Cool. I use to have that game. One thing I noticed, I would have thought you would make it a race. As I remember trying to beat my brothers time when I was a kid.2009-03-10 13:09:00

I did consider adding a race actually but never did. The score is currently based on successfully completing each obstacle. If you drop the ball it gets replaced but you won't receive the points bubbles for that obstacle at the end.

I might do that though now, it would be a nice update, thanks for the idea

I've played through your level a few times and wanted to provide some feedback on it.

I enjoy the visual style used in this level as it can look both clean and artistic when done well. It is similar to the white background with pencil drawing look used in ThommyTheThird?s Hard Simplicity level however this is taken a step further with the use of the colorful decorations in the background full layer.

I know that the artwork and engineering of the level was a collaborative effort and I think that whomever was in charge of the art design did a great job. There was always something interesting to look at in the level which cultivates a richer experience. This is important for this type of level as you really don't do anything except move to a challenge, stop for a bit, move a bit further to the next challenge, stop a bit and so on and so forth.

Since the player is not venturing through wide and varied landscapes in a short level such as this, then it is a good idea to bring those wide and varied landscapes to the player.

This isn?t a difficult level but it is not intended to be that way I believe. This is a level based on the spirit and mechanics of a small game wherein you navigate a small metal ball through a series of obstacles. I loved and coveted this game as a child, I didn?t have it when I was young but a friend did, and though I never remembered its name I knew instantly that is was the same game as I started this level.

None of the challenges in this level are over difficult nor require feats of imagination but again it is based on a game designed for children. It is a level in the form of homage and the obstacles from the original can?t all be replicated in LBP they are mostly all there in spirit if not in form.

The challenges starting area is right next to the start point so you can begin as soon as you enter. You are able to move quickly from stage to stage without much fuss and for those that aren?t interested in the challenges can still walk through the whole level, it is not very long, and see all of the interesting game elements and art work.

The challenges themselves are straightforward enough that you do not ever take too long in any one of them and a player can advance to the end in a timely fashion.

--If you do not lift the crane arm before you move it then the crane arm will snap off. You know this, of course, as you make a specific note about it in the game. Is it your intention for this to happen or is raising the arm before moving it just the workaround to a problem you haven?t fixed yet?

If you could move the crane arm without worrying about the electrical block then there wouldn?t be much to do at this stage but when it does fail, and the crane arm is gone, the level is not really complete-able and you must restart to continue. This is more of a game flow issue than anything else.

--Toward the end where you move the bubble to the catapult via the trolley you are able to jump up to the back full layer one of two ways. You can jump on the catapult then to the left to the trolley. Or, though it is more difficult, you can jump on the trolley pull handle and then up to the track.

From this back layer you can run left, through a challenge to the place where you have the domino looking objects. (The ones where you are pushing the ball up each level.) If you run a bit around the first, second or third domino there is a hole in the floor where you can fall through to the empty level bottom. I?d recommend covering up this hole as that may be easier than trying to prevent a player from getting to the back layer.

I noticed the music quite a bit as I played this level. It is a good choice for the mood of the level and gave me the feeling of a whimsical atmosphere. The music and art design bring a lot of the zany to the level which was fun to look at and I enjoyed the combination. Though I wouldn?t have connected the wacky, goofy atmosphere of this LBP level with the game that I played as a child but that is just me.

I enjoyed the level and played through it a few times. It was fun and relaxing and I wasn?t able to really break anything which made the game experience more enjoyable. There doesn?t seem to be a lot of reason to compete for a high score as there are so many bubbles given away at the end that the delta between your score and the next highest can be very great at times. (And it looks like the level was abused a bit to allow some players to get higher scores than originally intended.)

However replay-ability isn?t high on my needs list and I enjoyed the trip down memory lane, the gameplay and the artwork enough that I was smiling and happy when I finished. Good work on this level.

Thanks for your little review Trindall, much appreciated

The game is indeed intended to be a replication of the classic Screwball Scramble game and hence is designed to match that as closely as possible rather than provide novel or difficult tasks.
The art design was done in collaboration with "Samalump" who is my girlfriend The look and the music are designed to be of it's own characteristic as the original game design is very bland and would make for a much less appealing level.

The electric block in front of the crane is deliberate to make that obstacle have more purpose. I do accept though that a solution may be needed to overcome the need to restart if it breaks.

The place you have found to fall out of the level needs to remain as that is one of a few ball drains. These are in place with sensors to detect a dropped ball and produce a new one as well as close of the release of points and prize bubbles for that obstacle.
I expect that 99.9% of people would not try to venture into the back of the level like that but I'll have a look at blocking access.

I am thinking of adding an optional race to the level to offer more of a challenge and perhaps replay value though it is a shame that the current high scores will essentially still get in the way of that as a leaderboard accomplishment.

Thanks again for your comments
