Bizarre level link bug
Archive: 12 posts
Ok, so I have a few beta levels imported to my moon for reference, just in case I want to remake them at some point. I have just entered play mode in a beta level saved to my moon, and triggered the level link that would normally have taken me to part 2 in the beta. However, neither part of the level has ever been published to the servers in LBP2, so I expected the link to be dead, not working. Instead I was sent to a level called Hill 30 by Digbychickencesar. I have no idea who this person is or how my level became linked to theirs, but when I entered part 1 of my level in create mode to check the level link icon, I noticed that the original badge I had placed there had somehow been replaced by the badge for Hill 30 I mean, what the funk!? How did that happen? | 2011-03-19 15:21:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
If this is the case, I suspect level links are unique generated id tags to your level. i.e a random code assigned by the servers and also used by LBP.me. Now that LBP2 is live, that same code was generated in the real game again and now belongs to another level. | 2011-03-19 15:27:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
It's very simple to explain and its quite natural behavior every level got it number id (lbp.me it transform in to string of letters like y0tb6f( this id is used to refer our level in link so game know where to send you. Thing is there is level in ratail with same id as your level in beta, so it send you there ;] pffff... sniped | 2011-03-19 15:32:00 Author: Shadowriver Posts: 3991 |
Ok, thanks jww and Shadowriver. That kinda makes sense now. It really freaked me out when it happened though. | 2011-03-19 15:39:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |
Most welcome! I suspect if that id had not been used, it would simply crash or give a wacky error and send you to the pod. In your case, you get a free ride to some other level. lol | 2011-03-19 15:52:00 Author: jwwphotos Posts: 11383 |
Hey - since we are talking about Level Link issues - I have a BIG one. On my level, Jumper, every single time you go through the level link - it separates the players. If you're playing with a random person, that's it, you'll never see them again. Obviously, friends can rejoin their buddy's by re-joining them. I don't know how to fix this. Some people have guess that the thermo is high (about 2-3 bars down from the top) and that the thermo is taking people's costumes into account - and separating them to keep the thermo from going too high. Which sounds plausible - but you can join your friend once they've spawned. Any ideas? | 2011-03-19 15:52:00 Author: CYMBOL Posts: 1230 |
Most likely is thermo or connection, it not only happens with links sometimes it happens by normally loading levels | 2011-03-19 16:03:00 Author: Shadowriver Posts: 3991 |
That's weird. I never tried linking in the beta so I don't know much about it. On a slightly related note. Digbychickencesar is the best username I've ever seen. It's the name of a character from a Mitchell and Webb look sketch. One of my favourite sketches ever. | 2011-03-19 16:15:00 Author: KQuinn94Z Posts: 1758 |

For some reason, players themselves seem to take up thermo, and if your thermo is high then other players often can't join. Almost certainly a bug. I've got the same issue right now with Space Assassins 2 which uses a level link. Friends helping me playtest it get thrown out every time the link gets triggered. The best plan is to emit and destroy sections as the player progresses through your level, so there's always plenty of free thermo in the memory. You can potentially have enough stuff in your level to take up a full thermometer, but if most of it is nested in emitters and you are destroying sections once players pass a "no return" point, then the thermo will easily be tricked into believing that it's only half full. | 2011-03-19 17:59:00 Author: Ungreth Posts: 2130 |

It shows a blank level with a lock on it and when you activate it nothing happens. | 2011-03-19 20:13:00 Author: Doopz Posts: 5592 |
The level link just doesn't work. It shows a blank level with a lock on it and when you activate it nothing happens. I once (more than once actually) came across that, but when I restarted the level, it was working as usual. I think level links in general are rather buggy. :/ | 2011-03-20 04:47:00 Author: midnight_heist Posts: 2513 |
