How awesome is this?

Archive: 19 posts

Santa is really Odin according to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus#Influence_of_Germanic_paganism_and_fol klore).

I think this is a major point that parents miss when telling their kids to leave carrots and mince pies out for "Santa Claus", that he's the Norse god of, what? Everything? And the carrots aren't for reindeer, they're for a horse with 8 legs!

So who's gonna be starting their letters "Dear Father Odin, for Christmas/Yule I would like..."?

(btw, I like how this was auto-tagged with 'awesome, this?'

That is sweet.

Christmas is looking better for me now, I'm gonna be celebrating the Germanic God Odin.

I had begged my wife to let me name our firstborn Odin, but she wouldn't even entertain the idea. My uncle didn't like it only because he felt like it might actually set him up to lose an eye at some point throughout his life. So, we named him Gavin Edward...2008-11-26 12:58:00

Is there some sort of joke there that I'm not getting? Doesn't quite compare to Odin, does it? :/ Imagine you're at school, what would you rather your name was? Odin or Gavin? (no offense to your son, btw)

There's no joke; just proving I didn't get my way...

If I'm at school, I definitely want to be named after the Norse god of war and death. But that's just me.

Gavin was just a name I liked and it came to me out of nowhere. Edward was a family name for both of us. And then there's the fact that Eddie Vedder is one of my idols...

Gets a little weird here. I came up with an alter ego at some point a few years ago and went by Edward Allister Frail. This was solely for creative purposes; helped me get some unbiased responses back as far as my writing went. Anyway, calling him Edward was also kind of a cool way of naming him after me without calling him Jason, Jr.

If I raise my son the way I plan, Odin would fit him perfectly.2008-11-26 15:43:00

My thoughts exactly, but the wife wouldn't have it. She wants him to be a little gentleman. Whatever. I wanted something similar: a little WARMONGERING gentleman...

I grew up going to a Catholic school in Ireland and carrying the name Osiris(on my birth certificate), the Egyptian god of the Afterlife. I was a hit with all the nuns. I always got hit by them for doing stupid stuff, and my response was "how deep is your faith? you can rule me here, but I named after the god of the afterlife!"
followed by another beating!

Tell me you still go by Osiris. That's fantastic.

it's a curse and a blessing!
try getting a job with a name like mine. Granted I have a great career in ITIS, but it took a thousand rejections. I have even been asked "do you have a middle name we can call you by?" I think I am going to name my kid (whenever I find a woman dumb enough to stay with me and have a baby with me) Mike, or John.

yup, Si for short.

Si is still pretty cool. You could go with a generic first name, but you know deep down you want to give him/her an awesome middle name.

It's suddenly quite clear to me that you've already invested considerable time into naming that kid. Let me know how it turns out when the day comes; I'm sure it'll be amazing to say the least.

I just have to find a girl that will go along with that name! that is where the real problem lies!

Osiris, that is the greatest name I've come across.
I've considered changing my name from "Marc Pruden" to "Valo Hurst". Valo after my idol Ville Valo, of HIM, and Hurst after my best friend's last name "Broadhurst".

As for raising kids, my kids will probably hate me. But my brother's kids will love me. I'll be the rocker uncle with the tattoos. Hardcore.

But yeah, back on topic, I love you for finding that nugget of information. I am seriously devoting Christmas to Odin. Celebrate it his way. I'll probably freak my parents out, it'll be sweet.
