Story Arc levels?

Archive: 1 post

Okay, so in the last few weeks I've been brainstorming level concepts for LBP2 based on ideas in LBP1 that never saw full fruition due to limitations in both the game and my own personal time during those few years. I came up with the idea for two series of levels with indivudual storie arcs behind them though loosely connected in terms of behind-the-scenes influencers.

Without spoiling too much, the first series (tentatively called "The Primeval Beasts Saga") consists of levels that take place in four seperate locations spread across nine levels, one for one location, three for two of them, and two for the finale. 3 of the locations can be accessed independantly of one another but completing each grants players one of three stickers. Using all three allows the unlocking of a "gate" of the 4th and final location and levels which serves as the climax of the story arc. The story itself isn't really anything too deep or complicated but gameplay wise, this series is intended to serve as a serious challenge to the player's problem-solving skills and resourcefulness.

The second series (tentatively called "The Syndicate Saga"), chronolocially taking place after the first, will have foreshadowing to the sort of developments that occurs within it's own story arc that appear in other levels that I will release beforehand which will be followed up by six level that make up the series. The overarcing story of these levels involves a shadowy organization that intends to spread it's influence across the dreamscape and their small cameos in other levels serves as the precursor to when they finally start operating out in the open, which is the series of levels in which the player has to systematically take them down one by one. Compared to the first series, this one will serve as a sort of tie-in/follow-up to both the story of LBP2 as well as all the other levels I would release that came before them. In terms of gameplay, they will also be a call-back to the gameplay and levels found in the main story level of the game but wildly reimagined as to be familiar but require players to reinvent their tactics.

While I have a pretty good idea of what I want in each level, I'm a bit hesitant to undertake them not only because of the sheer amount of time that I'll need to invest but also because I'm actually not sure the player base as a whole will care much for it compared to more concise, stand-alone levels. That, combined with the challenge these levels intend to present leaves me questioning how receptive players will be to it. I'm wondering if people here think it's something I should go forward with these levels and if it's really that important to make said levels knitted together as I planned. Individually, I know the locations of the first arc can potentially stand alone on their own and I'm wondering how important it is to include a fourth as a clincher. And in regards to the second, I'm wondering if I should delve that heavily into continuity within all my levels. Any thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.
