Microchips Question.

Archive: 9 posts

I fairly new to LBP create mode. I didn't try it on the first game, but I'm having a blast on this game, seing what I can actually come up with, with the logic. I've refraimed from putting all of my logic onto microchips, because they're easier to access when they're just plonked where I want them to be, though it does tend to look a bit chaotic.
My question is: Does putting logic onto Microchips actually free up some thermometer space?

Thanks.

I don't think so. It's just a tool to save up space and help you keep things fairly more organized than before Notice though, if you're going to use lots of microchips and are new to them, that they have an Input too, like most tools, allowing you to turn the microchip/entire logic inside of it on and off at will.2011-03-19 13:24:00

As i heard microchip takes some thermo, but it's not noticeable amount if you have only few of them, but thermo taken by stuff inside is not diffent2011-03-19 13:33:00

Thanks for the quick response. A good way to get a noobie's confidence up I've been on this site for a couple of weeks now, but up to now, the search function has sufficed for my queries.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. I'm sure I could put that to use..... I may have been over complicating my logic thus far. I'd be able to show you some logic that I created, to see if I could have made it simpler, it'd be a good way for me to learn. I'd have to get the pictures off my HDD first though.... to make it simpler to explain. Even so, I'm quite proud of myself for working it all out.

Well, if you don't use microchips at all then you will lose thermo space - objects on world geometry each have their own positions and meshes etc. that contribute to the thermo. Once you put them inot a microchip and close it down, you save some thermo. Having nested Microchips (microchips inside microchips) will ever so slightly increase your thermo overall, but TBH, the organizational benefits outweigh this.

On the subject of switching microchips on and off, I don't believe this actually affects your thermo, but it does affect performance. The elements inside a closed microchip will not be processed, which reduces the chances of your level being laggy both locally, and over the network, so it's worth switching off anything that is not in use.

Hmmm, what about cases where you have around 200 microchips inside a single microchip? Nothing has gone 'wrong' yet, but is this adding to the thermo by much?2011-03-19 19:24:00

Yeah, you definitely want to start using microchips for a few reasons.

Say you create a super awesome crazy fun car mover; if all of the logic is just on the car, it's very hard to make new ones for your race level. If it is on a chip, you can just put that chip onto anything you design.

If you get halfway through a level and want to redesign a few things, it is much easier to just move a chip out of the way and do your redesign, then move it back.

Like rtm said, there's also thermo and organizational uses.

Plus when you use chips it forces your elements into nice neat grid layouts, making them tons easier to follow and group.

I put some of the logic for one of the more complicated things on my level into microchips. It looks a lot neater.... but it's impossible to tell whether there has been any real thermo reduction. But I'll take your word for it, and I'll keep on using microchips.2011-03-19 21:39:00

I have a massive amount of logic on a single chip for a Metroidvania-style Sackbot. Closing its microchip removes nearly 1/3 a tick of thermo versus leaving it open, so yes, chips definitely save thermo. 2011-03-20 07:15:00
