Transmission logic for a car

Notice: This tutorial is gonna cover both automatic and manual transmissions, at some point.
Manual Transmission
a novel by timeSlider

I've been working on a manual transmission using a selector and two inputs from a controlinator to shift between gears.

I ran into a problem early on with this setup. It works for the most part until you reach the 1st or last gear. Continuing to press L2 or R2 would cycle the selector all the way around and start over. Basically you could shift from 4th to 1st or vice-versa. In order to solve this, we'll need:

a sequencer, a counter, a direction splitter, a not gate, and a few batteries (see figure 1c)

Change the counter to 3 or however many gears you want (tips: it's always gonna be the number of gears you want -1)
Connect the counters output to the sequencers input
Change the sequencers input action to positional

You should notice that when you adjust the counter the sequencer moves to a different location. Place a battery on all of these locations. (see figure 1d, 1e, and 1f)

The 1st battery will connect to the 2nd input of the selector.
The 2nd battery will connect to the 3rd input of the selector and so on.

But what about the 1st input of the selector?

Create a not gate. Connect the counter to the not gate and the not gate to the 1st input of the selector.

Use a direction combiner and inputs from a controlinator to use the system.

your first setup was fine, it just needed a couple of AND and NOT gates, the setup in the pic below stops it from looping back to the other end of the selector

Finally! I've tried making my own manual transmission several weeks ago, but I gave up after I couldn't figure out how to keep the selector from looping over. This will also be very useful for other stuff I'm making too.2011-03-14 05:02:00
