How to get holo material to show up in the out of bounds foreground layers

Archive: 2 posts

Here is something I found and wanted to share.

I was working on some interface graphics the other day, using holographic material, but it got covered by objects that I had moved into the foreground layers using the 3d layer glitch. No problem, I thought, so I moved the holo objects into those layers as well. As I did that, the holo stopped showing up wherever it was not over a blank background or intersecting with certain objects in the foreground.

Upon some further experimentation, I found out the holo does show when it is part of -- or floating above -- an object that shares at least one foreground layer and one regular layer. So here is how I fixed it: behind the holo interface objects in my foreground layers I stuck (glued) a block of holo material that extended a few layers down right behind my interface. I set the brightness of this block to 1% (0 will obscure the interface again) and 0 animation, so this block will be practically invisible.

In the picture you can see the holo object in effect; before I found the solution, the object was obscured by the metal ceiling beams in the foreground.

Interesting, nice one. You can make your holo 100% invisible by putting a black sticker on it, rather than keeping it at 1%.2011-03-10 19:17:00
