Metroid Project: Morphball Demonstration

Archive: 16 posts

I erased my old tutorial and made a highly improved one in its place. I will let you know in advance, this is a very difficult level to beat for most. I've aced it myself, as well as made it through the race in time. So it is possible. Anyways, let me know what you all think!

Thanks guys, hope you all enjoy! I put a ton of time into the morphball physics and making it interact with the level right :-). Once the whole metroid project is complete, I will be giving the morphball away as a prize for 100% abilities and powerups collected in the entire game of level links.

As far as feedback I give, I like to give it directly on the game, and would prefer if you guys did so as well. But you can leave feedback here too. I just don't come here that often haha. If you want me to leave feedback on the site as well, just let me know!

Looks interesting, I'll be sure to check it out when I can!

I've been toying around with "Metroidvania" style design as well but with my extremely limited knowledge of how to create in LBP2, I just couldn't figure out how to do a morphball. Can't wait for you to finish the project, I love Metroid sooo much, so I'm super excited!

Yeah, I hope you like it! If you have skills other than logic...like visual design, sound, or level layout, you are more than welcome to show me your skills and possibly join my team if you're interested.

+ This has improved a lot. I like the camera angles. The art is a little plain but it works for a tutorial.

- Still very frustrating. The ball moves to slow in the water. I almost quit your level there. lqtms
- The bomb jump is stupid. I know it is from the original but I can not support it. It is frusrating to use.
- The boost spider ball section needs to be worked on. It is either too long or the plasma is too close together. It took me awhile to get one spider boost jump down. Not sure how you improve your description.

FYI I have not played any of the metroids. So I am coming at this fresh.

hi you!
i got some constructive critique if you like some otherwise just ignore it ^^:

the first part with the water was frustrating... it takes way to long to bring the ball back... maybe tweek the ball so it can get faster underwater?
this is not a bomb it makes no sound hun.
some parts are way to hart. let me say... the double jump parts.
and also way to hard is the green part with the purple fields... i was not even able to get up to 4 of them
sure you can, but you build the level and played it thousand times hun
why do i need to press the 0 button till i glow? cant you do the speed just per button? without waiting? just limit the time
you are also able to miss the controllinator when you respawn... you should fix that.
why does it need to climb up walls when i click R1? is it not enogh if it glues on it? i want to move when i move the stick nothing more - makes the described part above way to difficult (wait it don't climbs... it takes the movement and don't stops it, that should not be i guess right?)

sorry i tryed it till i guess 20 times respawned... cant get up there... need more practice :?
other than that... great level! and a cool idea!
the design is also well done! had fun playing it but... well like i said above *Hugs* sorry!

for the F4F plz go to the skunk bunny adventure link in my signature! thank you

Thank you, the camera angles for the most part were to improve playability for when multiple people tried playing at once. Though it is definitely best played as 1 player like you said in your review.

Well, there is a thing about the water that makes it necessary to be slower. Though I might improve the speed a little bit. While you have a normal suit and normal morphball, water weighs you down considerably. It makes movement slow and jumping is completely disabled. Movement and jumping won't be back to normal until the Gravity suit is obtained. So, it kind of follows the gameplay which is why I am weary about changing it.

The bomb jump, while frustrating, is needed. It is in all the games and is a necessary strategy in the game. I'm sorry that you don't like it. As far as boost ball spider jump, I have been considering taking first two bottom plasmas out to allow practice before danger is a factor. Once someone gets the hang of how it works, it becomes quite easy for them. I have tested it with many players that I have played the level with. Most of them eventually figure out what to do, and then become quite good at it.

FYI I have not played any of the metroids. So I am coming at this fresh.

I definitely do appreciate the feedback whether you have played Metroid games or not. I recommend you play the prime games, very very entertaining and a lot of fun.

As I also said above, the water is a key factor. It used to act normally in water, however I tweaked it to make it slower. In the metroid games, you don't acquire normal movement or jumping ability underwater without the gravity suit. This level is basically to show how similar I have the morphball made to the actual videogames themselves. I may make movement in water slightly faster, but it won't be the same as out of the water. Otherwise it wouldn't fit the game.

Yes, sound effects are generally my weakness in that level. I don't have many, though I plan to add more when I finish up the health logic I am working on with my friends. I'll post here once I make an update to the level with any changes.

some parts are way to hart. let me say... the double jump parts.

If by double jump parts, you are referring to bomb jumping, then yes, it can be a bit difficult to understand the concept, especially if you haven't played the Metroid games. The easiest way to use bombs is to lay a bomb, jump, lay another at the peak of the jump, fall and let the bombs boost you naturally. When the second one boosts you, use the directional joystick to guide your direction in the air. Another way you can do it, is lay bombs as rapidly as you can without moving the ball. Within ten seconds you should get a boost of from three bombs in a row. I've actually gotten up to five jumps once, just have to time it really well. Again, this is another important factor and skill in the actual metroid games, I can't take it out for that reason. For the most part just takes practice and experimentation.

and also way to hard is the green part with the purple fields... i was not even able to get up to 4 of them
sure you can, but you build the level and played it thousand times hun

I understand that can be quite a difficult part of the level, probably the most difficult, but it is an essential skill that will need to be learned in order to play my Metroid levels once they are completed. The boost ball spider ball will allow major strategy and skill while in morphball mode. It can't be taken out, but for the sake of making tutorial a little bit easier, I may take out the bottom two plasmas to allow practice without danger before actually ascending.

why do i need to press the 0 button till i glow? cant you do the speed just per button? without waiting? just limit the time

Think of the boost ball as a charge up energy boost. In the actual games you have to charge it up as well. It makes the boost ball puzzles much too easy if there isn't a charge time to allow boost ball to activate. You glow, because the ball is charging energy, once glowing, you have full energy and can release it for a short, quick burst of speed. That is just how the boost ball works lol.

you are also able to miss the controllinator when you respawn... you should fix that.

Yeah, I noticed that when I played it. I'll end up fixing it sometime in the next week once my health logic is complete.

You are correct, it takes the movement that you previously had. To tell you the truth, while disabling all movement unless pressing joystick will make it easier for people who don't understand the concept well, having the extra momentum actually makes it easier for the players who do understand the concept. So, I'm not sure how to please everyone with this...what I will prbably do is just take away first two plasmas to allow practice with the concept before the player actaully faces plasma danger.

Just played it, I too didn't like the water bit and to start i thought it was a bit slow. But one all the abilities have been acquired its freaking cool! i enjoyed the spiderball and boosting bit very cool. i think it would be great if you made a level dedicated to the difficult parts and made it a race! keep it up!2011-03-06 15:03:00

I just tried this and it was certainly a good start, but the mechanics didn't quite feel like Metroid to me (big Metroid Prime fan here, if you hadn't guessed already). I think overall it felt sluggish, and not just the water area. Maybe you might want to consider tweaking gravity or friction in the caves, but the ball doesn't seem to have the acceleration or nice bounce that the real game has. There's a jump and bomb-laying lag that makes bomb jumping a lot harder than they are in the real game as well.

Anyway, it's a good start...looking forward to see where this goes

I've thought about a few ideas for sub levels that would just excercise different aspects of the ball's abilities. I've actually thought about making separate tutorials that let you practice each individual ability a ton before learning how to use next one all linked together by level links. The last level link would hold a key to unlock the level that I am currently showcasing. If I do that, then I can remove all magic mouths and actually make a level out of it instead of tutorial with interrupting mouths. This will allow more logic application instead of a brainless walkthrough. People wouldn't have as much trouble figuring stuff out on the actual level if they have the practice with each ability beforehand from the tutorials. So I will most likely end up doing that eventually.

Keep in mind, the morphball is just a small part of a much larger project. Glad you enjoyed it, will soon have an actual working samus aran bot. Then it will get really fun. Mainly because the morphball itself is a power up within itself. Once samus bot is completed, then a tutorial for her use will be put up as well.

Yeah, for some reason I can't seem to get the exact physics down for environmental travel. I can get it close, but not perfect. Same with bomb laying, if you want you can try and help make it more similar to the game. But I'm not too sure how to get it it to improve. Whenever I make it roll faster it will climb vertical walls at certain velocities. So I have to try and find a perfect middle. I would definitely appreciate the input of someone else who knows metroid and its mechanics. So you are more than welcome to join my team if you like. :-)
