole not to spend their money here, so they can have more money!

I know many nice pepole that live here, plus the waether is nice. I?ts close to the USA and other touristical desstinies, like Rosaito which has a lot of beautiful beaches!
