Methods to lower down the thermo?

Archive: 6 posts

I've been working on a few levels and I circle around them when I create.

I was working on my first level of the "Abstract" series, (been a while since I worked on it) and the thermo shot up tremendously. The level isn't even half-way done and I can't put much more in it.

I've tried Ali's way of reducing the thermo, by changing the material of everything to basic cardboard, but to no avail.

Does anyone know other ways to reduce the thermo?

Another way to reduce thermo is to not use anything to complicated. i.e: using a lot of advanced logic in a section of the level; less complicated shapes, ect.2011-03-15 19:54:00

Hmm well here's the thing with Ali's method, once you change all the materials to one (or most of them) you gain a little bit of space for a couple of extra objects. Once you enter play mode, or return to the main menu, the thermo shoots back up when you go back into create. Instead of wasting time changing all the materials back after you add your objects (which would work), you can simply change all the materials to a different material the next time and gain the same amount of thermo space you had left to fill. So hopefully this can help you, I've tried other methods and they haven't really worked for me, except for emitting a whole section of your level, but this takes time and usually doesn't work since you can't capture it all.

Best of luck I'm sure there's a way but I just haven't found it yet.,

The only way you can reduce thermometer is by switching materials.
Now remember, that's the only way you can, any other way is not reducing thermo, you just conserving thermo. Basically switching materials is a way to cheat more thermometer. Any other method is used to avoid from wasting thermometer. Get my point? By the time you do, you have to realize that if you don't apply to certain standards, then it'll be impossible to get your thermometer back.

Anyway, the 3 main things that kill thermometer the most.
Material Madness
Remember this and read importantly. Some materials kill thermometer more than other materials, but that's not what kills the thermometer easily. It's not how much material you use either. Wanna know what kills it drastically? The amount of different materials used. Now you can have a 2 theme colored level and it can last over 10 minutes of gameplay. While others think how is it possible? Well, the level only consist of two colors making it very long. Now having a rainbow theme level, trust me, it's almost impossible to last long and will be for about 2 minutes. Why do you think the introduction of the level seems to kill thermometer the fastest? Well, in the beginning stages of creating, materials begin to be chosen. Now you ask, what if you start with all cardboard and change materials last? You get the glitch that cheats thermometer, that's what. However, after building the first four notches of thermo, it becomes tougher to kill thermo now. That's due to the fact that you're probably sticking to the same pallette of materials making it tough for thermometer to run out. To make a long story short, don't use too many materials.

The Corner and his Editor...
This kills thermometer depending on how many corners are created on 1 single object. If it's a character in the level and he is corner edited absolutely spectacular, then he'll most likely eat one thermometer notch itself. Don't fret though, saving the character as an object and using the copied object won't eat the same amount of thermo as the original copy. In fact, the thermometer barely moves a bit, and by barely, I mean about 1/10 of a notch. Now to avoid thermometer killage, you can avoid making too many corners on one object. This includes terrain. How do I know when it has too many corners you say? Well, the game gets slow when your corner editing the object and sometimes your game crashes. Sometimes and area needs to many corners, but remember, not Everything needs to many corners. Why do you think sketches levels are so short? It's because everything is glamorized by the corner editor. Becareful of what needs a lot of corner editing and what doesn't.

Every Sticker Hall of Fame
Okay, stickering applies just like the materials except quite crazier. You can't choose every sticker in a level or it'll eat all the thermometer. Stickers need to be limited to a certain pallette. Just use the same group of stickers or it'll eat thermo. What's different about stickers on the other hand is the amount of stickers on an object as well. Basically a level with 1 sticker on each material would eat less thermo than placing a lot of stickers on 1 material. Crazy, right? In other words, you can't use a lot of different stickers or put too many on one material. It'll save thermometer if you follow this step.

Now that you got these steps down, you can conserve thermometer.
Now are you ready for a secret that kills thermometer and makes it impossible to get back? Yeah, I said it, impossible to get back. This is a big reason to why thermometer dies as well. It doesn't eat a lot of thermometer, but it does gradually make an unnoticeable difference of consumed thermo. Are you ready? Creating. You're probably thinking, how does creating kill thermometer you ask? I'm not sure, but I have noticed this after being in PSP create mode in so long. It's actually crazy because only the psp version of LBP does this. Now creating in create mode takes a little bit of thermometer gradually. It's not what kills thermometer. You wanna know why thermometer is killed by this method? Sometimes you decide to delete a piece of the level that was useless or you thought you can improve on. Well, guess what? That piece of level you deleted just basically gave you back about 90 percent of your thermo back. It's not that it didn't give you all your thermo back. Its mainly because of 10 percent of that piece of thermometer is secretly in your level that you can't get back. It stays there sometimes. Sometimes you can delete an object and you'll get 100 percent of your thermometer back. Though, sometimes you get about 90 percent back and you didn't notice it. Now how do you avoid it? To avoid it? Try to plan out your levels and know what your building. If possible, try your practice of something such as a boss fight or a character in an empty level. Then just put the real thing in your real level or your successfully planned out boss to be remade but improved. That can only avoid it.

You now ask, how do I know this? I noticed thermo going up and I had little done. One day, I decided to delete EVERYTHING in one of my levels. As I was deleting every little piece until all was gone, guess my thermometer? I had about 2 notches still full even though my level was completely empty. How did this happen you say? It's bugged thermo that you can't get back. So don't mess up on your creations or redo stuff in your levels. Plan out what you're building. If you think it eats a little thermo, remember, the slightest amount of your thermo can do a lot following the three steps above.

Now that Is a lot to read, but it sure helps much.
Good luck people.

(I shortened your quote just because it would've been too long.)

I couldn't have said it better myself! You also covered some things I didn't know but I'll admit that I had noticed something fishy about the thermometer in my levels before, I could just never put my finger on it. Sometime I might test this out with one of my jam-packed levels and delete everything, then fill the thermo again and again to see if when it's empty, it can have a huge noticeable amount of thermo filled up.

Anyways thanks for that I'm sure it will help out everyone a lot.
