Retro Animations + Jumping.

Archive: 6 posts

Hey I was playing around with sprites last night, and I have a question about doing things retro style. 8 bit and what not. Do people typically glue the various layers of their animations to an actual solid block to help achieve the effect of jumping, or do people use other means to 'land' their jumps and stuff. Understand what I mean. Probably not.

So I'll explain. I mean last night I glued together a bunch of various animations all attached to a a few sequencers and various inputs and what not, and for a simple jump type of animation I just glued a few of my holograms higher (and higher) . (I was doing this at on in the morning in a sleep deprived state.) Needless to say I quickly realized that this isn't true jumping, because at the end of the jump you always end up back at the bottom obviously.

To combat this it seems you'd just glue all the animations in the same place, and then glue those to a block at the feet of the hologram and set the movers on that. So it has a 'true' jump.

Just making sure: This is how most people do it right?

I did not use a block, I just had various frames of my animation, and the jump animations were higher than my normal walking ones, so it gave the illusion of jumping, but in the end you had to come back down to where the walking animations were because obviously they didn't move up it at all.

I did not use a block, I just glue all the animations together and set them lose.

Looking back on it I realized my mistake, and was wondering if most people accomplish the jumping by gluing the holograms to an actual solid base block to get the jumping right. It probably is... just wanted to confirm it.

I was not thinking when I was gluing things together because it was like one in the morning. Hah.

If it were me, I think I'd def glue them to a block and use movers so I could more easily tune jump height and stuff... 2011-03-10 01:12:00

Yeah... Now to craft an actual hologram character instead of only a silly test. Hah.2011-03-10 01:35:00
