Does anyone else draw out parts of their level on paper when they are not creating?

I know I do. Having the level layed out in front of me is very helpful, and since I don't have to thin about how the obstacle, enemy, or boss will look and behave or move, I can concentrate more on the logic part of my inventions. Also, I think that it's fun to draw obstacles and label each material, as well as write little notes with how they will act. When I'm really bored, I even draw logic on my obsacles if it's simple stuff like player sensors attatched to movers. I only did this once for the level Born For Stress, a guitar-hero-alike level. I basicly made 4 pages of notes about the games logic. Took me 5 hours to write notes, 2 hours to correct them and organise them on computer, around 5 extra hours to build the logic inside the LBP level. Total time of thinking about it : more than 15 hours, counting the time to build the level, test it, record voice. Adding the time taken to create the songs... I do at times. I usually take a sketchbook with me when traveling and sketch out ideas for obstacles, puzzles and other level bits. Usually helps me fall asleep at night. lol I tend not to sketch out the whole level, but just ideas for small rooms and sections. I don't draw out plans of the level besides in my head, the way I tend to create is that I think of something and think of what I can use in LBP, picture it and think things up in my head and when I get something good I just go ahead and do it and when I get stuck then I just leave off. I don't usually draw out the entire level, but I always draw out a building before creating it so it can turn out just the way I want it to. Yeap I do I have several scrap papers around my living room and in note books. It helps me visualise the level before I start creating and gives me a better idea of where to start. ICan't really get fun down on paper, I find. AMEN! I have tesame feeling about this, you can draw gameplay on paper, but "fun" gameplay is something you have to do by experimenting in create mode IMHO. you got me, when i am at school, during the weeks, and especially when i am not at my dads on the weekends, if i didn't get to work out some piece of the level that is important, or i am not sure about, i sketch it on paper, including the logic, and, thanks to my handy dandy guide, i know what everything looks like ( logicwise ) all of the options, and the such. I am becoming a logic genius, and i am not even able to use the game the majority of the time. I just CANNOT wait for summer, the stuff i make during that month ( minimum i expect to be at my dads ) I am expecting to do more than i ever have before. Plus, i will be able to hang out with more people to help me do so. i do that sometimes, but in most cases, i just do that when im in the middle of a project need to think about something, like puzzles or contraptions, and i have a desk or something, then i draw some sketches, actually it helps a lot! planning levels is really good, (if you know how to plan it) because the level will make lots of more sense, and things will be way more balanced | 2011-03-10 20:52:00 Author: Unknown User |
I've done this for my levels in the past, but I do agree that it's not really necessary to draw out the entire level. (even though I've done this a few times, not all the way through mind you) I usually draw if I'm having trouble thinking of what to add next. It's also a nice idea to draw out any parts of a level that you aren't sure about.
