Layer switching issue

Archive: 6 posts

Ok, so I've got this wizard character in my level and you can emit a force field for a short period of time.

I've made the forcefield out of invisible, electrified holo (1 layer thick) and it works just fine. The holo also has an LED light stuck to it on the thin layer in front of it to give the forcefield some extra visuals. The problem is that when it's emitted, I can go to the back layers, but I can't come forward.

I don't see why this is happening, as the light is in front of the player on a thin layer, and there's nothing obstructing it. But the light is definitely the issue, as I've deleted it and it works fine.

But with just the electrified holo the forcefield looks a little boring. Anyone know a workaround for this or maybe another way to have something emit light without actually emitting a light?

EDIT....

Ok so I figured out the problem. It's not the light that's not allowing me to come forward. It's the fact that the material being emitted is lethalized. I've tried fire, plasma, etc. and it's all the same. This sucks! I really like the look of the forcefield I've made.

Anyone have any thoughts on a workaround for this?

Have you tried using one of the lights that behave as a decoration instead of occupying a thin layer? Such as a lightbox or the LED light bulb?2011-03-03 04:56:00

you could do more holo to create a custom light animation inside the field since you can pass through holo2011-03-03 06:28:00

Like Dr. C said, just use the LED bulb that's like a sticker. Easy as that.2011-03-03 06:35:00

Exactly. It is found in your popit's materials, second page, in the Lights category. You can tweak it to be invisible (it still creates the light effect) but you can move through it regardless. It can get a little heavy on the game's performance if you use a whole bunch of these overlapping each other, though.

An extra suggestion of mine would be to look into stickering your holo shape. For lightning effects, for instance, I first place a black sticker on my shape, so it becomes invisible; then I use the lightning sticker ('environment' category, IIRC) liberally to create a beam of electricity. A sticker's dark parts hide holo, while bright parts show holo. For your forcefield, you could use a radial gradient sticker (from LBP1 I think) on a full circular shape of holo, suggesting a a glow. Note, however, that the sticker only shows the holo as a thin layer (a flat surface, not 3D), regardless of whether the shape occupies a thick layer.

Hey guys. Thanks a ton for the suggestions.

I had no idea you could use stickers as alpha maps. I'll definitely give this a go when I get home. And the LED decoration sounds like it'll do the trick!
