8 Bit Cowboys! Sprite based shooting adventure.

Archive: 51 posts

Ah... It feels like a lifetime the amount of time thats gone into this. Please give it a try and tell me what you think!
the main menu should hopefully have you hooked alone (as its a bit different)
time consuming animations in all!
its possible to walk up and down the screen kind of like streets of rage but you use this for dodging bullets.
Have Fun!

Sweet level dude! I really liked how you made the bar kind of like an intro menu type thing.

I loved the simple little stick cowboy guy, he had simple but effective animation which made this adventure all the more charming.
I like the snakes, and I like the shooting mechanics. You did a good job making it grainy as if watching an old film.

Now the negative, I couldn't kill the guys hiding behind the rock, not sure if you could or not. And they got a bit annoying too.
Also the knife guys were rather slow and easy, I was expecting to be surprised by one, but I wasn't. But they were a nice touch!

I don't get this, i was just about to make it onto the front page of cool levels (i was moving up the ranks and was one away) and then its just disappeared? how does this system work!?

On LBP.me im just before "Chicken Flickin ! By GlitchFish "

But in the game the level doesn't show up.
well that should knock me off pretty quick if people cant choose to play it from ingame lol

Edit* ok it seems there is a strange blind spot at the end of the cool levels page as i have moved down and appeared and chicken flickin has now dissapeared. Strange!

This was a great little game. My friend was astounded as he watched me play it, and to be honest I was pretty impressed as well. It really feels like an old-timey Atari title!

One thing you might be able to do to lower your thermo requirements (if you haven't already!) is have a moving piece of holo emit the enemies - if they're all created from a single emitter, the thermo will only count one of them and you'll be able to cheat it a bit. As long as the thermo doesn't fill during play mode, the emitter will still work and your enemies (and other repeated objects, like the snakes) might not take up such a large chunk.

You got a yay and a heart from me.

Great! Thanks for the advice! I did try a few things with emmiters but I didn't get the result I wanted, I'm gonna have a rework to see what I can achieve!
And if you other chaps like it please tell me what I could do to improve! Thanks

Hahaha it's just like the good ol Atari 2600! Awesome. Hopefully you'll develop a part 2 soon.
The only bad part about this level is the forced level link loop that occurs, that could get alot of people really mad.

As far as I am concerned this is a front of cool pages worthy level as long you fix that level link deal.

Wow this took me back, I felt like I was actually playing a nes game or something, I loved this level, sometimes I hard a time knowing how to hit the baddies, but everything else was perfect, the background, the music wow, the Dialogue, the story, how the level works, the movement and everything this level is amazing, It deserves alot more plays 2011-03-05 15:26:00

holy interesting level you got there!
i loved how everything looked it got a unique feeling! even the controlls - sadly it was a lil bit moving more than i would like him x3 (means he stops walking slow but i guess that problem is only on the start thing.
i had a small problem seeing a story line, i guess it would not hurt to do a small animation first? to introduce the player why he is going and shoot around? x3 (maybe thats just me )

a few things i would like to help with ideas:
need music on the very beginning (maybe make it stop when the piano starts playing)
you should disable the popit menu - its annoying when you get hit cause of it
a bit hard to see which "layer" the enemies are maybe some markings on the ground to help?

i wanted to say that the level is a bit short but than i remembered THAST is my OWN fault haha x)
but you could smother the go in to goal animation a lil bit. looks like BANG zisch dong x3 (wich fits in the western topic lol) but

all i can say is this is interesting! and it looks good!
if you increase the controll feelings and "layer" thing i explained earlier i think that could get mm picked if you are lucky
also maybe a small animation for walking inwards and outwards?

PS: i would place a big little bit darker than background "exit" over the door so everyone knows it sooner!

EDIT: i replayed it some times:
the enemies don't change layers right? if you are skilled you can just run around them
also i wonder how to shoot the in background enemies.

replayed it!
now i got a bug i can not go to play mode. the controllinator missed me.
(good walking animation now!)

EDIT: i needed 2 replayes than it worked again.

btw i published the whole text script in my thread if you like to help with my english... that would be nice!

EDIT2: hm to shut down the popit is easy :3 its just a tweek hun ^^
or do you got a reason for the popit? if yes. than why not build this option on a button w/o the popit menu?

i'm working on fixing the issue with the controlinator. It basically happens when the player is moving left or right when the game starts. will be fixed in next update.
Theres so much logic involved whenever i attempt an update it takes YEARS!

Good level! Haven't seen any other like this one yet so good work. I don't want to think about how much work you have to do in the background to get it all those animnations working nicely like that.

To be honest i can't fault this level much, the only things i that i noticed were the collision detection of the enemy bullets on the character. They were very hard to dodge as they can hit any part of you, so even if you move down to dodge it'll still get you in the head, or if you move up it'll hit your feet. Maybe i'm just rubbish at dodging however.
Their range extends from off the screen so you suddenly have bullets flying towards you and you can't see whats shooting you.
Last thing, the guys that hide behind stuff at the top and lean out to shoot you, I assume you can't shoot them and you just have to avoid them?

Apart from that very good level!

Hey this level ROCKS!

Found no negative points here, i really enjoyed being a cowboy
The music was perfect.

Maybe you can install a boss battle in this one or the next part? would be awsome

Really good level but i did find it a bit hard maybe adding some extra lives or more health would make it easier (but still challenging). Really enjoyed the music too so i was really pleased when got the music as prizes at the end The first bit in the bar is really well done too, like that you could get the guy to play the piano 2011-03-06 19:29:00

Thanks for your feedback on my level!
This was really fun! I love all the custom animations and music. It was pleasantly challenging too. One problem I noticed, playing with 2 players, was that the snakes didn't refill the health of player 2. Actually, the first snake he used worked, the rest didn't so he died. Still, overall a really awesome level, I'm looking forward to part 2!

Awesome 8-bit feeling in this game! I enjoyed very much being a 8-bit cowboy shooting baddies everywhere heh. Just 1 suggestion, make the enemies faster, at least the ones that tries to stab you with a knife, to make it more challenging.

Please play my game and give me any feedback about it! My level is: http://lbp.me/v/y77btq

Thanks!

I'm going to put some work into updating this a bit later today, it's gonna take me a while. I was told actually that this game reminds someone of an old atari 2600 game called outlaw.
i've decided i'm going to recreate outlaw at some point, as i already seem to have most of the components i need! hah

arg! i just realised the last update i did makes it so that when you die the character stays there. its just impossible to change anything without something else going wrong! lots of fixes in the works at this second, should be republished in the next hour or so.2011-03-07 17:22:00

OK update is now published,
Fixes include:

Characters now disappear again when killed (had a bug from first update)
All overlapping animations have now been fixed such as jumping and shooting etc.
Knifing enemies are now EVIL, they are faster, stronger and have a better aim for you and some come from the front
and other various additions with logic etc.

The controlinator positioning at the start is still very iffy, and i'm having deep thought about how i'm going to get it to work properly.
at the moment if your playing 2 player player 1 will be player 2 and player 2 will be player 1 so i'll work something out.

Feedback would be great Thanks!

Hey i just finished your level and i really enjoyed it. Visuals are great and very unique and i really liked the gameplay too. The only bad thing i can say is that it can be tricky to hit the enemies since its quite difficult to line up your shots and this can get frustrating but this is not a big problem. Other than that this is pretty much perfect. Oh and the music is great too keep up the good work!2011-03-08 19:59:00

Awesome level! It has a great 8 bit feeling.

VISUALS:
The level has excellent background and animation. The menus around the game is very accurate too.

SOUND:
Brilliant custom music, it has a wild west feeling. Same goes with your other custom music from your gallery level, "Pinball Wizard", which I remembered playing the original one in "Rock Band 2".

GAMEPLAY:
The usage of the controlinator is really good. The A.I. of the enemies are good too, but I think you need make the enemies that follow you a bit slower, because it's a bit hard to avoid them.

OVERALL:
Great game. A yeah vote, a heart, and a positive review.

Heya, FriedGoat!

What an amazing level! I make a poor cowboy, though, so I couldn't manage to get very far.

Like everyone else said, the visual style you went for is amazing in its own right, of course, but you pulled it off really well. When I started the level, I thought for sure it was just a cutscene, but no! The game was actually lollerskating holographic 8-bit. I would definitely like to try it with a buddy.

For polish, I recommend cleaning up your dialogue. They really hurt what was otherwise a very professionally done and slick level. I would also consider endlessly spawning enemies. A level with a design and concept as unique as yours shouldn't have to end because of thermometer constraints. I would play an 8-bit cowboy survival challenge forever.

Again, good work! Looking forward to seeing your other levels!

Played!
Really nice retro feeling, the music is awesome
I loved a lot also the saloon intro and the interactions
The gameplay is good(specially the vertical movement is well calibrated), i don't get why people ask to slow the knife guys, are ok as they are... just go straight, gain distance and shot
The limited colour selection is perfect

Good job dude, tell me when chapter 2 is out

Hi, FriedGoat

I tried your level and it is excellent! I love old style games and you created great remake of old style shooters! I love it! very cool beginning in the bar (with very cool animation and dialog system) and very interesting and amazing gameplay further in the battles! I love every part of this level! Very good animation, decorations and design! Great work! And very good music! All these details creates excellent gameplay with great experience ! Thank you for such great creation! Will wait for part 2! And will wait for something new from you!

P.S. Also I gave you the heart as creator! And will announce your level on Russian LBP community Fun site - littlebigrussia.ru. You totally deserve it!

I like the concept a lot. It's original. The graphics and music etc are awesome as well. Good job on those. The game was a bit hard, not a bad thing I guess. Sometimes it seemed as if I couldn't kill the enemies for a small amount of time, aside from that everything worked perfectly. Nice job. 2011-03-11 15:47:00

8-Bit Cowboys Part 1 *Updated (1-2 Player Only)
Score: 9.3/10
Rating: {:star::star::star::star::star:}
By: FriedGoat/FrIeD-GoAt

Wow great level here!

Story: N/A/10
Not really much of a story, no problem.

Music/SFX Choice: 9.5/10
The music fit in great! There could of been just a couple more SFX though.

Appearance: 9.8/10
It's great for what it is. It's a 8bit-based level, and you executed that great! Everything fit in to the theme of 8bit, so great job here!

Gameplay: 9/10
Original concept, fun, and works great in 2 player mode. I was actually worried because the 2nd player doesn't come in until after you leave the saloon. I was a little confused why snakes give you life though, that's why I put you down to a 9. I mean, do snakes give you life? lol. Anyways, it was a blast to play through and I was sad when it ended.

Overall: 9.3/10 (not an average)
Very well done. I'd play it again. This level works great and looks superb. I couldn't squeeze a <3 out because it didn't really hold a superb wow factor. Don't get me wrong, the level was great, but I only heart levels I'd play over and over again. I really hope you make a second part to this level!

F4F: This level (http://bit.ly/fXzegc) please. Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback earlier! I have to say your premise fro this level was GREEEAAAT! I loved the beginning at the saloon. The little interactivity was cute. The visuals were a fun little throwback to the retro ages. The gameplay was simple and easy to use. Although I couldn't finish since the challenge level was tough! but I'm guessing it would be easier with a 2nd player. :] All in all it was a nice throwback! Yayed!2011-03-13 17:57:00

Played today and it was quite great: i liked the retro look and the music, the enemies were nice even though the knife enemy was maybe a bit too fast. I believe that the diagonal shot wasn't really used much so having some enemy in high position would imncrease the variety. The only problems were the short length and the lack of a boss, even though i know that the thermo stopped you from doing more.

Great work .

Right, Scraped myself out of bed, still feel pretty terrible but i've managed to improve a few things and update the game, I've added Arial targets now, birds will fly by and can be shot for big points (quite difficult) they look good though because they fly through the clouds , I've improved some dialog and also changed the way that the controlinators work at the start in the background. The player 1 and player 2 should be in the correct order and there shouldn't be any trouble with the game not starting 2011-03-22 15:16:00

I wish I could give this level 4-5 hearts!! I love the gameplay, I love the music, I love the artwork and backgrounds, and that I am currently holding the highscore haha. Great job with the holo movement and the characters are interesting and worth reading. This level definitely deserves 'cool level' status. I can't wait for part 2.2011-03-28 13:47:00

Hey FriedGoat, thx for your review, now here is mine in return:

pro
+ Unique idea
+ Easy handling
+ Nice background

con
- The only negative point i have is the aiming. It worked at the beginning very well, but when the enemies are in the background it is quite hard to hit them and it failed when one of the swordman was very close to me.

All in all it is a really good and unique level with only some little issues that arent really serious. Great Job!

A very nice idea, and some great music to boot! I like the atari look of it all, almost expecting to free some nakes indian ladies at the end of it

The gameplay works, but its not perfect:

-diagonal shooting is huge pain, also why cant I shoot straight up?
-snake eating needs a button, but why? It would be easier just to walk over them.
-knivers cant be killed when they are close. Now this is a problem thx to the emitting system not emtiing when something is in the way so you cant really do something about it directly: You could make the sides of your cowboy dangerous to enemies when you hit R1 or you could give the cowboy a faster walk so he can escpae from the knifers, or let the knovers turn back after they hit the player once. These solutions should stop the unfair death when a knivers gets to close so I cant escape or kill it.

It also quite short. I cant fathom why this takes up so much thermo. Are you emitting the enemies? using one emitter? If not, this should really help. Simply use tags to emit them when necisary.

Like the premise, loved the intro menu and great style and AWESOME music. Would you make me some awesome bossmusic? I would really love having custom music for my level but I suck at it.

Also F4F is in my sig.

Ok this was amazing. Really nice gameplay mixed with great animations i felt like i was a little 8 bit cowboy dealing justice.

Great intro and music wish to see more of this. A nice horse and cart chase would be great.

I'm creating an 8 bit game myself so this was great inspiration never thought of making thelevel layout look 3D even though it was a flat area.

If you want to please play any level in my sig but seeing as i couldn't give you any better feedbak theres no real need.

Ha just played the piano AWESOME.
