Releasing Beta version of my level; feedback welcome

Archive: 32 posts

Okay guys, I need your help! I'm finishing my current level and could use your advice and feedback. I published the Beta version of the level and you'll be treated to a small "password screen" (thanks Gilgamesh! I think I stole this from you ;D credit to you!) upon entering.

I only need about a handful of you, so post here if you are willing to help out or send me a PM, however you like. I'll give you the password through a PM.

I can't promise I'll be able to change or adjust everything you guys tell me, but I really appreciate the constructive criticism, whether it be for this level or upcoming ones.

Also, thanks to all my friends that have tested it before. :] More than welcome to try it again.

Haha, thanks for the credits. I actually considered giving away my password contraption as a prize since it's easy to use and tweak.

And I'll try out your beta. I'm the kind of tester that likes to go where they're not supposed to and try things that seem unexpected

I also like to think that I give clear, useful and constructive criticism.

Thanks guys. Please note it is still incomplete. Missing around 2-3 rooms and I gotta add some visual enhancements. Hopefully I'll be done by next week.2008-11-27 21:51:00

As long as it's constructive, not just "oh wow this sucks!" and stuff, then sure,

Alright, I will later tonight.

Ermmm...

Nah, I give constructive criticism. I learned to do it a lot when I used to sprite. (Not important...)

Well, I must say the level so far is very solid, and the visual look is amazingly well done.

Me and my gf were very impressed with the 2X challenge. We also did the 4X challenge even though we only have 3 controllers and 2 players

I'd like to sound more critical, but quite honestly I could not find any glaring faults, and none of the challenges were too tough or too redundant. Even those couple of hidden death traps were actually tasteful in their execution, making you feel that you've been had without being too annoying.

So I suppose the best thing I can say is : whatever you're doing, you're doing it right. Keep up with the kind of solid design you've been making and it will be an epic level

Thanks, Gilgamesh. I'm glad it doesn't look that bad visually. I still have to make it look better, because honestly, it bores me... It's so dull, having just light and dark browns, so I have to spice it up adding decorations here and there.2008-11-28 03:10:00

I assumed you would be polishing up with more decorations, prize and point bubbles once the level was completely laid out, so I didn't pay too much attention to the lack thereof.

I would suggest that you add a few of the bone and skull decorations near some of the traps and challenges (without overdoing it). This would give the impression that other people have ventured there before and failed to make it through. Obviously these would be closer to the entrance, as fewer people would make it deeper in.

Just an idea you could use

Alright, I have enough testers now. Until the next round or until it's released. Thanks, everyone! I really, REALLY appreciate it.

Also, I'm well aware of the room with the rolling wheels. It needs adjusting as jumping oftentimes sends you to the backplanes, thus, messing everything up. Sorry about that!

Also also, Gilgamesh, you were able to do the 4p challenge with just 3 controllers/players? How was it bypassed?

Alright, just played your level, and unfortunately, I didn't get to finish. It's possible I may have been doing this part wrong, but perhaps you could help me out here. I lost at the part with the rolling circles, the ones that came from the sun's energy above the scarab, or something like that. I tried doing it by jumping on top of the circles and attampting to balance myself until I got to the other side. Was I doing this wrong? Because I found it to be incredibly hard.2008-11-28 04:26:00

It is incredibly hard... Too hard. I need to figure out a way to fix that up. Sorry about that, Clank. Thank you for giving it a try, however. The finalized version of that room will be (hopefully!) easier.2008-11-28 04:29:00

Also, that one skull pharoah floating head dude. The second time you see him, the camera doesn't show all of his head. You can see like, the mouth and down,2008-11-28 04:32:00

Odd. Do you mean when he actually speaks, or do you mean the "Camera Zone"? Because the Magic Mouth placed on him is supposed to zoom in when he speaks.

Hmm. I can't recall. :o I think it was probably the camera zone.

Also, another thing. Were there parts where you had or wanted to have lava?

Are you asking if I forgot to put Fire Danger Tool on objects, or are you asking if I wanted the Fire Danger Tool to look like lava?

Yes, the later. Were there times when you wanted something to look like lava?

Hmmm... No... Actually, I haven't even thought about it. I only saw it as Fire Danger Tool (lol). Does it look like lava? o_O If so, cool! If not, then okay, didn't intend to anyway. Haha.

If you want to incorporate parts with lava, I could show you my design.

For example, perhaps that part with the traveling platform? I'm not in any way forcing you to do so, just if you're interested.

I'm not sure if I would add "lava", but I certainly wouldn't mind seeing what you're talking about. Curious now.

I'm playing your level again. Just got past the rolling circles! Yay!

Okay, I can confirm. The camera does NOT show the entire head of the skull pharoah floating head dude the second time.

Just finished your level, and it was great. Didn't see any problems except for the floating head guy the second time. His magic mouth doesn't zoom in, because it isn't set to be a cutscene. Very minor thing. I do have a suggestion, though. You may want to use the cow glitch on the dissolving material that dissolves into a slide at the end of the level, so you can avoid the player being suspicious.2008-11-28 05:59:00

I wasn't aware his magic mouth didn't have a cutscene. x_X Even after playing it over and over. Silly me... Thanks.

And, I'm not sure what you mean about that last part. Player being suspicious about what? Sorry, lost me there.

To avoid the player being suspicious of something happening. At the part I'm talking about, you've got the gold floor, which suddenly changed to a different material and set me off to something being amiss. A bit later, the floor dissolved, and I went straight down the slide into a spike wall. What I'm suggesting is that you use the cow glitch to give the dissolve material the same appearance as the gold floor from before.2008-11-28 22:06:00

Hmm, so to do that glitch... I first use the stone material (the one seen all over the stage), lethalize into gas, change the material to dissolve, then unlethalize?

EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. Thanks, it looks a lot better now.
