Why no sticker switches?

Archive: 32 posts

I got LBP at the weekend and I've been playing story level, doing the tutorials and fighting with the search engine to find good user created levels (getting names of levels and PSN usernames from this forum) and there's something I've noticed. The story levels use a lot of sticker switches but the user created levels don't seem to use them that much at all and I was wondering why. Do people not find them interesting or is it because making your own stickers is a pain? Or could it be that, because of the profile size limit, people don't like picking things up just to complete a level?

I'm curious as I've been playing around with ideas for puzzles etc. and so I'm interested to know more about the lack of sticker switches and whether I should avoid using them

Oh and hello to you all as well

You don't have to make your own stickers.2008-11-28 09:55:00

Oh I know, but (speaking personally) if I was going to use sticker switches in one of my levels I'd want them to be original stickers, rather than using the built in stickers. I'm wondering if other people feel this way as well. Overall though I'm just curious why I haven't seen many sticker switches in user created levels though.2008-11-28 09:58:00

Most people would use stickers already in the game. One problem with sticker switches is that not everybody has the same stickers.2008-11-28 10:00:00

Yes, which is why making stickers that you collect on the level would be the way to go, I guess. Otherwise you're right, people might simply not have the sticker yet.2008-11-28 10:02:00

It also ruins the sense of being in a volcano, or in a frozen cavern (just examples) because of placing stickers. Kinda like breaking the fourth wall.2008-11-28 10:03:00

That's an interesting point, but don't giant talking wobble-headed automatons break that as well? I guess it really depends on the atmosphere you're going for. I can't say that I particularly felt that placing stickers in the story levels really ruined the sense of atmosphere but I can see that maybe others would feel the opposite of that.2008-11-28 10:08:00

Yes, I find them strangely satisfying as well I really wish we could upload our own images, I've got lots of my own work that would make neat stickers. I'm currently re-creating some of my things in a sandbox on my moon for background to an eventual level, but being able to upload images (with transparency, which seems to be the big problem with making your own stickers by building and taking a photo of the build) would be great.2008-11-28 10:34:00

You can take pictures of images with A PS Eye, or an Eyetoy, but it would be cool to be able to import images off your HDD. I'm so glad I kept my Eyetoy... I has unique stickerz! :hero:2008-11-28 10:37:00

Doesn't get around the transparency problem, however, and I don't know how good the Eyetoy is, but it's presumably not crystal clear quality?

Yeah, alot of people haven't unlocked them from story mode. It would work if you had to use a sticker that was taken in the same level your playing like ConfusedCartmans PhotoBooth level

can you set stickers from the story mode as prizes in your levels? if you can then you put the sticker you want from the story mode in a prize bubble at the beginning of the level in a clear and easy to get spot. Then everyone will have the sticker to use on your sticker switch whether they had collected in story mode or not.
as i write on my doubt becomes larger.

You can't. The usual requirement for sticker switches is to make a sticker, hide it somewhere, and have a sticker switch set to that sticker. Or set the sticker switch to accept any sticker.

If you're using story mode stickers, it's only fair to make them on an optional path.

I actually put a couple to use finally (one's on a "rebus" puzzle and one's the last half of a riddle - in an "evil" location).. it was just a case of finding a spot to use them that just made sense.

I think that's the big problem with sticker switches. Most of them appear to be designed as "Graffiti" type stickers, so if you don't have a spot where they seem to fit 100%, they just don't seem to get used.

I was under the assumption you COULD use storyline stickers as prize bubbles for your own levels? (I'd really hate the idea that I'm going to have to change some stickers around that I used.)

I really think stickers should be used quite often as long as it doesn't ruin the atmosphere of the level. I plan to use sticker switches for extra hidden prize bubble goodies 2008-11-29 04:41:00

True but the shapes are limited and that doesn't appeal to everyone.

I really hope the image importing becomes a reality but I'm also extremely bitter by the kinds of trash I've seen online. Giving those types of creators image importing would be a disaster. There are already morons running around with pornographic images captured with the pseye. I also heard about some insane things going on in the Home beta. I just have to stop and wonder about people...

You cant put story stickers in prize bubbles. I am using the cow sticker in a level that takes you back to the canyons to beat zapata again. HE IS BACK!!
It's annoying having to cut around the sticker though.

I don't use them much because you never know when someone who just got the game and barely has any stickers wants to play your level, and then they can't go on. Maybe for earning prize bubbles it would be fair, though.2008-11-29 13:32:00

Puzzles switches are a niche really, while things like grab switches are useful, sticker switches are just an added bonus. To have them in your levels you would also have to be dedicated, as in most cases you would have to make your own stickers, and wait for the import tool to arrie.

I actually used a total of 8 sticker switches in my first level. I used ones I made (or borrowed by sticking them and taking a photo) and used them as necessary and realistic parts of the story. The problem I had was that the first grouping of six sticker switches which were leaves to place on a dying tree and bring it to life to open the next area only seemed to work for me on my system. No one else could finish my level that I'd spent like thirty hours on and because they always worked when I played it I had no way to fix them. So I probably won't use stickers at least not as essential elements that need to be done to progress since they can be glitchy. Its sad I really like sticker switches. My level waits for the day the problem is patched (hopefully).2008-12-02 00:15:00

I put a sticker switch in my level with the sticker I wanted, but didn't attach it to anything. This way, that sticker shows up in the 'switch triggers' list. Then I made a cardboard cutout that is the same shape as that sticker, but I applied a switch that works when you put ANY sticker on it instead.

If you only use them for secrets and bonus items/areas like the story levels, I think you can just set them up normally and not worry about players having the sticker or not. If you're using a sticker for a required action, though, I think this is the way to go.

Question....
Would it be possible to have a photo booth, and you need to use the picture from that as the to activate a swich???
In my upcoming level, Im planning to have a picture, stuff it in a prize bubble, and let players slap it on the Swich.

I personally don't use sticker switches. I don't think to use 'em. If I was smart I would integrate them into my levels but I'm too dumb.2008-12-03 21:31:00
