PS3 Online Storage for PS+ Subscribers

Archive: 20 posts

Sorry if this is old news, but it's new to me and I'd have thought that to LBP players, this surely is one of the best things ever! especially for me as I bought PS+ a month ago

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-03-09-ps3-online-storage-firmware-3-6-tomorrow

PS3 Online Storage for game saves arrives tomorrow as part of firmware update 3.60, Sony has announced.

But only PlayStation Plus subscribers can use it.

PS+ subs get 150MB of space to upload and dump saved game files to (to a maximum of 1000). The average game save is 1-2MB. These are then accessible from any PS3 with a net connection.

Uploading to the cloud, to give it a fancier name, requires pressing triangle on the chosen save file, selecting "copy" and the destination as "online storage". When on another PS3, sign into your PSN account, go to Saved Data Utility and hey presto, there's your saved game file.

Save files from games with copy protection can still be cloned and uploaded, but are unavailable to download elsewhere for 24 hours.

If your PlayStation Plus subscription lapses your Online Storage files will be inaccessible until you renew. Save files are kept for six months before deletion, however, allowing plenty of leeway.

A PlayStation Plus subscription costs ?39.99/?49.99 for a year or ?11.99/?14.99 for 90 days.

Wow, I never heard about this. I think this will be great. Especially if your PS3 decides to die on you.2011-03-09 17:52:00

I've been rather underwhelmed by the PS+ subscription service TBH.

The first month, they gave away LBP (already owned) - the 2nd month they gave away Wipout HD (already owned) - and since then they have been just releasing B or C list titles, Old PS1 and Minis that I have no real interest in. And they've just released Ratchet & Clank for the 2nd time within a year - which is doubly annoying seeing as I didn't even want it the 1st time around.

I've got upgraded storage on my PS3 - aswell as an external HDD which I back up to regularly - so extra storage is useless to me aswell.

Don't think I'll be renewing it unless the content gets much better much faster.

Let's hope your house never burns down eh I'd much rather have something remote for any kind of storage... I was thinking the other day how awesome it would be if I could get dropbox on my PS3... which is basically what this is.

I bought it to coincide with the release of Stacking, which I was gonna buy anyway so effectively dropped a year's sub down to 30 quid for me. I figure there will be enough supposedly B/C grade titles and awesome minis to fill that over 12 months. Most of the best games I've bought recently have been D/L titles from PSN, so I figure it's worth it less than the price of a beer per month I find costing things on a monthly basis against the price of beer is a always the best way to make financial decisions.

My Advice would be to buy an external HDD for the ?40 you would have spent on the PS+ sub.
That way, after a year - you'll still be able to access the content on the HDD without shelling out another ?40 ;
And you can use it with your laptop or PC etc - store movies, aswell as saves etc.

I couldn't in good conscience recommend the PS+ sub to anyone - as I have had nothing but disapointment from it. It's like a new disapointment every month

Ya, I think they mentioned this in Gameinformer or something, didn't think they'd do it so soon tho.
Whelp, you know what that means?
New console out in 1 - 2yrs.

Well, come on, the PS3's getting hacked, sued, and bashed, so maybe they thought its time to move to the next gen.

What's funny, is that I was given the sub as a birthday present (Well, a ?40 PSN card); So I just bought the years sub with it.

& even though I didn't technically pay for it - I still think it was a waste of money

Did I mention - there's no pleasing me

If only they'd done this earlier and I wouldn't have lost countless hours of saves when my PS3 decided to kill itself a month ago :/

Also @new console idea: I don't think that's the case. I have inside info and everything. Honest, however unreliable it may be. But I don't think we'll see one for a few years yet.

Not an idea, random guess/joke, taken from G.I. as well, which is where I saw the announcement for online storage thing, not really being serious.

Also, naw I don't buy it, people who really have "inside info" as you call it, don't go around telling anyone "Hey everyone, I got inside info!" most of the time.
Those people usually just want others to think they do, specially saying things like "No really, I do, trust me!!!!" when no one's arguing or denying it, shows it.

PS+ is one of the best things I've ever invested in with my PS3. I'm not one to buy many games, so I thought this would be worth it. And it definatly has been! Very pleased, I will renew my subscription once my year of + is over.2011-03-10 00:00:00

it's 150mb actually That's actually a lot of space you know, game saves don't take up too much space, many being under a megabyte. My GT5 save file (which i just uploaded to the cloud ) is about 600kb.

I suppose more services is better service.. and does make the PS+ sub a bit more value for money... especially when I compare it to what you get for your Xbox Live sub(= a kick in the nuts).

Although, it's bit rubbish that they erase your saves if you stop subscribing for 6 months. As soon as I heard this I thought;
"What if you are on your last month of subscription and your PS3 dies a YLoD - and you can't afford a replacement PS3 for a few months (6) - then the entire point of you backing up your saves is negated" ;
I mean, I haven't subscribed to World of Warcraft in about 3/4 years - but they still keep my character saves, just in case I renew my sub.
It's a paid service - they could easily do better than 6 months.

Actually, it WAS posted before I believe...

Maybe... I think it was on an NGP thread though, saying how it would let you easily switch from playing one system to the other.

And considering my LBP2 profile is only like, a tenth of the storage, It sounds useful. (Most other games are tiny, so no worry there...)

I only have a 40GB PS3, so any extra space is appreciated!

I want to be able to back up dlc in case the system dies out. Saves don't take up enough room for me to get +just for that.2011-03-11 02:53:00

back up DLC???? When you buy a new PS3 and put your PSN on the new PS3, shouldn't you just be able to check out your transactions or go to your download list to redownload everything? It has always been that way, so saving DLC to a different online storage is pointless.2011-03-11 14:57:00

Can you still download a time limited PS+ offer after the offer has expired (if you downloaded it during the time limitation)?

Haven't tried it myself.
