There is so much more to LBP than what meets the eye. Telling you every single detail, tip and trick at the top of their heads in a single post/topic is nearly impossible That'd be like compressing the whole help section into a single thread :o Ask your questions That's gonna be a lot easier!

As for making something with a wow factor built-in, what you need mostly is to have something original. Doesn't really matter how good you are with logic or building if you lack creativity. I suggest you come up with an original concept. Then think of all the possible parts where you know you'll need help, and then post them as you start creating the level and encounter these issues. On the go!

The best way to build an awesome level that you can be proud of is either to spend a lot of time on it, ask people to give suggestions for improvement and then use those suggestions to improve your level. or you need to come up with a simple and original idea, it doesn't have to be complicated just original and unique.2011-03-14 23:09:00

Ha! that is very true. No matter how well you do your logic, the best of it will rarely be noticed. In fact, the best behind the scenes logic is never even noticed at all, except by a very small number of people, because it is integrated so seamlessly that it just seems like it was always there.

You can work hard for three months making teh perfect system for your level, and have it flawless. No one will mention it. Screw up or miss just one thing and it's all they'll notice.

Hey,

Your looking for some help in atmospheres and detail, creating background mechanics that make the audience gasp and wow at every moment, it's difficult, i won't lie, it will take time and several lessons, but i'm willing to teach you if your willing to listen. If you would like me to teach you, send me a PSN friend request, my PSN name is RacingCreed, so add me.

The way i'll teach will require you to show me what you already know and how you already build, therefore giving me a rough idea of what i'm dealing with, and what kind of talents your at, then i'll begin with weaknesses building them into strengths then into mastery, it'll take hours upon hours of work, but if your truely dedicated, i'm here to help. Hit me up, and let the training begin.

For me if I think of a theme I search for it on LBP, see what other people have done (if they have done it) and see how I can improve on it, what I like, what I don't. I search google images find pictures of things that for me represent the theme and then work out how to break them down into simpler shapes to make them in LBP (as I am not the greatest at building the simpler the better). Then I use my most important tool, my imagination. All these above steps of research help fire the old thing up and see what I can pop out. Don't think of the theme as a limitation, think of its as a picture, the world which is your imagination, let it spill onto the screen. Don't look at the tools as restrictive (if you cant use them properly or don't understand them) look at them as your paintbrushes. Use your paintbrushes to make the picture.

Sounds silly but that works for me.

What tickles my creativity is shutting down my PS3 and do other stuff: reading, watching movies, reminiscing older games, talking with (non-gamer) friends. Staring at a blank level is the most uninspiring activity for me, so I make sure I already have a good idea of what I want to do. Also, the longer you choose (or are forced) to not sit at your PS3, the longer you have to 'ripe' your ideas.

For example, I had this idea of three mini bosses in front of my (Egyptian themed) level's big boss (which I had already mostly finished). The idea came from a need to use one ability that I found not fitting with the main boss. I found that the rest of my level lacked 'life', as in moving enemies, and I only want to do those if I can make them look and act really good.

I also went and looked for what people would serve at an Egyptian court and came up with priests, warriors and concubines. From that I came up with what their individual abilities would be.

Lastly, I play World of Warcraft on the side and some raid encounters in that game are 'councils'; a single boss fight that contains individual enemies with unique abilities. That was a great inspiration to me. At the end I still felt something was missing in the big picture. So I decided the left out boss ability that had motivated me from the start should become more than just an ability and instead the element that is a constant in the entire fight; at first a threat, you have to turn it around and use it against the bosses.

All of this I had written down and sketched out within a day and a half. With my PS3 switched off. My point is, if all of it already makes good sense (to you) before you start building stuff, then the rest is a matter of execution; that part will completely depend on your personal style, skills and tastes. In the end, I believe the player who plays your level will see past the prettiness you put in and feel that it is balanced and well thought out, and I believe that that makes a great level.

Add me on PSN (http://lbp.me/u/Stellakris) if you wanna chat.

...and then work out how to break them down into simpler shapes to make them in LBP (as I am not the greatest at building the simpler the better).

It baffles me every time when I examine the work of MM or other creative folks up close, how they managed to keep stuff so simple and yet effective and convincing. I think therein lies perhaps the most important value of creating stuff in LBP; keep it as simple as possible while maintaining the illusion. I.e.: a car does not need four wheels if two wheels in the front layers are enough to convince the player. The clockwork in my tower level is not really a functioning system, although I originally wanted to. It doesn't matter, because it is convincing enough and that is all people care about.

Antikris hit the nail on the head. When MM make a level they dont sit in front of the screen until they come up with one. As he/she said (and myself in part) go do something to inspire you! If you are struggling with the tools and not your ideas (your ideas are flowing but you cant get them down) Look at something in your house, something funny shaped or a bit complicated, break it down on paper first as if using the tools of LBP then try and build it. Once you realise what you have the ability to do it may spark your imagination and you may see things from a slightly different angle.2011-03-18 00:46:00
