The Review Chain

The TL;DR version - Leave a review of the previous poster's level, then the poster after you reviews yours. Longer Version - The idea of this thread is simple - you make a post reviewing a game by the member who posted last, then the next person reviews your game, the person after that reviews theirs, and so on ad infinitum (or until the world explodes in 2012. Apparently.) I thought this would be a nice way for newcomers such as myself to get a little feedback and publicity, and for longer-standing members it could possibly reveal a few hidden gems that have been overlooked along the way the way. I don't want to force a standard method of reviewing on people - one style of reviewing does not necessarily provide a good fit for all people trying to use it - so I'll leave the form of feedback up to the individual reviewer. I would however like to set an agenda of constructive criticism if I may, as that more than anything else helps us to improve as we go along. I don't want this to descend into an "I'll write good things if you write good things" thread, which is partly why it's structured so people dont review each other's levels. BUT be aware when posting here that you may well get some criticism and be prepared for it. If you're going to put your work out there on a pedestal in public, you've got to expect the occasional pigeon to take a dump on it DO Feel free to post in the thread as many times as you like DOFeel free to post the same level for review as many times as you like (as long as you review another game). Differentreviewers may have different responses, so I don't see a problem getting many reviews for one level. DO NOT post in such a way as you review your own levels. That would be naughty. Very naughty indeed. OK, I'll kick thinks off in the next post with an arbitrary choice of level seeing as there's obviously no poster before me, and lets see if this can gain some traction... | 2011-03-14 23:13:00 Author: matneee Posts: 66 |
http://ie.lbp.me/img/bl/1de79005fa0d883a22f35ed65bbca0e82d996063.png Game - Surrounded Creator - Voganlight LBP.me page - http://lbp.me/v/yv75q1 What I Wrote In-Game "Pretty much flawless in terms of gameplay. It provides a tight, focused design that ramps up the pace nicely, and the ship controls jsut right - very responsive so you feel more that it's something you're fighting WITH rather than against. I'm always startled by how many shooters get the basic feel of the ship/character/etc wrong, but not here. If I had to nitpick, I'd say there's a brief flash just before play starts where you can see sackboy/entrance - maybe add a bit of masking to stop that slight jar?" It's difficult to know what else to say, really. This is a retro-feel, two-stick shooter, meaning you're going to get a lot of neon, and a lot of bullets flying about. I like this a lot, and I'd like to qualify that by saying I'm not one for shooters really. It's a great amalgamation of music and light, and the ship feels like an extension of the player once you get going. It's very easy to look at a game like this and thing "Oh, that's a simple enough concept", but the trick Surrounded manages is being making a relatively concept hugely addictive. There's a depth of enjoyment to be mined here that belies the underlying simplicity of the concept. That's something that applies to the visuals to - it's very much a ballet of minimalistic neon, but the individual strands build up to form something beautiful. Verdict I see that Voganlight has other shooters out there, and I'll definitely be taking a look after this. I'm not the kind of reviewer who breaks things down into individual categories (but others following - feel free to). I think this is a very attractive game marred only by the sudden flash of a lump of light matter(?) just before start of play, and it plays like a dream[/B] Score - 9/10 If the next person in the chain would be so kind as to review Skid Marks - Track & Race Editor! Neat idea, but I think you should rename it 'The Review Centipede'. | 2011-03-15 05:04:00 Author: bonner123 Posts: 1487 |
Yes I have to agree, the last reviewer will not be the happy centipede either. If I get time later I will check it out. I wanted to start a feedback group that just did feedback for the members, but that fell through, prehaps this one will do better. | 2011-03-16 00:50:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |
Not so far, apparently C'mon folks - I know forms fact dozens of you want reviews, so this is a golden opportunity. Tell you what. To get the ball rolling, I'll review the next poster myself. | 2011-03-16 02:08:00 Author: matneee Posts: 66 |
A Review of Skid Marks - A race/track editor Racers are something everyone is a bit bored with to be honest, the genre has been done time and time again with no new aspects added apart from possibly detail in the scenery. However, it seems there will always be something to surprise us. This is that thing. What matneee provides us is the ability to create are own track. This is done through a grid at the start of the level where you are given a handful of stickers which enable you to drawn out the design that you want. I have an inkling of how this was managed, but honestly I can't begin to fathom the sheer amount of wires stemming from that one grid. Getting down to it though, the actual racing part could use some improvement, specifically with the turning which I though was a little too responsive. Also, I was expecting some visual hints on which buttons to press to go forward but they weren't provided, thankfully mashing all of them at once to find out that R2 was the one I was looking for meant that it wasn't too much of an issue. Visual wise, eh, I've seen prettier but it's nice, simple and stylised so it gets away with it. You leave a trail of lights behind you (I assume that's where the title comes from, horrible title by the way it's the kind of comparison you don't want to be making really ) which adds a little extra so all's not so bad. Matneee includes a square next to the start line to tell you how many points you have, what lap you're on and so on, which is yet another little addition which improves the level far more than you'd think. Speaking of little things, the score works by giving you a load of points and then slowly taking them away till you finish so I'd though I'd cheat the system by making a really short course on my 2nd playthrough. But it seems the length of the course is linked to how many points you start with so a short track = less points. I don't quite know why but this really impressed me. This is a pretty average racer when you get down to the actual racing part, but everything else is done brilliantly and it's nice to see some new life injected into an old and battered genre. Yay + Level Hearted For the next reviewer: http://lbp.me/v/y-k0z0 | 2011-03-16 13:35:00 Author: JonnysToyRobot Posts: 324 |

Although the total in the whole level is quite a bit higher than that As an aside, the control buttons do show up - they're at the bottom of the screen when you're racing. That said, if a player hasn't spotted them, I've ballsed it up really haven't I... Oh, and the title was a running joke that seemed very vaguely amusing, back when I had absolutely no intention of releasing the level. *sigh* I'd really someone else reviews JonnysToyRobot's level - http://lbp.me/v/y-k0z0 as I don't want to have people repeatedly reviewing my level (well, I do, but that's not really the point of this thread.) But if nobody else has done it by tomorrow evening, I'll pick it up. | 2011-03-16 15:41:00 Author: matneee Posts: 66 |

Well it has been two days now...so I guess I will become the next link int he centipede... This review is for... A Run In Autumn http://lbp.me/v/y-k0z0 http://lbp.me/v/y-k0z0 The Nice colors and design, simlpe little blurb at the start...perhaps have it vanish after the player hits "x" by using that movie camera skip option with a link from the camera to the subtiles ender (having the sequencer on dissolve)...or just have it repeat when a player dies...but also add a little time, first time I was placing somehting down and I missed it. Also if you hit "X" right away you run off camera and die. The music is perfect for the level, the falling leaves, the simple tree columns, and the background is very well designed. I love the floor colors and the leaves from the feet...but wondered if they should only emit when the player moves. The dogs in teh fog for the danger area did not work for me. They are not horrible, they just seem out of place...perhaps the motion of the leaves, the player and the fog does not translate well for the cut out dog shapes. The forced running harkens me back to a slaghter House level, it is a nice idea, but the first slope seemed a bit evil...just awkawrd jumping up. I think what made the deaths stand out more was the fact that there is a six second pause before respawning. It can get a bit weird, the firs ttime I thought the level was broken and reloaded it. Some of the jumps a little later are pure evil blind faith jumps. They always seem wrong, but in a game where you can't move back and forth it kind of makes it more evil. I also landed on the edges of the block on several of the slanted to the right by 45 degree landings where I jumped from a higher area. I noticed a few places where I could see out of your design area below the fog or such and it kind of took away from your nice design. The first slope running up was one place. The movie camera jump is a bit evil...kind of cuts in before you can fully decide your jump. The spikes and bounce pads worked fine for me. The ending just ends, but that was also fine. So great mvoing jump level, great art and perfectsound. Could be even better if those glitches were fixed. Keep up the good work. Worth loading up even if just to see the design at the start. OK for whom ever decides to review next...you can hit up my Space Vesel 8212 (http://lbp.me/v/x4vhzh). Be warned it is not the shortest level, and you need to have community items turned on for the stickers to open doors and such. | 2011-03-19 06:45:00 Author: celsus Posts: 822 |

I do not want to force a standard method of review in people - a style of review is not necessarily a good fit for all people trying to use it - so I will leave the feedback form to the individual reviewer. | 2011-05-19 08:37:00 Author: Unknown User |
