Eric the half-a-bee (yet another philosophy thread)

Archive: 7 posts

Alright, so I happened to come over this rather interesting song by Monty Python (though excuse me if it has been posted before), but I just thought I would post it here as it does explain about existence in a rather amusing way... You shall understand when you hear it!

If you have trouble catching up the lyrics:

A one... two-- A one... two... three... four...
Half a bee, philosophically,
Must, ipso facto, half not be.
But half the bee has got to be
Vis a vis, its entity. D'you see?

But can a bee be said to be
Or not to be an entire bee
When half the bee is not a bee
Due to some ancient injury?

Singing...

La dee dee, one two three,
Eric the half a bee.
A B C D E F G,
Eric the half a bee.

Is this wretched demi-bee,
Half-asleep upon my knee,
Some freak from a menagerie?
No! It's Eric the half a bee!

Fiddle de dum, Fiddle de dee,
Eric the half a bee.
Ho ho ho, tee hee hee,
Eric the half a bee.

I love this hive, employee-ee,
Bisected accidentally,
One summer afternoon by me,
I love him carnally.

He loves him carnally,
Semi-carnally.
The end.

Cyril Connelly?
No; semi-carnally!
Oh.

Cyril Connelly.

Umm... Discuss!

I am not allowed to post in any "Monty Python Threads" anymore... not since....

The Incident.

*edit
The Pythons were just as much philosophers as comedians. Although Eric the Half a Bee isnt the best example. Actually quite a few philosophers disguise their sometimes radical thoughts as comedy.

Indeed, I have watched episodes only to play back the scene so I can understand what is going on XD

I think what it's saying is that nothing is unless it is. That, or they know a saint bee sent here to save his people. But alas, he has been cut in half.

You know Moonwire, people usually give their own theories before others. You know, to start the conversation.

I can't help but think of bees having tragic shaving accidents now...

Speaking of which, what do you think a shaved bee looks like? By guess is embarrassed. And maybe a little coy.

I really want to shave a bee now

I know, but I don't want to be the first to misinterpret it either D: Anyway, better get to the case... I have never really been fond of philosophy, I have encountered the occasional wise sayings, yet others seem a bit more not-so-thought-through... As a supporter of reason (mostly, except for when I want to not make sense) I have no better way to illustrate it with this SMBC comic:

http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=1879#comic (it won't show as a normal picture)

How half a bee can be only half be because for some reason it was only to be half a bee by some ancient injury (looks like I am affected, you see)? Wether someone loses an arm they are not worth an arm less, they are still a human. "But half the bee has got to be, vis a vis, its entity" I agree more with because that is what i go by, even if it contained more bee-matter when it was whole a bee.

Ugh, I just hope I didn't miss the point.

If you are talking about Monty Python - and Philosophers, then you have to mention the Philosophers song
