Mover & Advanced Mover Won't Work Together?

Archive: 8 posts

Hi,

I'm trying to make a gravity-flipping vehicle ? like the Segway-thing in "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Negativitron."

I have the L Stick hooked up to an Advanced Mover for left and right movement, and I had wanted to make X toggle between two Movers, one going up and one going down, but as the title says, it doesn't work. If they both try to move at once, the vehicle (currently just a box) doesn't move.

Is there something I'm doing wrong? Because I'm pretty sure I've seen others use the two types of movers together on one object. If there's no fix for that, does anyone have any other ideas (I don't want it to flip 180 degrees by toggling gyroscopes)?

Thanks a bunch.

You sure you set up force of movers right and added anti-gravity tweaker on 100%? keep in mind that those movers need to fight with original gravity you don't disable it with anti-gravity tweaker2011-03-19 06:20:00

If two movers (or rotators) on an object are active at the same time, their values for speed and strength will decide what movement results. A mover with 0 speed on one axis and 100% strength will usually effectively block the force from any other mover on the same object and the same axis.

If you can, make sure only one mover is active at a time. If that isn't possible, you may have to combine your inputs to feed only one mover.

Your vehicle has two states that should exclude one another: normal gravity and inverted gravity. The selector is the tool for the job. Set up a two-gate selector and stick a separate microchip to each selector output. Put your movers and gravity tweakers on each corresponding chip. Then you can hook up a control from a controlinator to the cycle input of the selector (or whatever method you are using to toggle gravity).2011-03-19 11:08:00

Generally, if you want multiple movers / rotators to work together / against each other in any kind of sensible manner, setting their deceleration to zero is the best way.2011-03-19 16:17:00

The issue may be that at the moment your vehicle is just a box. When you try to move left and right is your box resting against the ground or ceiling? I found out that when you try something like this the friction between the moving object and surface it's pushing against is too strong for your left and right movement to overcome - so it just stays put, even though you can see it light up on the circuit board meaning it has received the command. Try adding wheels to see if that helps, or any other way you can think of to reduce friction.

Of course this also depends on materials used, when I came across the problem, I had glass trying to move against glass, which I'd guess produces a massive amount of friction.

Just use one advanced mover. It has multiple inputs. You can hook up the left stick to the left and right speed and then hook whatever else to the up and down speed. Say we set a x button up to a toggle and the toggle up to the up and down speedevery time you hit x it will switch between up and down and you will still be able to move left and right. But the gyroscope upside down is a good idea. You will still need to use it to have the vehicle "driving" on the ceiling2011-03-19 16:54:00

Turns out when I changed the acceleration force of the movers to 100% they were perfectly fine operating at the same time as the Advanced Mover. Thanks, Shadowriver, for prompting me to experiment with that. It seems kind of obvious now.

Xaif, I installed a Material Tweaker with Friction set to 0% and that helped, too. And it's actually going to stay as a box because the only part the player will see is holographic sprites in the thin layer in front of it.

Kitkasumass, I had no idea I could do that! For some reason I had assumed connecting a Toggle to an Advanced Mover would just switch between off / + instead of - / +. The only reason I won't implement that is that I want the up/down movement to be quicker than the left/right.

Thanks, everyone, for the responses!
