Non-Slippery Glass

Archive: 7 posts

The material tweaker should be able to make glass non-slippery. Currently the friction option has no effect -- at 100% sackboy still slides around like crazy.

I realize they can't change the default at this point, but why is glass slippery in the first place? Glass is actually not slippery in real life. It acts like ice in the game.

lol you make a good point, however you can find glitched versions of glass that isn't slippery.2011-03-17 21:24:00

Probably because Sackboy is made of cloth, and so cloth can't grip on glass. The option to tweak glass friction would be nice though. I didn't know the material tweaker doesn't work on it until now.

Well you can do slippery gum so i don't see the issue ;]

Well they needed a material to be slippery, and glass was the best one for that purpose. Still wish that you could tweak its friction. (maybe up to 200%) I have using waterfall material to make small rivers and then slipping all over it.2011-03-19 20:41:00

The material tweaker did give glass 100% friction in early version of the beta but it changed about half way through. Not sure if it was intended. It may still be a bug. Like someone else said, use a glitched version if you can. Aya made an awesome selection of glitched materials in LBP1, I think you can still grab em out of Garden of Goodies.2011-03-19 21:20:00

Most of them still work in LBP2.

Another way to vary the physics of a material is to embed an invisible material (which has physics, but no graphics) into a dead material (which has graphics but no physics)...

There's also other places where it might be useful, say in a rocky/cavernous section, you can embed a smoother version of the rockyness inside the walkthru material so that a sackperson can just walk over the rockier parts without jumping.

And say if you want a single piece of material which has different properties in different places, maybe you want a slope to be slippery, but the rest not to be, you can use emded different materials inside different parts of the same piece.

The demo I did actually used thack, but in retrospect, invisible material would probably be better, then the bounds of the collision-detection area can be closer to (or even outside) the bounds of the visible material, without allowing the embedded material to show through.

Also, since the cow glitch doesn't work with non-story materials, it's the only way to produce something like a slippery MGS material, i.e. by embedding invisible glass inside a walkthru MGS material.
...which also means you can use this method with materials which only exist in LBP2.
