The Story Isn't Over

Archive: 23 posts

This is the best level I've ever made.

Hours upon hours of build time have gone into it, so what's in it?

- You must help a Sackgirl through a series of obstacles to get through the house you've found yourself in. The sackgirl in question has 25 different behaviors to make sure that if anything goes wrong it's the players fault.
- Around 5 minutes of gameplay.
- Very detailed scenery that changes in style as the level goes on.
- Custom music, Avril 14th by Aphex Twin (compiled by A_Morton because I'm useless with music on LBP)
- Unique and varied gameplay, hopefully this is unlike anything you've played before.
- Lots of hidden points to be found.
- Good ol' platforming without all the "pull level, watch bridge come up, walk across bridge, repeat" that seems to be so popular nowadays.
- If any of you have happened to have played one of my other levels, "A Short Story", it's a sequel to that.

I really hope you decide to play this, though I've always had highly rated levels they've never been played by that many people.

Thanks, oh and I'm willing to do F4F if you want. (:

As I went to play this I saw there were others playing it already so thought it may be fun to join them in multiplayer.
And I bumped into Mr Slurm who's level I played earlier! (Good fun too). Anyway, I digress, I believe he was a couple of minutes into the level.
And there was a thrid person who I assumed was his friend or partner.

Except I realised after a while that this was in fact the sackgirl we had to save, I honestly had no idea for several minutes, well done in your work on the AI! Had me fooled, although I'm sure that wasn't the idea. The level itself is very nice. Artistic and some nice simple puzzles to get past. All in all a splendid job, and I couldn't help but be reminded of Ico which is a magnificent game. Most enjoyable, congrats on your hard work.

I would appreciate it if you tried out my level in co-op if you get the chance, thank you for sharing.

Edit: I would usually give constructive critisism, but everything worked so well. If forced to think on it I would suggest we found it a little difficult climbing the ropes near the end. It may be worth making it a bit easier here. But it wasn't a problem after a few attempts so not crucial I'm sure.

Haha I'm really glad to hear that

On my list of things to try to improve are:
-the rope part
-the AI at the first ramp (you may have noticed the pile of boxes, they're there so she doesn't just jump down which is what she liked to do before. Basically I botched it so I'm gonna need to figure out a better way of doing it.

I've queued your level and it'll sit there till I get the chance to play it with someone else. Shouldn't be too long away.

Beautifull level, with great atmosphere, great choice of musics. I like how it's simple and nice, how the light change when you get at certain points of the level, and i loved the puzzles.

Excellent level !

I'm going to check this level out a bit later. Anyway, you said you are willing to do F4F, so here's my level: http://lbp.me/v/y4n7x02011-03-20 19:20:00

I really enjoyed this level. Gave it a "Yay" and a heart.

I like the pared-down aesthetic. Your use of colour and lighting effects make for a serene, nostalgic atmosphere. I also really liked the companion mechanic--shades of Ico. In fact, I got more than a bit of an Ico vibe throughout the level. Everything here made for a nice experience: you didn't overstay your welcome, which is nice. I'm not a big fan of overly long levels. You keep nice a focused, and leave me wanting to check out more levels of yours.

Kudos to A_Morton for the custom music. It really adds an extra dimension.

I only have two very minor nitpicks.

1. The swinging rope section was a little frustrating. Something about the spacing made it tricky. It only took a few tries, so it wasn't a deal breaker. It did mess with the flow, though.

2. At the end, when you switch from player control to sackbots as the player and the sackgirl climb the tower, there was a second or two where I could see my sackboy and his double at the same time. You might want to hide the player better at this point--just a flat wall at the very front of the level would do.

I'd like to see what you can do in the future with the companion mechanic. I think you could do some really cool stuff and have some interesting puzzles if you push your ideas with her--have her do more than the "I'll stand on this button you stand on that one" kind of thing that so many games do. Don't take that as a criticism of what you've done here. I'm encouraging you to push your ideas even further.

Played this twice now. It gets more beautiful every time!

Time for me to put my constructive critic trousers on. I feel as if some of the lighting can be a little too dark in places. Highlighting platforms during the later half of the level would really improve the flow of gameplay I think. Falling down after reaching higher up can be a little bit infuriating. Everything else is nice though, the look is clean and straight forward. I liked the stairs that flipped around!

Rated and hearted. Now to play the prequel!

Hoped you liked the song (shameless plug) it will be featured in my music shop coming soon!

@Bercilac it's okay, I'd like to push the companion thing further as well. Believe it or not though, this whole "step on buttons at the same time" thing is actually a step forward for me since my last level.

I went ahead and fixed the clone-problem as well.

@Mr_T-Shirt I highlighted the platforms too.

@Everyone: Ico and Limbo are the two games my levels seem to always be linked with, I haven't played either Been thinking of getting Ico though since I'm a bit of a Shadow of the Colossus fanboy.

Also, I'm hovering around page 3 of the cool pages which has never happened before... it's insane (: I am experiencing the fact that people who browse the cool pages are a lot more "dislike happy" though.

Okay today is big update day, the ropes will be fine tuned, the AI of the sackgirl will be improved at the first ramp will, more audio will be added (especially at the end) and there'll be a few visual tweaks here and there.2011-03-21 08:42:00

It feels so weird getting 500 plays in one day (1000 in one day if you count my other levels too). It's like I'm the abused child of LBP2 who's just been given a present thinking "Daddy loves me?"

Anyway 2 things. Thing 1) I fixed all I said I would fix in the above post with more visual improvements to be added in the next day or two.
Thing 2) Only about half the people who I did f4f with have actually come through on their side of the deal, which is annoying. I really need feedback to make the next level (which if the ideas I have for it work, will be an absolute mind *****) as good as possible.

Im adding you to the list of my fav creators, idk but thers something about this whole story so subliminally beautiful...idk its like sad in a way. Im curious to see where your gonna go with this.

Anyway, great level, great lighting and Unique puzzle/platforming section, though I only recomend one thing, be careful with using the same platforming to many times, I notice the rope thing was also in the first one some people would see it as a bad thing while others wont, try to be really diversive like when making platforming section, but thats just a tip, cause not everyone thinks the same of course, but just saying.

Great sackbot design, and wow Im just speechless about everything else, Great music more than anything, it made the level shine very well.
Im anxious to see where your gonna take this, great job

For sure a superb level! It has beautiful graphics and a good use of pulleys and such to spin the world and make your way through to the climax, a wonderful sunset!

But it became orange too early in the platforming stage and I couldn't see very well... and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to help that girl get up also or just leave her (as we had been helping each other before).

Overall it was awesome and I will definitely keep my eye open for your stuff later!

If you F4F, check out my sig -- thanks!

Yeh I didn't want to reuse the rope section, but I wanted something that would make people who'd played the first one think "oh, cool, I remember that"

Part 3... I haven't even started making it yet. But so far in my head it's half level/ half movie. The Player will be voice acted (by me), the girl will not. She'll also not be with you for a lot of the level but be off doing her own thing (which will probably turn out to be a nice spin-off level). It will be to do with dreams and madness, but that's all I'm going to tell you

heres the feedback. I like the silhouettish steam(wood?)punk atmosphere. the jumping on some of the platforms where hard because of the camera angle and how it sort of shaded in with the planks in the background, but it was a pretty relaxing level.2011-03-24 00:16:00

Thanks for the feedback of "Cybernetic Adventures Beta". That was an interesting level.

VISUALS:
The level has nice variation of the visuals as the lighting changes. Good silhouette visuals at the end. I think you should add some more stickers and decorations to give this level more visuals.

SOUND:
Great music choices and custom music. The custom music has a nifty piano sound.

GAMEPLAY:
Good platforming puzzles that can have you and a girl sackbot solve. The obstacles are really clever, too.

OVERALL:
Solid fun and visuals. A yeah vote and a positive review.

Sorry if I took a while getting to the f4f. I blame it on work and global warming... So.. Let's get to it.

I've never played the first one, but I don't get out much. I loved the seamless transitions between cutscenes and gameplay. Also, the lighting is fantastic. The lighting was probably my favorite part, actually. Not enough creators play around with it. (Especially in a stylized way) Like mentioned above, the level reminded me a bit of ICO (which is cool). I liked the staggered sponges to climb. It's a simple gameplay element I haven't seen before.

I enjoyed the level, and don't really have any complaints. I thought it was kind of short (but it seems the majority of the community prefers short levels). I'd suggest in future installments doing more with the silhouette lighting seen in the latter part of the level.

'Kay thanks guys. I've finished editing this level now as I don't think there's anything else that really needs to change or that I can change without putting in as much effort as it took to make it in the first place

The sequel to this is "in developement". But at the moment it's a bunch of assorted ideas with nothing yet to pull it together so I don't know how it'll turn out. While I wait for more ideas for that though, I've got a pretty short survival thingy in the works using the music from this level..
