The Asylum. A Big Horror Project

Archive: 4 posts

I began the intro to a new horror project to get into once another project is complete. It's called "The Asylum" for now. Might change the name later. I posted a teaser trailer/video and people seem to like it already. You can find the LBP.me page HERE (http://lbp.me/v/ycw3m3)

But it's early in development and haven't ironed out details on what the story and gameplay will entail. I know I will put at least two diff endings which will be affected by player choice. But other than that, I'm looking for some suggestions or ideas of what players may like to see in this type of level.

Theme is in an asylum that operates somewhat like old timey sanitariums. Regular electroshock therapy, mad experiments, and staff misconduct. The player will be playing the role of a highly dangerous patient kept in the maximum security wing which the level starts in. Environment is dark, damp, run-down, and heartless.

I'm torn however if I should make it in a realistic fashion, or go in a more surreal fashion since the character's perception of reality may be altered due to his possible insanity. I've also thought about making enemies out of particular kinds of patients, treatments, and different kinds of psychosis. I am leaning toward a more surreal gameplay, but I'm afraid of taking elements too far and crossing into the absurd, making it lose it's level of true horror and fear.

The preview says Spring, but I think a more realistic time-frame will be early summer. I want to spend more time on this level and make it my proud creation until I can make something even grander. lol

But I'm highly open to suggestions, opinions, and other input. Tell me...What scares you?

If there's one thing that'd be a really scary AND surreal experience for me, it'd be to mix the reality-warping scenes from the F.E.A.R. series (such as corridors growing longer or new rooms appearing where old ones should've been) with the reality-warping transitions from the Silent Hill series, with some blood and gore and traces of paranormal activity (like seeing ghosts, objects move by themselves, or lights flicker, or by hearing strange sounds) before said reality-warping scenes. Perhaps we could have the player do battle against enemies inspired by the various enemies from both F.E.A.R. and Silent Hill?

Also, if you need me to refer to you some other scary levels for inspiration, I'd probably want to recommend levels like Spectral Fear, Inferno, Lonely Village, or House of Hell, among other levels that I've hearted.

i think that it should altar between surreal and reality. this will cause that "hang on, that wasn't there before" kind of fear. this gives fear because the player never really knows where he/she is going because of its constant change, creating an atmosphere of insecurity and defenselessness. i have been learning from two brilliant creators. i have learned a lot from them. one of them creates horrors. if you would like me and him to come and witness your creation and give our views or if you want to talk just send a friend request to me and i will arrange it XD. also if it altered between surreal and reality, effects like sudden change it temperature, lighting, etc can cause a "freak-out" maybe this could happen when the player is going the wrong way? i hope i help you. 2011-03-13 10:25:00

This is a great idea and I agree with nerzdadestroyer. You should make things obvious to the player and take it away from them when they start to get used to seeing that. Also, don't forget to have some puzzels.Almost like Resident Evil.2011-03-13 11:46:00
