Midnight Revenge

Well, my latest level is done! No, it has nothing to do with mechs. Yes, it still makes use of needlessly complicated logic and contraptions to make what I hope will be a fun and interesting cinematic experience.

Play the intro level first if you want to see why your flight is suddenly invaded by an evil force

You earn a rank and bonus points based on how many lives you've saved throughout the course of the adventure. Save the flight attendant, both passengers, and land the plane safely in order to earn the highest rank.

Enjoy.

A big thanks to OCK and NinjaMicWZ for helping to test the level!

I had the privaledge of playing your latest level. I have to say that I was very impressed with your attention to detail from the airport to the airplane. In fact, working as an air traffic controller and a private pilot, I was both intrigued and interested from the get go. I do hope you make a part 2 of this level. Thanx for making such a fun and well designed level. In fact, why you're not getting more plays with hearts and smiley faces is mind boggling. Your level truly deserves a MM pick.2011-03-07 09:07:00

This was one of the coolest 'adventure' kind of things I've seen on the game so far. Has some really epic uses of cinematics, and it felt like Die Hard 2 meets the train sequence at the end of Resident Evil 2 (or the orobouros on the ship in RE5). It's probably the most action-packed blockbuster feel I've seen in a level, and some of the gameplay and puzzles is ultra creative... electric conduction = genius.2011-03-07 11:15:00

Wow, thanks!

I tried my best to recreate an airport/airplane feel from memory (with some creative liberties for gameplay purposes). This is the first time I make a mostly atmospheric/visual level, so I'm glad I seem to have hit the mark, and also glad most players seem to be enjoying the level so far.

Thanks!

I tried to come up with some unique ideas for the puzzles and bosses, and I probably took some cues from games and movies I liked for the atmosphere. I'm not sure anymore how I came up with the idea of using water to conduct electricity. I originally just wanted to have a section of the plane be on fire, and once that was done I wanted to add something extra to make it more interesting.

Glad you enjoyed the level.

I really liked it but there were a few times where I wasn't entirely sure what to do.

The first time I played it, I thought that when the monster first appears you were supposed to run away to the area behind the spawning blocks with the point bubbles and managed to get stuck in there because I accidentally pushed the block you move to get into that area back into position, which trapped me. I think a way of knowing that the blocks are damaging the monster, rather than just pushing him back so you can escape would have cleared up my confusion with that part.

I was also unsure about how to get past the gas that comes in through the hole at first, as it doesn't initially appear that the ceiling above it is grabbable and I thought that you were supposed to get past that part by jumping over the seats.

The white head that you have to grapple to damage on the final boss also confused me for a while, as I couldn't figure out how to damage him. I had grappled onto his head a few times but because I'd grappled onto his teeth, he took no damage and I initially discounted that as being the way to hurt the boss and thought it was just a way to dodge attacks. The purple laser might also take too many grapples to break, because it felt like I was stood there hitting the R1 button to break out for a long time.

The text instructions for landing the plane also came a little too late I felt. The instructions to level the plane out gently as you landed only really showed up when it was too late to take any advice from them. By that point the landing has either already gone wrong or you've landed the plane.

Overall though, I really enjoyed it and it had a very cool cinematic feel to it. The changing momentum outside the plane really helped to make that part feel like you were on the outside of a plane, rather than any other level.

I was in another persons pod when they entered this level so I didn't know the name or description before I started. It was fun trying to figure out the nature and scope of the level based on the set design and I kept being surprised by the expanding challenges and story throughout.

The initial encounter with the creature fun though the solid eyes and teeth seemed at odds with the gaseous body. Makes the creature a memorable.

We didn't rescue the person though it didn't occur to me at the time that we could, I thought his cries for help were more dramatic in flavor.

I liked that the challenges in the level didn't have their solutions broadcast to the player. (Though the last boss is one that I think could use a little clarification.) I had a sense of accomplishment as we found out how to cross the gas or to supply power to the door or how to hurt the final boss.

The level sets up the tension and velocity of the airplane very well from start to finish and there always seemed to be an urgency that made me rush about trying to do things as fast as I could. The rescue sequence with the Grapple thingy was very well done but the passenger leg go and fell off at the very end. (I think this is a bug based on some earlier comments made.)

After the save the passenger section we weren't clear on where we needed to go next and we swung around a bit on the underside and trying to avoid the creature that appeared in the rear until after one time we re-spawned on top the final bosses were there. (Maybe they were there earlier but I think the camera zone at the spawn point may not show that.)

The final fight took a lot of figuring out to finish. We saw quickly that grappling the top head was giving points but it wasn't consistent. (Grappling the teeth versus the head which we didn't realize.) We also go stuck under the cone a lot and we didn't figure out that the cone could be destroyed or what caused the cone to be triggered in the first place.

Lastly the landing the plane instructions did seem to be late in coming but also consistent with the actual situation. There are passengers trying to land the plane, you wouldn't expect them to know how to fly a plane or that the flight control operators on the ground would be able to provide a lot of instruction before hand.

I wasn't clear on who was operating the plane though on the descent. We were in a multiplayer game, so was player 1 controlling the plane, the closest person to a controlinator or what? I didn't know if I should relax and let player 1 try to land the plane or if by a checkpoint spawn timing issue I got assigned the task and should try not to crash. Either way I'm pretty sure we crashed.

This was a fun level that kept developing and getting worse, for the player, as it progressed. It did feel like a cinematic adventure with a backstory much deeper than what is overtly shown in the level. Good work on this.

I had a blast playing this today. From Twitter I'd got the impression it was going to be "just" a boss level but I couldn't have been more wrong. I loved the whole story angle and the way you set it up with the cinematic intro. Then the actual level itself was so varied with all the different challenges getting round the plane and rescuing the passengers (or not... *cough*) and you managed to create a real sense of drama. The water puzzle, in particular, was very cool and as Trindall said the gravity/momentum effect when you were outside the plane was a great touch - you really did feel you were hanging on for dear life.

I have to say that I got through the boss section by pure trial and error (mostly error, lol) but I'm determined to go back and have another go in a more scientific way. I thought all the different heads looked superb though.

And then just when I was feeling all smug at getting past the boss, I end up with a plane full of passengers to pilot back to safety. That was a great twist at the end, wholly unexpected but absolutely fitting. Needless to say, it all went horribly wrong and carnage ensued but that, of course, only adds to the replay value.

A really engaging level with lots of impact and drama and some excellent visuals. I had fun. A and a <3

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad everyone is enjoying the level (for the most part anyway lol).

I've just updated the level with a lot of fixes based on everyone's feedback.

-There are now hand prints on the baggage compartment handles to hint that they can be grabbed. One of the passengers early on also demonstrates that you can grab the handles by jumping up to grab them.
-Replaced taxi metal for a more subtle metal in the cargo hold and cargo compartment.
-The final passenger's AI is now fixed so she doesn't randomly jump to her death anymore, which makes her much easier to rescue.
-The landing sequence now doesn't start until you've read the instructions, and there is now a bit more info.
-Added a checkpoint closer to the boss (any closer would cause camera issues with multiplayer).
-The boss's cone of darkness attack now takes fewer hits to break and has cracks that appear to indicate that it's getting damaged.
-I removed the boss's invincibility frames while it was performing its cone attack since it seemed to confuse everyone, and I've also added a purplish light to indicate the boss's weak point.

When playing this level I was having flashbacks of your Midnight Train level. MT was your first LBP level, this is your first LBP2 level (full level, not something like Sack Mech which I also enjoyed!). Both have the word midnight in the title. Both take place in/on vehicles. Both have truly epic boss battles. Both are innovative to the fullest. The thing that I have always admired about you (and this applies to all my favorite creators) is that you are always pushing the boundaries, trying unique things, standing at the vanguard of creativity. This level is no exception!

I really can't remember the last time a level presented the player with so many original gameplay mechanics, I hope people fully appreciate the thought that went into everything you have here. Seemingly from the jump we are hit with a boss batlle. Boom, just like that. I thought it made great use of layer switching and really set the tone for what the player would be up against. Moving along to one of my favorite parts, the "tongue rescue". I have never seen anything like this before! Seriously man, well done and I like that it fit perfectly with the story you were trying to tell. Another great moment was the electricity puzzle. One word: genius. This is the sort of thing that should make other creators jump out of their seat and say "YES!". Fast forward to the outside of the plane and your "wind physics". Wow, you really went all out here! No idea how you did it I just know I love it. The boss? Epic! Cool to look at, nice attack patterns, challenging but not cheap, you really nailed it. Honestly? After all this landing the plane was just the icing on the cake

The only suggestions I would have had were regarding the cone attack of the boss and moving the checkpoint closer but you took care of that already. I love that fact that you added replay value with the rescue system and I will keep playing the level until I have saved everyone. Really great stuff, hearted and smiley.

Thanks for the comments!

It's funny you should mention Midnight Train. Although it is somewhat dated now, it's still my most successful level from way back when Rocket Cheetahs roamed the Earth, and it holds a special meaning for me. I wanted to make a sequel to it a while back, so I came up with the concept of "Midnight Plane - Ghost Hydra's Revenge", where the Ghost Hydra returns and wants to take revenge on Sackboy while he's on an airplane. Fast forward to today and I think my vision for it is finally realized.
In fact, the "tongue rescue" scene is a nod to Ghost Hydra's original action in Midnight Train, although not many people would have played the level to see the reference.

I try my best to come up with ideas that people might not have seen before, or might think are impossible to do. When I play other people's levels, what strikes me most is when the creator does something unique and memorable, or comes up with an unexpected and ingenious use of the tools. Hopefully I pass that along to other players as well and inspire them to come up with their own ideas and break the mold. Or at the very least, hopefully they have some fun.

Your level is great, I enjoyed it from beginning to end

The first thing that hit me was the accurate visuals, It really felt like I was in an airline and it really enhanced the whole cinematic aspect of ur level.. nicely done!!. I liked the way the doors worked (I found myself running back 'n' forth just to play around with the mechanics of them lol). I thought the choice of music and sounds were were spot on, u really matched the mood perfectly. I too liked ur ideas of the tongue part and the electrical puzzle, they really stood out and were highlights for me.. I love coming across sumthing new that makes me think "hey!! that's a new one!!, I've never seen that used in such a way before!!". The boss appearances were great and really made me feel like safety will never exist until they're gone.... where in turn lead to the exterior of the plane.. which was a great climax for a boss battle. The landing part and the rescue summary was a nice way to finish things.. I left ur lvl on a very high note . overall this was a very cinematic experience and I really liked the progression of events in ur level, they were a great build up to a great ending... very nice work!!

Great level, Gilgamesh! Here's what I liked to say about this level.

VISUALS:
The plane and monster designs and the layer glitch of the eclipse looked accurate and great. The non-playable characters are great too. The level also has breathtaking cut scenes.

SOUND:
Excellent use of interactive musics and sounds.

GAMEPLAY:
The optional objectives are great, despite that I failed to rescue the guy behind giant alien, a lady hanging on a plane, and everyone else (including me). The boss battle is really cool too.

OVERALL:
It's definitely worth a play. A yeah vote and a heart.

Good stuff. Will be a memorable level with all the nice little set pieces you have going on.
I didn't have any trouble, as you seem to have fixed the points stated above.
The boss was a little bit of a let down after the stuff before, I just jumped and spammed R1. The purple laser thing only happened once, pretty sure I didn't do much and it went away, where the sides hazardous?
The girl on the bottom of the plane fell down below me, and the plane exploded even though I -thought- I followed the instructions.
A nice example of a well rounded level.
I am thankful my LBP2 hearted list is growing.
