Wow, no one else is excited for this? I guess I am one of the few who spent part of their childhood in a dingy theater lobby feeding the MK arcade machine quarters

The thing I love most (besides MK going back to it's brutal, bloody roots) is the strong emphasis on the single player game. Here is a vid of the new Challenge Tower which will have 300(!) unique sp challenges. Not to mention the story mode for each character which is given a slight teaser in the second vid:

I can't wait for this! It is going to be awesome, since it reminds me a lot of the old MK games, which were the best. And Kratos actually seems like a great addition to the PS3 version of the game.2011-03-07 21:35:00

The challenge tower looks amazing, it has alot of really cool challenges and some what not but Funny XD
in the video, one challenge was Mileena wants to give scorpion a teddy bear lol and since scorpion doesnt want it, they fight to death that just made me lol

Im super curious about the last mission, they talk about it like its something epic..hmmm, You think chuck norris or jackie chan will be up there waiting?

lol, Sub-Zero takes off his mask and it's Chuck Norris, Scorpion removes his and it's Steven Seagal lmao. But yeah, the challenge tower looks amazing, might dethrone Soul Caliber on Dreamcast as my favorite single player content in a fighting game

Same here, Soul Calibur always had one of the best stories in fighting games.

Im so curious about the story in this one, Supposdly its Raiden comes back from the future to warn everyone of everything that happened in the future (Past Games, Dragon king, death of liu kang etc) But thats just rumors, ive yet to looked that up.

And if they would do that about Steven seagal and chuck norris XD
well idk all I know is if that would actually happen, I will pause the game, lay down on the floor and laugh sooo hard for hours and hours, good lord.

But im curious as why they would show Goro in the last mission box...

So much hype for this game, people are probably ignoring it cause MK Vs DC wasnt as good..but this game will definatly put MK back up there, without a doubt.

Edit* Has anyone seen Kun Lao's Fatality?...jeez thats some crazy stuff, look it up

The demo is so awesome! Just finished building my arcade stick yesterday and tested it out with the demo, works like a charm. They should bring back babyalities and animalities lol.2011-03-09 07:33:00

Yeah, I saw the vid a couple of months ago, it was definitely a "ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?" moment lol. So brutal, I LOVE it!

They should bring back babyalities and animalities lol

That is the one thing they should NOT do. It is the one thing long-time MK fans agree on as being the start of the franchises decline, all these silly gimmicks. The reason why fans are so excited for this is because it is taking MK back to it's roots, no BS, just hardcore bloody kombat. The few additions they have made (X-ray attacks, wow) make sense and actually add to the MK experience. Also, the Challenge Tower is where we will see a lot of these crazy ideas and they have a place in that mode but not the core fighting experience. Looking forward to the demo

My bad, I put lol instead of the sarcastic sackgirl. I also do not want them to add those in. I am all about bringing MK back to its roots and I think they are doing so, based on playing the demo. Loving the fatalities.

I quit playing Mortal Kombat games after Trilogy. Any after that were just kind of not fun for me. I keep hearing this one is going back to it's roots. Sounds cool. The idea of having weapons was cool, but the games still weren't as cool as the old ones. No animalities or Babalities? That's fine but what about Brutalities?2011-03-09 17:03:00

For all those who do not have PS PLUS the demo is up! The game is amazing, meets all my expectations, MK is BACK! I actually like playing as every character on offer which is unheard of for a fighting game. Having trouble doing some of the fatalities but practice makes perfect I guess. Love the x-rays, so brutal, so satisfying 2011-03-16 22:10:00

lol, Johnny Cage's victory pose was one of the most amusing things in the entire demo The trailer after you beat the demo is insane, April 21 can't come soon enough!

I say, does anyone agree Noob Saibot is due to a name change?
(I kid, Noob kicks major behind!)

I hope he has his teleportation move, that's one of the best combo making moves, and one of the best moves in general if you ask me.

Glad they have Cyrax, Sektor and Smoke too, that was my main team way back then, sometimes replacing Smoke or Cyrax with Noob, I was almost undefeated with them back where I lived.

Noob Saibot looks amazing with this one, been playing the demo way to much lately lol, cant wait for the game, I hope You get to unlock more fatalities though, that would be the only thing I wish to see improved.

Other than that the game is amazing.

I was just happy to see Baraka in the trailer, he was my favorite character back in the day. Then again, everyone in the demo was so fun to use and watching vids of other characters has me excited to try everyone out. Check out this vid, Jax is looking godly (got to love that super-man punch lol):

I agree that it would be great to have 2 fatalities per character but I doubt we will see that, especially since there seem to a bunch of stage fatalities and the x-rays are just as cool and cinematic. Man, I can hardly wait for this game

I played the demo today, this looks pretty good. Never really played MK, I usually play Tekken and Soul Calibur for fightng games. I was reading about the single player challenges they are adding, that pretty much sold me. Is there a complete roster for this somewhere...wanted to look over the characters.2011-03-19 21:27:00

I used to play a lot of Tekken and Soul Caliber myself, well, pretty much any fighting game when arcades were still popular lol (Kilik and Eddie Gordo were who I mained in each title). As for your roster question:

Thanks spider, I had no idea.

Well thats a thumbs up, I know alot of MK fans are Metal heads, and most music I heard (So far) is techno/electro like, this would be awesome, as we could fight a match playing our fav music

Would get players super pumped while playing.
This same thing was in NFS I think, its a great thing, glad to see it incorpotated here.

gotta love the classic, never gets old, that theme has stayed with me ever since the first time I heard it.

For those who played the demo, is it me, or is Johny Cage insanely annoying on expert?, he keeps repeating tbe crotch move over and over lol.

Hmmm, maybe he just has an affinity for nuts? I have not tried playing on expert yet...

Speaking of the crotch move I figured out a pretty strong 5 hit combo: 3 hit punch combo with square, crotch punch, uppercut. The timing for the crotch punch needs to be quick to register as a 4th hit. I don't think the uppercut registers as 5th hit but it does not matter since opponent is stunned. You could pretty much finish it any way you want but uppercut is powerful. Have to play around with flip kick and see if I can start air juggle instead for massive damage

Lol, you know its funny how I did the move on milena and she reacted the same way? I thought wtf isnt she a female?...., lmao anyway.

Yeah its pretty challenging on expert, especially Scorpion and Johny cage, cant wait to see what its gonna be like in the game. (You can bet liu kang is gonna be a pain in the a.. on expert) I can already Imagine that.

Im getting used to using Sub Zero, Juggling takes practice I notice you have to study those combos very well, somehow I manage to get like sometimes 2-3 hits on air, juggle.

I noticed the character levels in the game, Like for example its not so hard to do combos with scorpion.
And for sub zero its actually hard cause hes slower in this game (for some unknown reason). But with practice and using him right you can do some pretty crazy stuff.

Its kinda like in Street Fighter, using ryu is easy but using characters like M.Bison actually take more practice, im not sure if theres such thing in this MK but I hope not, that way Anyone can win and its a fair fight you know? Cause I kinda hated that fights were predictable...

For Example,
someone in Street fighter using Ryu and the other person using C.Viper.
Or in Soul Calibur someone using Talim and the other uses Sigfried or Ivy. It kinda make the fights seem un-balanced and un-fair, I hope this isnt in MK and instead everyone just has a different style.

Basicly this would be better in a way, cause not everyone has the same style in playing fighting games, and sometimes we wont use our Fav Character cause we think (hes to slow for this fight).

But then again, in a way I can admit its not really a bad thing...I guess it makes the game have alot more diversity in fights and characters,
a Good example is Super Smash Bros.

On Another topic, anyone remember the Konquest mode I think it was called..it was like a Free Roaming/RPG kind of thing, it was actually pretty good, not sure if they would bring that back cause I did see a mode called Story (not the ladder)..im super curious about it...

OK so 4 days left (officially, some already have their copies, might have mine tmrw) and we know a lot more then we did a few weeks ago:

- multiple fatalities per character confirmed, must be unlocked in Krypt but you can use pre-unlocking (just wont show up in menu)

- King of the Hill mode revealed, very cool take on online multiplayer (will post vids soon, posting from phone).

- Alt Kostumes confirmed, unlockable in Krypt by beating Arcade Ladder with any given character (classic costumes based on pre-order for now...)

- Kratos is looking godly *wink* look up some vids to see why

- Training mode similar to challenge rooms in SSF4 and MvC3

- Noob Saibot's fatality is the most insane thing you will see all year, I promise

The wait is killing me! Could this dethrone SSF4 as my favorite fighter this gen? Quite possibly

EDIT:

Got my copy from Amazon yesterday. The story mode is actually pretty enjoyable...a first for a fighting game; they seems to have put a lot of effort into it.

I'm assuming there is a way to block/avoid X-Ray attacks? Otherwise they seem kinda broken as they take no effort to pull off? Don't really like these anyway...the animation is too long and the same every time (per character); I think the game would be better without them.

The gore is pretty over the top, it doesn't bother me and I knew what I was getting...but I'd probably turn it off given the option, it's just a distraction. Also, whomever designed the faces for the female characters should be fired...

The Krypt is a horrible/awkward unlock interface...but something happened there that made me laugh so I'm willing to overlook the overall klunkyness of the first person controls.

Been playing this every night for the past 3 days, here are some thoughts:

OK, let's get the "kredentials" out of the way. I am 29, been playing MK from the start, fond memories of dumping quarters into machines (Pizza Pizza, Fairview Mall Cineplex) and later spending half my childhood playing Mk2 on SNES (slight exaggeration lol). I have owned almost every single console ever released and was the ultimate arcade rat as a kid. I have spent countless hours playing any fighting game worth mentioning (Street fighter series, Tekken series, VF series, Soul Calibur series, Rival Schools, BlazeBlue, Killer Instinct, Dead or Alive, Samurai Showdown, MvC etc etc etc. I bought both SF4 and SSF4 and will likely buy the Arcade Edition in June (yeah, Capcom loves suckers like me). I regard SSF4 as the perfect fighting game (and SF as the king of fighting games) and worth of all the critical acclaim it has received. I bought MvC3 day 1 and have barely played it... Why do I mention all this? So my opinion can be put into context. So I say this: WITHOUT QUESTION, Mortal Kombat is the best fighter this gen.

It begins with the kontent. Let's think about some of the great SP content that we have seen in fighting games past. World Tour mode in Street Fighter Alpha 3. Kumite mode in VF4, the many cool modes in Soul Calibur and Tekken games (Soul Calibur on Dreamcast in particular was very special in this regard). Still, none of those hold a candle to the sheer amount of options and variety - all of it of the high quality! - that Mortal Kombat has. It is mind-boggling just how much the team at NetherRealm put into this, shocking that they went to such lengths and cared so much about reviving this klassic franchise. Every other developer take note, THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT! One thing every review agrees on, MK is the new standard for fighting game content.

After going through a very thorough training mode I hopped into the Story. WOW! I am now playing an interactive movie full of great moments featuring all of our favorite MK characters. I am astonished that so much thought went into this. Breaking things down into chapters is a great way to keep the player engaged and flesh out the many characters. It also lets the player mess around with a lot of characters they might never even think of choosing and provides the opportunity to find a new favorite. I love that we get to see a lot of alt costumes too. Don't want to spoil but there are a lot of cool alts At times there are fights that can be challenging (2v1) but with each loss you should learn something new and apply it in the next match. Isn't that what all great fighting games require? Learning from your mistakes, improving your technique? I mention this because this aspect has been unfairly criticized by one of our more beloved gaming sites (extreme sarcasm *cough* IGN...). Some reviews have stated the story lasts 8-10 hours(!!!) and after spending 4+ I got the trophy for completing 50% of the story so it seems like that is accurate. Think about that for a second, 8-10 hours full of cinematics, kombat and a ton of laughs too. THIS IS A FIGHTING GAME!

Next we have the Challenge Tower and again, I am blown away. The sheer creativity that went into this insane and provides yet another unique way to enjoy Mortal Kombat. There are plenty of cool moments from shooting zombies with Stryker to only being able to damage your foe when he stands in the "cone of light" with Nightwolf to literally using your body parts as weapons with Sub-Zero. Every challenge is different from the last and after completing over 60 stages (of 300) I have not really seen any repetition. I know there are a ton of surprises ahead and each time I complete a challenge I am excited about what will happen next!

In every single game mode you earn koins which can be spent in the Krypt. Now what they did here is so above and beyond what you would expect that it really can't be praised enough. Essentially it is (another) game within the game where you travel the landscape in first person mode and explore the many grisly sights while using your koins to unlock additional kontent. This ranges from fatalities, costumes, artwork, music tracks and a bunch of other stuff. The Krypt also has it's own surprises and I suspect as time goes on more easter eggs will be discovered. NetherRealm could have easily made a simple menu system for the Krypt or a slot machine-style interface but no, they went the extra mile and I really appreciate that.

Now all of this would mean nothing if the core fighting mechanics were not fun and nuanced enough for players to be encouraged to master their favorite characters and keep playing. This is possibly the best thing about this reboot, the kombat rocks. The MK series was generally looked upon by Tekken, SF fanboys as inferior and gimmicky. They thought it was all about the blood and gore but lacked any real substance (and, for the most part, they were right). All that has changed. Here we have a system that is both accessible and yet super deep for those willing to put the time into it. There are layer and layers and layers of strategy to explore and as with any great fighting game, knowing thy enemy can often mean the difference between victory and defeat. The super meter plays a big role here. You can use it for enhanced moves, you can use it to break combos, you can use it for gloriously devastating x-ray moves that will remove a nice chunk for your opponents health. In the same vein of Street Fighter 4's Ultra's, baiting your enemy into using the x-ray and then dodging, blocking, countering it with your own adds to the mental game and knowing what type of x-ray your opponent has is crucial (the range, whether it is unblockable etc). This is a legitimate fighter that stands toe-to-toe with the best and I predict will move into tournament level territory.

There is a whole lot more I have to say but I need to get back to work now lol. Will be adding more thoughts in the coming days. Needless to say, this is a must-buy for fighting game fans and could even potentially appeal to those who do not traditionally like fighters, it's just that good. Nice to see the game has received some perfect scores, it deserves it

As a complete newcomer to Mortal Kombat I agree that it's definitely a must-buy for fighting game fans. There is no question that they have set the new standard for single-player features, just tons of stuff to do...

I'm still trying to decide on a character. Right now I'm leaning towards Jade...she seems pretty noob friendly. And I guess I need a 2nd for tag battles (yay for tag battles!).

So normal high/low blocks can cancel these (if it's not unblockable)? It's pretty difficult to tell when the x-ray is being used (other than seeing the opponents meter is full)...you don't get much warning. The pace of this game seems faster than what I'm used to...maybe I'm just getting old.

I had to play as Jade during the story mode last night and she did not really click for me but the great thing is we have so many characters to choose from and each is very unique to play as. The first day I played a lot with Baraka since he was my main from MK2 but he just wasn't doing it for me. Scorpion has always been a favorite of mine and I am really starting to perfect his tactics and experiment with different combos. Jade is pretty noob friendly, as is Kitana. A lot of people are falling in love with Stryker, I have not tried him yet so we shall see

Yes, high/low guard can block x-rays leaving the attacker open to counters (no greater feeling then countering an xray with an xray!). However, some xrays are unblockable (Jax, Shao Khan, Kano) which is why it is so important to have basic knowledge about every character. Now, it is very easy to bait an unblockable xray, the most basic way would be a jump in and IMMEDIATELY jump out again. Of course there are no guarantees and effectiveness in baiting will depend on your opponents play style and the circumstances of the fight. Any character with teleport abilities can easily evade xrays but your reflexes need to be quick! This is not nearly as important in sp as it will be online when facing real people, that's when the mind games kick in lol.

Anyone who has the game is free to add me on PSN, we can get some good games going, I will be playing this for some time to come

Well, seeing that everybody has already posted some lengthy reviews, I think I'm just going to ask the obvious here:

Who's your favorite character?

For me, it's definitely Kratos. Being a fan of both the MK and GoW franchises, I would have normally picked Scorpion. But my fanism towards Kratos went through the roof with him in the game!

To continue where I left off:

Visually the game is a stunner. Silky smooth 60 FPS combined with beautiful animations is always a good thing. Character models look great (some do look silly but this IS MK lol) and the damage modelling in particular is superb. Things really start to shine with the cinematic fatalities and xrays. Everything is so satisfyingly bloody, brutal and visceral that no other game, fighting or otherwise, even comes close. Now I have played my fair share of violent video games and seen enough violent movies and TV shows (most recently/notably Spartacus as far as the gore is concerned) but there are certain fatalities in the game that even made me slightly wince. The developers did not hold back, this is a true assault on the senses. The stages themselves are simply glorious. There is so much detail, so much to admire going on in the background that you will probably want to mess around in training mode where there is no risk of losing just to take it all in. I have counted over 20 stages, Marvel vs Capcom 3 has...7. There are a ton of cool visual flourishes like everyone having their own entrance/exit animation in tag battles, I love this attention to detail.

The visuals are complimented by some of the best sound design I have ever heard, everything has such impact. The design is also very distinct, whether it is the sound of ice crystalizing with Sub-Zero freezing his opponent, the dead hush before the impact of Jax's shockwave or the unmistakable sounds of bladed weapons, everything sounds exactly as it should and helps elevate what is already a great game into masterpiece territory. The voice acting is good too, lots of funny scenes in story mode, especially where Johny Cage is involved

I have not played too much online yet so I can't really give an honest opinion other then to applaud the developers for King of the Hill mode which really does replicate the feeling of being in an arcade and gives players the opportunity to talk trash or strategy as they wait for their turn. The idea of rating the fight is really cool and having your own little avatars who also have hidden gestures to discover is the icing on a very bloody cake. The few matches I had ran well but not perfect. Once I have spent a good few hours online I will comment on overall latency.

I could go on forever but instead I will say this in closing: BUY. THE. GAME.

For me, it's definitely Kratos. Being a fan of both the MK and GoW franchises, I would have normally picked Scorpion. But my fanism towards Kratos went through the roof with him in the game!

I am a massive GoW fan and have not even tried Kratos yet, good possibility he will become a favorite. I read a few blogs on Kratos strategy, he is a very versatile character with a ton of options at his disposal. I am loving Smoke, Johnny Cage and of course Scorpion the most right now but I still have to try out half the characters!

I got it not too long ago, but I have it on Xbox so don't ask me about playing online since i'm assuming many of you own it on PS3. My favorite character by far is Noob Saibot.
I have tried playing online but the lag is terrible but the good thing is that it is suppose to be fixed in a patch soon.

The Klassic costumes that came in pre orders and the ultimate edition and such are going to be available on june 7th to buy for 5$ or 400 microsoft points.
Scorpion,Sub Zero, Ermac, Jade, Milenna, Kitana, and Reptile.
Those are the characters it includes. A pretty good deal considering people were buying ermac and sub Zero on ebay for LARGE sums of money O.o
