Take a look outside or look at real trees. The trick with folliage and plants is that nothing in nature is perfectly symmetrical, if at all.

Just make four or five different trees that all have slightly different arrangements with the branches and leaves if there are any depending on the season of your level. Just don't make the trees overly complicated. Use the same set of trees. Flip them and scale them to make them appear different at first glace. Making a bunch of entirely different trees for the entire level can be a bit tedious and hard on the ol' thermo.

Doubt this helped much, but basically just try using reference pictures and be easy on the thermo.

I've always been really irked by the fact that trees made with materials aren't round. I used the merging tool to merge some stuff with the handle of a hammer. Looks pretty good.2011-03-12 07:14:00

Have you tried using the corner editing tool? It's really helpful when trying to make unique shapes. I wish I had a pic of the one tree my brother made.

All he used was a block of dark wood and the corner editor. He had to do some fancy melding work to get the whole tree together (it's pretty big and intricate). The game told him it was too complicated so he split it in half and 'glitched' it back together.

But anyway, once you get the basic skeleton down (aka: no leaves) it's just a matter of attaching leaves either made out of material or sticking on decos.

Hope that helped, at least a little...

What I do is (no joke) I press the X button with my index finger and smear a circle with the left stick. As I am smearing, I make the circle smaller to where it eventually disappears.

Plus, I never ever make trees more than a thin layer. Unless I make it to where the camera is at a fixed angle, or a camera effect.

Ya i always use the corner editor. I guess they look OK but not great. They just look wierd. And i tried to make foresty levels on LBP1 MANY times before but the one thing that has stopped me EVERY TIME was my inability to make a good tree. The only reason i havent already quit on making my level already is becuse i made this song that fits really well with the level im making an i really want to use it.

you dont have to make traditional looking trees, you could give your level a very stylised look perhaps by using very angular trees with lots of right angles and square sponges for groups of leaves? theres lots you can do : ) perhaps a very curly tree or very curvy and organised like the ones in Eve's Asylum? hope you create some good ones, good luck!2011-03-13 20:46:00

I tried making tree leave stickers in a few sizes and shades, then placed them on a cloth tree canopy, with a wood grain base, always thick at the base of the trunk and then fanning out as it hits up about 1/3 the height of the whole tree, leaving the first few branches visible below the leaves fanning out up into the canopy.

THere is a photo of my attempt on this level, but it is not the best.

I'm by no means an expert at tree-making, nor level-designing for that matter, but I am an expert in frustration as a result of tree-making. So with that in common, I thought I'd drop in and offer a few tips of my own.

What materials are you using? A tweak to your wood type can make a world of difference. Are you making trees a single layer thick, or "prop" trees (thin layer?) Make your trees fit your level. Too tall? Shorten them. Too short? Just make some interesting looking trees with a hint of branches near the top of the camera view.

Are you going for a certain motif? MM's signature "patchwork" theme is drastically different than, say, a realistic tree. Decide which kind of tree you'll need for your level, how many/how high/color motif, etc. beforehand. Play around with lighting to make sure your texture looks right in the level itself (or add/tweak some lighting where your trees will be.)

Are you using decorations and stickers to decorate your wood or use as leaves? Depending on the style you're going for, these simple additions can take a boring wood stump and make it into a masterpiece.

One rule I constantly remind myself is the good ol' K.I.S.S. rule (Keep it Simple, Stupid.) Don't go crazy with the corner editing tool. Keep your branches down to a minimum of angles and sub-branches. A complex tree is a difficult one to re-edit, copy, break apart or scale.

Look at other people's work. Load up some popular "tree" or "forest"-themed levels. While playing them, focus on the level itself. Did the trees pop out at you or distract? Or were they cleverly added to the background or level in order to create a genuine sense of setting? I find the latter examples to be the best to base my own designs on. (Media Molecule's own work is actually a great place to start, as their trees tend to be very abstract and/or part of the actual level. See here (http://i.neoseeker.com/ca/littlebigplanet_conceptart_KHwXy_thumb.jpg) and here (http://i.ytimg.com/vi/8tWRK7_1mjk/0.jpg), for some very basic examples.)

Lastly, what you think may look odd or misshapen may look like masterwork art to someone else. If it doesn't feel right, or you get burnt out trying to perfect it, come back to the level in two or three days. You may find what you created actually looks pretty darn good.

Something I've found myself doing is shamelessly "stealing" Mm's shapes.

What I do is make a sticker cutout of a tree, remove the sticker and the leaves, edit the trunk just a little bit, and then just make my own leaves out of a material/compressed green clouds.

It's easy to do, and it gets the job done well enough.
