Galaxy Simulation

Archive: 7 posts

This is something I'm creating for my Space RPG, but I felt it would be a rather epic idea all on its own.

I've created, with the help of Epicurean Dreamer, an orbiting system, where objects randomly pick an orbit, and stick to that orbit.

I've also created some gravity logic to pull objects together as they pass by each other. This could eventually allow for planets to form.

Black holes, stars, planets, asteroids, meteors, moons, etc... could all happen.

This would pretty much be my Space level without the whole RPG component. Anyone think it'd be interesting to play?

Perhaps you exist as a small asteroid, and need to 'absorb' other space entities to grow. You win by becoming a black hole.....?

I'll make a global gravity system if this idea has any support.

That sounds cool, but as a random mass thrown into the great chaos stew we call the universe it'd be kind of tedious and slow to play as an asteroid. Don't get me wrong, sitting back and watching astral bodies interact and behave the way they do with limitless potential for unpredictability.

If you can put the logic and know-how into it, do it. It'd be nice to see someone make a science sand-box.

Also, check this out:

Media Molecule are working in conjunction with ConnectED, a branch of Sony Computer Entertainment focused on the education sector, to develop a LittleBigPlanet 2 teachers' kit for use in the classroom. The pack will feature levels themed around curriculum subjects including physics, maths, science, art and history and is designed to help engage students in these subjects.

Pretty neat, huh?

Hah, I was recently considering making some math/science levels. Kinda dropped the idea because it hardly be successful (after all, which parent is going let their kid study by playing a game), and I'd have very little fun making it.

Nice to see that Mm is adopting the idea of using this as a platform for interactive learning.

For the level, I would make it a lot more densely populated than reality. And asteroids would be ridiculously large in proportion to the stars, etc, so you could actually see them.

Oh, just got another cool idea. What if each player starts in different regions of the galaxy (not knowing where the other players are), and whoever is the last to get absorbed or whoever reaches a certain size wins.

I could make it so the larger you are, the slower you go, thus smaller players could escape larger players. Any other ideas?

I would of course make this mode optional, so if you just wanted to watch the galaxy form, you could jump into a DCS module and explore the level (still versus so players would get their own screen).

Well it sounds like the nice alternative to Katamary Damacy.
Im just litle bit affraid of the galaxy size - the level and thermo limitation are pretty strick when creating the Galaxy roject :-)

But it can be at least interesting. Inho definitely woth the try.

I haven't messed about with how many asteroids can exist at once, so when I find out, I can probably say with some certainty if this will fail. My original design was based on things getting destroyed as soon as it was too far from the player, and remit when player got near. I dunno how the PS3 will like maintaining everything without deleting it for this level to work properly.2011-03-07 07:45:00
