How do you make melee combos?

| I've seen many levels that have a system that lets you push a button in rapid succession and perform a combo of melee attacks. If you stop pushing the button, then the combo will start over the next time you push the button. I've experimented with various counters and timers, and I almost made a working melee combo, but then it got too confusing and didn't always work.
