Screen burn-in

Archive: 28 posts

It's 3am and I've just finished a 5 hour create session and I've now got a permanent pause mark burnt into the top left of my screen. Is there a way to hide this like I can hide the thermo?
If not, then please MM, give me a way to turn it off!!!!!!!!! I can't afford a new telly!

5 hours? Seriously? I encourage somewhat long create sessions, but you also have to create responsibly. :eek:2011-03-20 04:29:00

I'm not sure if this works, but try toggling the option in the start menu for 'Display HUD" (or something similar). I think that may get rid of the icon (along with everything else).2011-03-20 05:35:00

Thanks STTAGG but it only hides the thermo.
I'm pretty sure the burn's built up over time as I've been creating since LBP1 came out, so I'm not so sure it's down to my 5 hour session. This should be addressed as I'm sure there are others it's happened to. I know that burn in only tends to affect plasma TVs but there must be a lot of people who play LBP on their plasmas. And I can't not play it now, especially as I'm nearing the end of my first LBP2 creation.
My partner is banning me from playing it as the pause mark is now visible no matter what we watch. Aaaaargh! What can I do?

Post a complaint in the getsatisfaction website. They tend to observe things that get posted there quite frequently.2011-03-20 19:57:00

Only happens with older/cheaper plasma screens, or CRTs (to a lesser extent) - LCD/TFT-based screens are unaffected. This was one of the reasons I avoided plasma screens like the plague.

That man Ungreth up there ^ lives in create mode!

It is only plasma TVs that get screen burn, better quality picture I hear but that's the big problem with them.

I haven't got much of a solution but I have a suggestion that might help -

Turn down the brightness on the tv - you can probably counteract this by having the light up on the level while working on it, if im right in thinking that the pause symbol is unaffected by the level settings... Just a thought.

I feel your pain, I'm really paranoid about screen burn!

Set the tv to zoom and shift the picture up.

maybe also adjust the the lbp display size to push it out

Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like the only thing I can do is to turn the brightness right down. Not sure it'll do much as the pause mark is permanently visible already but I'm sure a little damage limitation might help.2011-03-20 23:58:00

I think Rabid-Coots suggestion is spot on, if you make your screen size bigger than your tv in the settings you should be able to push it off screen...?2011-03-21 13:43:00

Tell that to my old 32" LCD TV that had a thermometer burned into it.

Also, 8 hour create sessions are weak. Try consecutive 12 hour days... frequently. My TV hates me.

Well LCD is not active screen and don't generate any light alone so it so need backlight to see anything. it's very hard to burn-in anything on them

I tried Rabid-Coots suggestion and have managed to move the pause mark to a slightly different position. Thanks for that.
I just hope I don't end up with a second burn.

After checking it seems that LCDs can suffer from a similar condition, although it's different from a physics POV. Read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_burn-in).

You can theoretically correct the burn-in by displaying the negative image of that which was burned in to your screen, for a period of time comparable to that which it took to burn it in.

That's how much he's on creatre... o_o
(Even tho he's constantly offline, hmm...

Anywho, @OP:
You could alway, Idk, take a break every now and then? xD
Lowering the brightness also helps a lot.
Unpausing to test the level every now and then should prevent it from burning in as easly too.
(I mean, who creates 5hours without even testing, unless it was merely visuals they were working on? )
Um...the screen zoom may help, but it may get really annoying too, as a lot of stuff will also be offscreen when you're supposed to see it, so if you play online levels or with friends a lot, I wouldn't really reccomend this method.

Hope that helps!

Just have a break every hour or when you go to the toilet either switch the TV off or change the channel so that a different image is being displayed and then switch back when your finished. Having regular breaks in Create Mode is probably more practical than fiddling with screen size/position.2011-03-22 00:58:00

12 hour days?.. lightweight! I spend 25 and a half hours a day in create, without food, water or air. and when i'm done i destroy all the work i've made as it doesn't meet my exacting standards... even when it does!...

So, a couple of years should do it?

I get burn-in on my LCD. If it gets really bad displaying an all white image for an hour or so will get rid of it, at least on my TV.

But, as suggested, do not play one game for that long. Switch it up a bit.

Me and many others like me. I've been playing LBP almost every day since it came out. 5 hours isn't really that long in create mode. If you asked around I'm sure you'll find a plethora of people who spend days at a time creating.
I admit I'm an LBP junkie, and can't get enough of it.

This should only happen on plasma tv screens. I've not had this problem on our LCD screen and I've done longer then 5 hours in create on pause.

What you need to do is leave the screen on a channel thats not broadcasting and is blank- white or black screen, or a channel where there's lots of interference black and white scrambled pixels to re-distribute the gases/pixels around the screen. This is what I used to do on one of our plasma screens and it works.

Do you think this'll get rid of the burn mark?

It should do if you're on a plasma screen and leave it on for at least a few hours to shift the burn and have a check in between or even over night. Had a bad burn in from other games like Gears of War 1-2 and Borderlands. The Pioneer plasma screen gets burn from channel icons and logos at times. Whereas the Samsung LCD doesn't so we stopped using the plasma tv for games (still an excellent screen). I try to have breaks when Im on the LCD just in case as I have been in create 8-12 hours without problems. I know others have used a white or black image to correct it in previous posts. One of the reasons why we've avoided plasmas where I am now.2011-03-25 00:24:00

I've got a Panasonic plasma and it's got a fantastic picture. This burn in thing's got me a bit worried though, as everytime I'm playing a game I'm worried something's gonna mark the screen. This pause mark is the only one that's visible no matter what's on screen. It's not obvious at all, and other people say the can't see it, but I notice it all the time. I'll try leaving a white image onscreen overnight and see if that does the trick.

Let me know how it turns out. Me and my partner are both into games and know about screen burn particularly if you're having long gaming sessions with HUD displays and various gameplay elements on constant display. I'm thinking that Media Molecule should have an option where the pause icon can be dimmed or only flashes up momentarily know and again to remind you and to minimise any screen burn. May be worth letting them know this.2011-03-25 11:04:00

Cheers again LittleBigDes but unfortunately it didn't work. I left the TV on a white screen for 9 hours and the mark is still visible.
It must be long term damage that I've missed until now.
I tried to send a message to MM but there seems no way to contact them. I tried the website but can find no e-mail address. I just hope that they read this.

That's a shame. MM have a get satisfaction link somewhere either on their site or the LBP site.

You may want to recalibrate your colour set-up and go into your contrast settings again. Also the temperature of the tv may affect it, make sure your tv/room is no more then 25 degrees and dim the lights in your room. I do know that you can get dvds and utilities/applications that reduce screen burn in, sometimes referred to Temporary Image Retention (TIR for short). I did a google search and a few names came up:

Pixel Protector
Ovation Multimedia’s Avia
JscreenFix

But do your research before using anything that can affect your screen, you may even want to check the manual or call the company for advice. I read somewhere that the JscreenFix wears down your tv.
If your plasma came with a set-up dvd or screen calibration dvd then use that to see if anything else is on the dvd to help. It may have a something on there to re-calibrate, images and test programs.

Also there may be optimum settings for your colour set-up on avforums: http://www.avforums.com/. We did this for our Samsung LCDs. You can search by your make and series number to find the best settings. It improved our picture quality.
