Hangout Levels (Am I the only one who would ever play these?)

Archive: 13 posts

I've already got one out called "The Chat Yard," but it got buried by violent things in the level showcase. I was thinking about making a few more, but it seems no one would play them.

Should I abandon the project, or was yesterday just a bad day to publish?

...a bit more about the project...
I was thinking it might be neat to have some really pretty looking places to hang out with ever-changing daylight "hours." ...because sometimes I don't really want to do levels, but I still like being with friends on LBP and just talking... and I want a cool place to do it. Anyway, in the level I already have out, I've got a pretty good light system where it cycles from day to night pretty seamlessly with sunset and sunrise each making pretty funky colors. I also tried to make it as 3D as possible, and I think I would continue that if I don't give up the project.

I think it's quite a good idea. It's not really something I'd use, but there is definitely a market for it. Lots of people love this sort of thing.

Perhaps you could incorporate little mini-games into the environment, to make it more interesting. So, in addition to all of the visual splendours, there would be arcade machines (pong, asteroids, worm, etc) too.

Also, I was thinking more along the lines of beaches, and pretty park-ish places.

Here are some pictures from the last one:

I mean, I guess an arcade would be possible, but I don't know how much thermo it would take up. I've tried making some arcade games, and they can get a bit complex when you go overboard... which I always do.

By no means would arcade games have to be complex. Simple games are often the most addictive. Anyone ever play the impossible game with that jumping block? Oh geeze. So much time wasted on that.

I personally wouldn't be drawn to something like a "hang out level", but I'm sure you aren't the only one to desire something like that. I'd try publishing on a Friday, too.

By the way, very well made level. Its very visually pleasing.

Hmm... I guess I'll consider trying an arcade.
If I can restrain myself enough to not make it ridiculously complex.

It sure seems like I'm the only one...

Thanks!

If you would add a basketball court, maybe a level link to a "Movie theater" Which would be a small short film, and you could always make a seperate level for the arcade, and place a bunch in there!2011-03-04 00:18:00

Ehh... My heart wouldn't really be in it.
Plus, that would take up too much space on my earth.

Yes, I have a friend who built a base for clan, and personally I find those annoying... But the way he built it... The way he built it, that was different, he had tons of different rooms and different things to do with your friends, it was pretty stunning, and I think that is what you should aim for! Make sure the level is versus so the player can explore!2011-03-04 21:26:00

Versus? I actually never thought of that. I didn't know it gave players the ability to not be all on the same screen.

@Leafy101: The link is here now. I deleted the old level to see if publishing on a different day would get me more plays.

Well in reference to your current level, the idea, if it did appeal, is a little bit let down by the fact it takes around 5-10 mins load + there's a 50/50 chance that it crashes the PS3.2011-03-06 17:27:00

Well the idea is great. But I remember I already wanted to try your level - it always froze during loading screen for me (not the console - I was able to quit LBP2, but game was stuck) - you mentioned you wasted all thermo, maybe it can be a reason and maybe you can check that?
It seems the game has problems with very complex levels that take too much memory. For example Sony vs Marvel vs Capcon - that level could actually completelly damage your game profile.

But regarding such levels in general - I have doubts people will go there and just chat. Some people may - but very few of them.
IMHO - if you want such level to be successfull - put there some stuff to do. Some 2player minigames (tic-tac-toe as example), or just some interactive physics stuff they can explore. Working See-Saws? Or such kind of stuff. Nothing complicated. Just make sure they want be stuck there with nothing to do.

It crashes the PS3? Crap. I'll have to cut down on the songs. D:

Edit:
So, I didn't want to have to do this, but I cut down the song amount to 23 as opposed to 79. It should be quick and snappy now.

... now how does a horror movie mansion hangout sound?
